EBSCO has released a tool, EBSCO SmartLinks+, designed to help librarians expose more content and make searches more relevant within their library’s collection.
SmartLinks+ utilises a knowledge base of more than 23 million article links from more than 15,000 journals, dynamically inserting the appropriate links to full text directly into EBSCOhost search results. EBSCO has developed an advanced rights-and-identity engine that triangulates the availability, ownership, and location of full text — providing the pre-validated links that appear for articles in the e-packages and e-journals to which a library subscribes through EBSCO. With this vast amount of continuously updated article-level metadata, librarians ensure that their users have seamless access to their library’s online subscriptions.
When a library subscribes to e-journals via EBSCO and one or more databases on the EBSCOhost Research Databases platform, SmartLinks+ can be automatically enabled. This makes librarians’ jobs easier and ensures that users can access all of the library’s full-text content. The unequaled linking provided through SmartLinks+, combined with the broad subject discipline coverage available in more than 350 EBSCOhost databases, creates an even more powerful tool for researchers. And when users are able to find full text easily within the library’s e-packages and e-journals, they are more likely to make library resources their first choice for research — significantly increasing the usage of the library’s content.
STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced the launch of a new journal - Economics of Transportation.
As the official journal of the International Transportation Economics Association (ITEA), Economics of Transportation welcomes both theoretical and applied papers that make important contributions to transportation economics. The journal will publish papers that research the interaction between transportation and other economic activities; papers that seek to promote cross fertilisation with other fields of economics including labour, trade, urban economics, and industrial organisation; and substantive papers on timely policy issues relating to transportation.

Serials Solutions, a ProQuest business unit, has announced that Paul Brennan has joined the company as Senior Director, Content Operations.
In this new role, Brennan will develop the vision and drive content operational excellence for Serials Solutions and Bowker, an affiliated business of ProQuest. These businesses together comprise ProQuest Workflow Solutions which develops discovery solutions, data aggregation, library management and analysis services.
Previously, Brennan introduced advanced industry practices to improve content integrity, operational efficiency and requirements adherence at Gracenote, a global leader in embedded technology, enriched content and data services for digital entertainment solutions. His progressive career path also includes a decade of experience at Muze Inc. as senior vice president, media information services, which included P&L responsibility, strategic planning and execution, business process improvement and global content development.
The PEER Project held its final event to present the results on May 29 in Brussels. More than 100 attendees from the research, university and STM publishing communities, as well as policy makers, attended the conference. Comments by Vice President Neelie Kroes (Digital Agenda) from the European Commission opened the meeting followed by an agenda reflecting the collaborative nature of the PEER project with results and perspectives from various stakeholders presented throughout the day.
The PEER (Publishing and the Ecology of European Research) project is supported by the EC eContentplus programme. It aimed to investigate the effects of the large-scale, systematic depositing of authors’ final peer-reviewed manuscripts (so called Green Open Access or stage-two research output) on reader access, author visibility and journal viability, as well as on the broader ecology of European research.
The project was a collaboration between publishers, repositories and researchers and ran from September 2008 to May 2012.
The Frankfurt Book Fair’s all-media platform, Frankfurt StoryDrive recently made its debut appearance in Beijing. RSC Open Science will only be available to authors once their papers have been accepted for publication, following the normal peer-review procedures.
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has announced that Dr. Toni Sauncy will join AIP's Education Division on August 1, 2012, as interim director of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honour society. Sauncy will replace Dr. Gary White during his temporary appointment as a programme officer with the National Science Foundation's Education and Human Resources Division.
Sauncy will oversee the daily operation of SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma, including the production of AIP's Education publications - the Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics, The SPS Observer, and Radiations. Sauncy will also support outreach and service activities for society chapters, physics departments, AIP Member Societies, and the public. As a member of the Education Division, she will also assist in strategic planning, work closely with key volunteers and Member Societies in developing new education activities, and support AIP's presence in the science/physics education arena.
Sauncy has served as the president of SPS since 2009 and is currently a tenured professor in the Department of Physics at Angelo State University, where she has taught since 2000. Sauncy has a history of proven leadership as demonstrated by her service on numerous collegiate and professional association committees, including those of APS and AAPT.
Non-profit electronic archiving service provider Portico, US, has announced that the American Medical Association (AMA) will preserve its e-journals with Portico.
AMA has committed 13 titles for preservation in Portico. These include the AMA’s flagship journal, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA); the 9 prestigious Archives journals; American Medical News; Disaster Medicine; and Public Health Preparedness, and Virtual Mentor.
Published continuously since 1883, JAMA claims to be one of the most widely circulated peer-reviewed general medical journals in the world.
