 Taylor & Francis to publish NALMS’ Lake and Reservoir Management journal

  Academic publisher Taylor & Francis has announced that it will publish the journal Lake and Reservoir Management (LRM), beginning in 2009. The journal is the official journal of the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS).

  

 Springer signs publishing deal with Society for Mycotoxin Research

  STM publisher Springer has signed an agreement with the Society for Mycotoxin Research to publish the Society’s official journal Mycotoxin Research. Dr. Ewald Usleber of the Institute of Veterinary Food Science at the University of Giessen, Germany, will serve as the editor-in-chief of the journal. He will be supported by an international editorial board.

  

 Wiley-Blackwell and APS announce publishing partnership

  Wiley-Blackwell, the STM and scholarly publishing business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., has announced a partnership with the American Physiological Society (APS). Under the deal, Wiley-Blackwell will publish the latter’s Physiology Online, an evolving compendium of current knowledge of all aspects of physiology. The publication will be launched online in January 2010.

  

 Reed Business Information-US opts for Nstein’s digital supply chain platform

  Nstein Technologies, Inc., a Canada-based provider of online publishing solutions for newspapers, magazines and online content providers, has announced that B2B publisher Reed Business Information (RBI) - US has chosen Nstein’s WCM (Web Content Management), TME (Text Mining Engine) and DAM (Digital Asset Management) to upgrade its digital content supply chain for its more than 80 print publications, and its associated 80 websites and portals.

  

 Swets Gateway to market IOS Press journals in the Asia Pacific region

  STM publisher IOS Press and Swets Gateway, the special publisher services division of Swets, recently reached an agreement to market and disseminate IOS Press journals in the Asia Pacific region. Swets Gateway will, on behalf of IOS Press, serve as its exclusive sales and marketing representative in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Pakistan, Brunei and New Zealand.

  

 IMV Publishing acquires online continuing education provider ProBusiness Online

  IMV Publishing, a division of IMV Ltd., has announced the acquisition of ProBusiness Online, a provider of online continuing education (CE) for dental professionals. Under the deal, Roger J. Adams, president of ProBusiness Online, will continue to manage ProBusiness Online and will also lead the continuing education efforts of IMV Publishing's dental portal, DrBicuspid.com.

  

 Healthcare information technology company opts for Brainware enterprise search and data capture solutions

  Data capture and enterprise search solutions provider Brainware, Inc. has announced that a leading healthcare information technology company has adopted its product package as an enterprise document processing platform. In a deal worth more than $600,000, this new client will deploy Brainware Distiller to automate contracts indexing, and Globalbrain enterprise search to facilitate contracts E-Discovery.

 Patent approval rates down at key regions, says Thomson Reuters report

  The Healthcare and Science business of Thomson Reuters has released its 2009 Patent Focus Report. Authored by Joff Wild, editor of Intellectual Asset Management magazine, and published in the Thomson Reuters KnowledgeLink eNewsletter, the report explores recent activities at each of the world's major patenting authorities (the US, Europe, Japan, China and India).

  

 Taylor & Francis launches new publication in forensic studies

  Academic publisher Taylor & Francis has announced the release of a new journal in the field of forensic studies - Forensic Science Policy and Management: An International Journal. Each issue of Volume 1 of the journal will be freely available online for 60 days after publication.

  

 Reprints Desk announces enhancements to its STM Document Delivery service

  Reprints Desk, a US-based content re-purposing company focused on medical and scientific publishing, has announced enhancements to its STM Document Delivery service. Notable enhancements include the addition of web services technology capabilities that allow users to order directly from their intranets or corporate websites, and client access to the Reprints Desk delivery engine for filling document delivery orders from existing in-house library collections.

  

 Thieme Chemistry website relaunched with additional features

  STM publisher Thieme Publishing Group has relaunched thieme-chemistry.com. For 100 years, Thieme Chemistry has been publishing peer-reviewed research on synthetic and general chemistry for professionals and advanced students. The completely restructured, user friendly website provides customers with an overview of all products and services within the division and facilitates direct access to all its e-Products.

  

 BMJ launches Evidence Centre, a decision support tool for health practitioners

  BMJ Evidence Centre has announced the launch of Best Practice, an online decision support tool designed to help practitioners, patients, students and researchers find the best medical information and use it in the most effective way. It brings together the latest evidence, peer-reviewed expert opinion, and guidelines on over 10,000 different diagnoses. Its easy-to-use design is seen to fit information around existing workflows - enabling clinicians, nurses and pharmacists to make the best decisions for their patients, every time.

  

 International Desalination Association set to launch new journal

  The International Desalination Association (IDA) has announced plans to launch a new publication - IDA Journal on Desalination and Water Reuse. The inaugural issue of the journal will debut at the 2009 World Congress, which takes place November 7-12 in Dubai.

  

 Principles and Practice of Podiatric Medicine, 2nd Edition – sample chapter now available online

  Publishing, marketing, and information services company Data Trace Publishing Company has announced that a sample chapter, including more than 50 full colour slides and photographs, from the podiatry textbook Principles and Practice of Podiatric Medicine, 2nd Edition, is now available for viewing online. The chapter ‘Tumors of the Soft Tissue’ focuses on neoplasms and non-neoplastic conditions as they occur in the lower extremity.

  

 Landman Library Catalog goes live with interface from LibLime

  LibLime, a provider of open source library software, and Arcadia University have announced that the Landman Library Catalog has gone live. Landman Library is a collection of online resources, databases (proprietary and open content) and the library catalogue, accessible to all Arcadia University faculty and students. The catalogue was developed in-house by Arcadia University using Pazpar2, an open-source middleware technology created by LibLime's partner, Index Data.

  Scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG) has announced that its science recruitment service, Naturejobs, has unveiled a fresh design and improved functionality and navigation for its website, naturejobs.com. The new website is the latest development for Naturejobs, which is claimed to have grown to become the world's largest dedicated scientific jobs database through pioneering free online advertisements.

  

 The UKSG publishes new chapters of The E-Resources Management Handbook

  The UK Serials Group (UKSG) recently published new chapters of The E-Resources Management Handbook, its open access guide to the issues and challenges facing those in the information community. Two of the new chapters follow the book's original formula by providing analyses of specific areas of e-resource management.

  

 AIP and APS release redesigned website for Virtual Journals Series

  The American Institute of Physics and American Physical Society, co-publishers of the Virtual Journals in Science and Technology (VJ) series, have announced the release of a completely redesigned website for the Virtual Journals. The series currently includes five publications, covering the areas of applications of superconductivity, biological physics research, nanoscale science & technology, quantum information, and ultrafast science.

 Medical journals biased toward pharma-sponsored influenza vaccine studies: BMJ report

  A review of influenza vaccine studies has been published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), authored by Dr. Tom Jefferson of Cochrane Field, Italy, and colleagues. The review found that published influenza vaccine studies sponsored by industry are treated more favourably by medical journals even when the studies are of poor quality.

 Leading associations call for universities need to promote broader dissemination of research and scholarship

  Four leading associations serving research universities - the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Association of American Universities (AAU), the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) - have issued a joint statement, ‘The University’s Role in the Dissemination of Research and Scholarship.’ The statement is a call to action for universities to ensure the broadest possible access to the products of their work.

 American Chemical Society publications bags PROSE awards

  The American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society, has announced that it has won two prestigious PROSE awards for excellence in scholarly publishing. ACS Nano, edited by Dr. Paul S. Weiss, received the Association of American Publishers’ Award for Best New Journal in the category of Science, Technology, and Medicine. ACS was also recognised as the winner of eProduct/Best Website or Platform.

  

 Springer journals honored by Association of American Publishers

  STM publisher Springer has announced that its Springer Handbook of Robotics has been awarded the Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Award for Excellence in Physical Sciences & Mathematics. The Handbook was also the winner in the subcategory Engineering & Technology. The awards were announced during the Annual Conference of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers in Washington, DC.

  

 Ex Libris announces expansion of Primo community with new members

  Library solutions provider Ex Libris Group has announced the ongoing expansion of the international Primo discovery and delivery community. Primo is claimed to be a one-stop solution for the discovery and delivery of local and remote resources, such as books, journal articles and digital objects. It assists libraries in fully utilising their collections and offering users an up-to-date discovery and delivery experience.

  

 Elsevier titles win 4 PROSE Awards

  STM publisher Elsevier has announced that it has won four PROSE awards for excellence in scholarly publishing. The PROSE awards, which were presented earlier this month, were judged by a panel of 15 judges representing PSP member companies as well as librarians and academics from major educational institutions. This year’s competition received some 439 entries. The competition also featured the launch of an award website.

  

 IOPscience recognised in 'best website' category

  Non-profit scientific publisher Institute of Physics Publishing (IOP) has announced that IOPscience, its online platform for journal content, was awarded an honorable mention in the 'Best Website or Platform' category at the PROSE Awards in February 2009. The PROSE Awards recognise the very best in professional and scholarly publishing by bringing attention to distinguished books, journals, and electronic content in over 35 disciplines.

 Authors, publishers notified about class action settlement on Google Book Search

  The court-ordered process of officially notifying authors, publishers and other copyright-holders about the Google Book Search class-action settlement is in progress, it has been reported. Authors and publishers worldwide are receiving detailed information about their legal rights and options by e-mail and postal mail. A summary notice is being published in 218 countries and 72 languages, which complements the mailed notice programme.

  

 ALPSP responds to UK Intellectual Property Office paper on IP issues in digital era

  The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishing (ALPSP), the international trade association for scholarly and professional publishers, has responded to the UK Intellectual Property Office issues paper, '© the Future'. In its response, the ALPSP has acknowledged that intellectual property (IP) regimes must balance the needs of users with those of rights holders to fairly exploit their IP. But it has noted that a strong IP regime, backed by appropriate enforcement and education, is needed to provide a framework that stimulates innovation and rewards creativity.

 BioMed Central journals indexed in Cinahl

  Open access publisher BioMed Central has announced that 8 of its journals have recently been accepted for indexing by Cinahl. Cinahl indexes titles relevant to nursing and allied healthcare. All of these titles are also included in PubMed, PubMed Central, Index Copernicus and Scopus.

  

 Twenty-one BioMed Central journals get five-year impact factor ratings

  Open access publisher BioMed Central has announced that out of its 42 journals with impact factors, 21 have been tracked for long enough to allow five-year impact factors to be calculated by Thomson Reuters. Recently, Thomson Reuters updated the 2007 Journal Citation Report to include five-year impact factors for the first time.

 ULC expands search for new president and CEO

  The Urban Libraries Council (ULC), a membership organisation of North America’s premier public library systems and the corporations that serve them, is continuing its search for a new president and chief executive officer. The ULC launched its search in late 2008 and will continue it throughout the first quarter of 2009, expanding to a broader audience of potential candidates.

  

 Inderscience names new Editor-in-Chief for IJ Energy Technology and Policy

  STM and business publisher Inderscience has announced the appointment of Dr. Nasr Alkadi, Corporate Energy Manager at General Motors Corporation, as the new Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Energy Technology and Policy.  CIG Media Group names Georgia Nikolaros as Senior Manager, Advertising Sales, for clinical oncology journals
