Library solutions provider Ex Libris Group has announced that the Stanley Ho Library of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) has acquired a suite of Ex Libris products. These include the Aleph integrated library system (ILS), the MetaLib gateway and metasearch portal, the SFX OpenURL link resolver, and the Primo discovery and delivery solution. Following an intensive evaluation process, OUHK chose the Ex Libris solutions to improve the user experience and maximise the efficiency of Library staff.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and IBM have announced a publishing agreement. Under the deal, all papers published in IBM journals will be available exclusively in the IEEE Xplore digital library from the first quarter of 2010 onwards. The aim is to disseminate key technical articles and papers in computer hardware, software and information systems to a wider audience of researchers and interested readers around the world. The IBM Journal of Research and Development, which now includes the IBM Systems Journal, is claimed to be one of the top-cited journals in the field.

Medical information provider Wolters Kluwer Health (WK Health) has announced that Summa Health System has selected ProVation MD software for Cardiology procedure documentation and coding. Summa Health will use the software to document and code catheterization cases at its three cardiac catheterization labs at Summa Akron City Hospital. ProVation MD software for procedure documentation and coding compliance replaces dictation/transcription and streamlines the coding and billing process.

Clinical informatics company Humedica and Anceta, the health care informatics subsidiary of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA), have announced a long-term partnership. Anceta has selected Humedica to be its exclusive partner in the development of its nationwide collaborative data warehouse and robust clinical analytics platform. Humedica and Anceta will showcase some early results from this membership-driven initiative at the ongoing AMGA’s Institute for Quality Leadership (IQL) Annual Conference in San Francisco.

The Entomological Society of America (ESA) has announced that it will begin publishing the Journal of Integrated Pest Management (JIPM) in spring 2010. JIPM is an open-access, peer-reviewed, extension journal covering the field of integrated pest management. Dr. Marlin E. Rice of Pioneer Hi-Bred International (formerly with Iowa State University) and Dr. Kevin L. Steffey of Dow Agrosciences (formerly with the University of Illinois) will serve as the Editors-in-Chief.

Wiley-Blackwell, the STM and scholarly publishing business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc, has announced that it will be publishing the Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies (APJFS), beginning February 2010. Academic publisher SAGE has announced the launch of a new journal - Genes & Cancer. The journal will be published monthly beginning in January 2010. Dr. Prem Reddy, founder and previous Editor-in-Chief of the highly-ranked journal Oncogene, will serve as the editor. Genes & Cancer will cover all aspects of the structure and function of oncogenes, growth suppressor and apoptotic genes, their role in signal transduction process and the mechanisms by which their expression and function are altered during tumor development.

Scientific publisher RSC Publishing, the publishing arm of the Royal Society of Chemistry, has announced the inaugural issue of Analytical Methods, the journal for new and improved methods for the practical application of analytical science. Information services provider Thomson Reuters has released a study, according to which India's research productivity will be on par with most G8 nations within 7-8 years and could overtake them between 2015 and 2020. The study, ‘Global Research Report: India’, is part of a new series of Global Research Reports from Thomson Reuters that will illustrate the changing landscape and dynamics of the global research base around the world. It informs policymakers about the research and collaboration potential of the nation and its current place in world science.

The UK’s Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) and Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association (UCISA) have commissioned a report on academic library and IT services. The report shows how academic library and IT services are budgeting for today’s economic conditions, but are in need of help to scenario plan for the long term impact of the recession. The report ‘The impact of the economic recession on university library and IT services’ contains the findings of 40 interviews carried out in 36 universities across the UK.

The Johns Hopkins University Sheridan Libraries have been awarded $20 million from the US’ National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant is to fund the building of a data research infrastructure for the management of the ever-increasing amounts of digital information created for teaching and research. The five-year award was one of two for what is being called ‘data curation.’ The project, known as the Data Conservancy, involves individuals from several institutions, with Johns Hopkins University serving as the lead.

Scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG) has announced that Nature Medicine will celebrate 15 years as the leading translational research journal, in 2010. To mark this anniversary, the journal will expand its content by 25 percent and increase its editorial team. Starting January 2010, Nature Medicine will publish more news, reviews, and research articles. Readers and library customers will be able to access more content with no commensurate price increases.

The Chief Academic and Research Officers of 18 research universities in the US have declared their support for the Federal Research Public Access Act in a letter recently issued by the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA). The officers represent public and private institutions across 10 states. The Federal Research Public Access Act (FRPAA), introduced in June, is projected as a bipartisan measure to ensure online public access to the published results of research funded through 11 US agencies. The bill would require that journal articles stemming from publicly funded research be made available in an online repository no later than six months after publication.

In her new position, Rose will lead efforts to cultivate and deepen relationships with university presses and scholarly associations, building their participation in the new Current Scholarship Program announced last month by JSTOR and University of California Press. She will also manage the Program’s operations and lead its business strategy going forward.
