The Royal Society, UK's autonomous scientific academy, has announced the launch of EXiS Open Choice, an open access' journal service. The service will initially be available on a trial basis to see if it provides a viable way of sustaining peer review costs and other aspects of journal production.
EXiS Open Choice will allow individuals to read new scientific papers free of charge immediately after they are published on the web. The service requires authors to pay a fee to have their paper made freely available on the web immediately. Authors will be charged £300 per A4 page. However, the Society will initially be offering a discounted rate of £225 per A4 page to encourage authors to use the service. Currently, all papers appearing in Royal Society journals can be accessed for free 12 months after the publication date.
The first paper published under the new service entitled 'Resolving multisensory conflict: a strategy for balancing the costs and benefits of audio-visual integration', is currently available on the Society's website. In addition to being made freely available on the Society's website, the paper is being deposited with the PubMedCentral service.
