German Springer to publish two long-established ceramics journals - Interceram and Keramische Zeitschrift - 13 Feb 2018

Springer has announced that beginning March 2018 it will publish two long-established ceramics journals - Interceram and Keramische Zeitschrift. German-language Keramische Zeitschrift and English-language Interceram will supplement the Mechanical Engineering + Materials channel on the portal Springer Professional. The journals will further strengthen Springer Fachmedien's portfolio.

The international journals represent an excellent addition, both to the materials journals already published in Wiesbaden, and to the online content offered on the Springer Professional portal's 'Mechanical Engineering + Materials' channel.

Both Interceram, which will turn 67 in 2018, and Keramische Zeitschrift, which will turn 70, highlight key technologies and manufacturing techniques for industrial ceramics. Presenting not only innovative processes and products, but also the latest research advances, the two journals will be published five times a year. In addition, an English-language special on 'refractories' will be released in September.

The first issues of Keramische Zeitschrift and Interceram published in Wiesbaden will focus on technical ceramics, functional ceramics, ceramic process engineering and additive manufacturing. For the remainder of 2018, further issues on e.g. ceramic materials for energy storage, high-temperature applications, lightweight design, surface engineering and joining technologies are planned.

Keramische Zeitschrift and Interceram can be subscribed to in either print or digital format. Their content will be integrated into the Springer Professional portal, a platform where Springer Fachmedien is also creating a back-issues archive for subscribers. Until the end of 2017, both journals were published by Expert Fachmedien GmbH in Düsseldorf.

US Wiley, the Austrian Academic Library Consortium and the Austrian Science Fund announce combined open access and subscription agreement - 13 Feb 2018

John Wiley and Sons Inc., the Austrian Academic Library Consortium (KEMÖ) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) has announced a three-year combined open access publication and subscription agreement. This transformative agreement will provide researchers and students at 22 institutions affiliated with KEMÖ access to all subscription journals published by Wiley. Corresponding authors from KEMÖ-affiliated institutions will also be able to publish unlimited open access articles in Wiley's hybrid journals at no charge to the author.

Over the lifetime of the agreement, KEMÖ, the FWF and Wiley will monitor and assess the arrangement to ensure that it continues to meet the needs and strategic goals of the Austrian Higher Education Sector and the FWF.

To ensure that all eligible researchers and students benefit from the new agreement with KEMÖ and the FWF, Wiley continues to invest in new technology, including new enhancements to the Author Services platform. Upon article acceptance, eligible authors at KEMÖ-affiliated institutions will automatically be identified and notified of the opportunity to publish open access at no cost. There are also clear reminders and further eligibility checks throughout Author Services to help guide authors in taking advantage of the agreement. These functionalities create a seamless experience for affiliated authors, allowing them to easily publish open access through OnlineOpen, Wiley's hybrid open access option.

US ProQuest launches long-term preservation initiative ‘Dark Archive’ with book content - 13 Feb 2018

ProQuest has launched a new initiative for the long-term archival storage of its digital content, creating a 'dark archive' that protects the investments of its library customers. The ProQuest® SAFE™ (Secure Archives ForEver) service will ensure preservation and access to content purchased by customers.

The SAFE service will launch using Amazon Glacier, the long-term backup and data-archiving resource from Amazon Web Services, chosen for its ability to ingest and protect ProQuest's 600 terabytes of data. ProQuest will complete the first phase of the SAFE implementation by populating the dark archive with ebook content in 2018 and will support ongoing deposits.

The SAFE service is designed to grow to protect ProQuest's six centuries of books, newspapers, magazines, government documents, video and audio content - the world's largest academic archive.

The SAFE service covers all eligible past and future customer content purchases. If back-up access is needed, customers will have the option to retrieve their content from the SAFE service using a unique SAFE identifier. The first comprehensive annual reports on content coverage will be provided in 2018.

SAFE is the latest innovation in ProQuest's history of preserving the world's scholarship. In 1938, founder Eugene Power used a hand-built microfilm camera to preserve the contents of the British Library, ensuring its survival despite the ravages of World War II. Since then, the company has curated content essential to research and learning, simplified the workflows that surround its use, and connected this content with scholarly communities around the world.

Netherland OASPA endorses the Declaration on Research Assessment - 13 Feb 2018

The Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) has announced the formal endorsement of the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

Developed in 2012 at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology in San Francisco, DORA is a cross-disciplinary global initiative seeking to improve the ways in which scholarly research outputs are evaluated. OASPA joins over 11,000 individuals and 445 organisations including the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK, and OASPA members the Public Library of Science (PLOS), Hindawi, eLife, F1000, and The Company of Biologists as fellow signatories of the declaration.

As the declaration describes, it is crucial for today's wide variety of scholarly outputs to be measured accurately and evaluated wisely. As a method of assessment of outputs, the Journal Impact Factor has been increasingly understood as having a number of limitations; most importantly, over-emphasising the venue of publication of research findings rather than the research itself, and introducing perverse incentives into the scholarly reward system.

DORA therefore recommends the need to eliminate the use of journal-based metrics, such as Journal Impact Factors, in funding, appointment, and promotion considerations; the need to assess research on its own merits rather than on the basis of the journal in which the research is published; and the need to capitalise on the opportunities provided by online publication (such as relaxing unnecessary limits on the number of words, figures, and references in articles, and exploring new indicators of significance and impact).

The full declaration is available at https://sfdora.org/read/.

US Cardiovascular Innovations and Applications journal accepted in the Clarivate Analytics Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) - 13 Feb 2018

The editorial and publishing teams of the Cardiovascular Innovations and Applications journal have announced that the journal has been accepted in the Clarivate Analytics Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI).

The Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) was launched late 2015 as a new database within Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science™ Core Collection, in order to complement the existing Web of Science databases (the Science Citation Index Expanded, the Social Science Citation Index, and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index).

Cardiovascular Innovations and Applications has been accepted in the ESCI for its high-quality peer reviewed content of regional importance. As well as providing a mark of quality for the journal, inclusion in the ESCI will allow papers published in the journal to be searchable, discoverable and citable via the Web of Science.

UK Kudos launches new dissemination management and impact acceleration services - 13 Feb 2018

Kudos, the award-winning service for maximising the reach and impact of research publications, is launching a new dissemination management toolkit for research groups, university departments and REF Units of Assessment. Through this new service, research groups will be able to plan, action and report on a wide range of outreach activities for key outputs and projects, helping build a broad and international audience for their work, and accelerating its impact.

Kudos is offering a limited number of early adopter seats on a six-month preview program, giving early access to features that can be used by research groups to optimize usage, citations and engagement with policy makers, the media and public, industry and educators. The resulting activities and impact evidence will be exportable for university systems and other outcome reporting tools.

Kudos already provides outreach support to over 200,000 individual researchers worldwide, who use Kudos to explain and share profiles of their work (across both specialist academic networks and more generalist social media channels and email), and then to track the resulting impact on a wide range of metrics. Kudos has been working closely with publishers throughout this period to integrate dissemination into the author workflow.

Kudos has also been working with a range of universities over the past two years to provide data on these activities to central impact and communications teams, helping them support and guide researchers in how and where to communicate about their work to improve its performance. This next generation of services from Kudos builds on this experience and momentum with authors at the point of publication, where they are most motivated to undertake outreach.

The pilot commences in March and will run through the summer, with the full service launching in the later part of the year. Participation in the pilot is limited and offered on a first come first served basis.
