Library solutions provider
Ex Libris Group, UK, has announced a partnership with Vanderbilt University and the University of Minnesota to launch its new library cataloguing system, Primo. The product will be unveiled at the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Primo presents library users with a unified solution for the discovery and delivery of local and remote scholarly information resources, including books, journals, articles, images and other digital content. It is projected to help libraries provide their patrons with an enhanced level of services, including quick and efficient discovery and delivery of what they need, and where and when they need it.
Primo was developed in collaboration with hbz, the University Library Center of North-Rhine Westphalia. The product draws on the latest in search technologies and web 2.0 models such as social computing and content mashup. It is claimed to go beyond existing search engine tools, enabling libraries to provide enhanced access to physical and electronic information resources. It is also seen to maximise system flexibility and minimise the total cost of ownership by providing institutions with a solution that leverages existing library applications.
