Professional Engineering Publishing (PE Publishing), the publishing arm of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), has launched a new service called InPress. Researchers can now access new papers from PE Publishing journals much earlier than ever before. Papers accepted for publication are now being made available online as uncorrected proofs. Each paper has a DOI and is fully searchable and citable. Papers are assigned to an issue upon publication in print.

Internet search services provider Google has reportedly announced the release of a mobile-friendly version of its Book Search service. Using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, Google has scanned page images from about 1.5 million public domain books and converted them to screen-friendly text. There are, however, some potential errors in this process, such as smudges and other imperfections in the text, which Google has reportedly admitted to.

There has been a significant rise in nanotechnology publications and patents in India since the launch of a national initiative eight years ago, it has been reported. While industry produced few publications and patents during 1990–2007, universities and government-funded institutes have taken the lead in the sector, an analysis has revealed. The results are part of a wider study by India's National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies (NISTADS).

The Shibboleth System (a trademark of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development) is a standards-based, open source software package for web single sign-on allowing library sites to make informed authorisation decisions for individual access of protected online resources.

Veterinary Learning Systems, a division of MediMedia USA, has announced that effective with the February issue, the continuing education (CE) credits offered in the monthly journal Veterinary Technician will be increased to 1 credit hour for each CE article. CE credits are awarded by Alfred State College, a State University of New York (SUNY) College of Technology. After careful review, the college agreed to increase the amount of CE awarded for each article.

STM publisher Springer has announced that its journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (ABC) has chosen chemist Wei Sun as the recipient of its Best Paper Award 2008. Sun is the lead author of a paper in ABC on developing advanced tools for in vivo biological imaging. The award, including the 1,000 euro prize, was created by Springer to help exceptional young scientists establish their research careers.

Evolution: Education and Outreach, a journal for evolution education published by STM publisher Springer is celebrating its first anniversary and the Darwin anniversary year with special issues throughout 2009. The first special issue, focusing on Darwin’s work in evolution, coincides with his 200th birthday on February 12, 2009. This will be followed by special issues in June on transitional fossils, in September on curriculum issues and in December on human evolution.

The Association of American Publishers has welcomed the re-introduction of legislation to safeguard the rights of authors and publishers of copyrighted, peer-reviewed scientific journal articles. The Fair Copyright in Research Works Act, HR 801, was re-introduced in response to a government mandate that allows the National Institutes of Health to make the content of publishers’ value-added, peer-reviewed journal articles freely available online within 12 months of publication.

Non-profit scientific publisher Institute of Physics Publishing (IOP) has announced the appointments of Judith Barnsby, Marie Moment and Jane Roscoe to key roles in the company. Having worked at IOP Publishing for six years, Barnsby will now serve as head of e-development. Marie Moment has been named business development manager following the retirement of Desmond Reaney at the end of 2008. Jane Roscoe will head the publishing development team.
