Six universities in the UK have announced plans to work as part of a major initiative to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) throughout England and Wales. The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) has announced that it is offering open access to two peer-reviewed articles about Charles Darwin and his historic insights into evolution to celebrate the 150th anniversary this month of the publication of the On the Origin of Species. In a similar move, STM publisher Springer has also announced a special issue of the journal Naturwissenschaften. All articles in this special issue will be available for free until December 30, 2009.
