UK Wellcome partners with Springer Nature to pilot research data support services - 12 Jul 2018

Wellcome is partnering with Springer Nature on a pilot to support researchers to make their research datasets discoverable and available to the wider research community.

The pilot, expected to run over six to twelve months, will see Wellcome support the costs associated with its funded researchers using Springer Nature's Research Data Support services for an initial fixed number of datasets.

The pilot is open for datasets underpinning research articles from Wellcome-funded studies and from researchers at Wellcome-funded institutes, and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Data can be associated with a submission or publication to any peer-reviewed journal, and is not limited to Springer Nature journals; authors will remain in control of their data, including choice of Creative Commons license which ensure datasets are open access and available for re-use. As part of the pilot, Wellcome and Springer Nature will also work with Wellcome Open Research, Wellcome's publishing platform.

US Wiley reports strong performance in 2018 Journal Citation Reports - 12 Jul 2018

Wiley's performance in the 2018 release of Clarivate Analytics' Journal Citation Reports (JCR) remains strong, maintaining its position as #3 in terms of the number of titles indexed, articles published, and citations received. Wiley saw a 9.5 percent increase in JCR articles, giving it 9.7 percent overall share (+0.6 percent) - its biggest increase since 2008.

Overall, 1,223 Wiley journals were included in the reports, 58 percent of these were society publications - reaffirming Wiley's position as the leading society publishing partner. Wiley journals ranked #1 in 27 categories across 25 titles and achieved 349 top-10 category rankings.

The annual Journal Citation Reports (JCR) are one of the most widely-used sources of citation metrics used to analyse the performance of peer-reviewed journals. The most famous of these metrics, the Impact Factor, is based on the frequency with which an average article is cited in the JCR report year. Alongside other metrics, this makes it an important tool for evaluating a journal's impact on ongoing research.

In Health Sciences, five journals are ranked #1 in their category: Addiction, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, Journal of Cachexia Sarcopenia and Muscle, Periodontology 2000, and World Psychiatry. CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians retained its #1 spot across the entire JCR and its Impact Factor increased to 244.585. World Psychiatry also retains its #1 rank in the Social Science Citation Index, increasing its Impact Factor to 30.000. 70 titles achieved top 10 category rankings and International Journal of Older People Nursing received its first Impact Factor.

In Social Sciences, nearly 350 titles appeared in the 2018 JCR. Of these, seven journals are ranked #1: American Journal of Political Science, Econometrica, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Journal of Finance, Population and Development Review, Public Administration Review, and Social Issues and Policy Review. 71 titles ranked in the top 10 of their category and four titles received their first Impact Factor: Presidential Studies Quarterly, Sociology Compass, PsyCh Journal and Geography Compass. Statistics in Medicine remains the top cited journal in Medical Informatics with over 23,000 citations, twice that of the next title.

In Physical Sciences, Advanced Materials Technologies (4.622) received its first Impact Factor and ChemistrySelect (1.505) its first-half Impact Factor. Wiley journals continued to lead within their subject categories and 46 titles achieved top 10 category rankings. Six titles ranked #1 in their category including International Journal of Energy Research, Mass Spectrometry Reviews and Acta Crystallographica Section C Structural Chemistry. WIREs Computational Molecular Science held its #1 position for the fourth straight year and Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering topped two categories.

In Life Sciences, Food Science and Nutrition (1.521), Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine (2.695), and WIREs Water (3.943) received their first Impact Factor. There are 85 journals in the Top 10 for their subject category within the Life Sciences, notably WIREs Water achieved a top ten rank with its first Impact Factor. Eight titles ranked #1 in their fields including Reviews in Aquaculture, The Palaeontology Society's flagship journal Palaeontology, Global Change Biology, and Global Biology Change Bioenergy.

UK ‘My Artificial Muse’ at ConTech 2018 - 12 Jul 2018

ConTech 2018 has announced that Albert Barqué-Duran, Postdoctoral Fellow in Cognitive Science & Artist, will be its first keynote speaker for 2018.

'My Artificial Muse'; How can A.I. collaborate with humans in creative and artistic processes? is a performance by Albert Barqué-Duran, Mario Klingemann and Marc Marzenit, premiered at Sónar+D (2017) and now in a World Tour, exploring how an Artificial Neural Network can collaborate with humans in the creative and artistic processes.

What is a Muse? Who can be a Muse? Where can we find a Muse? Can a Muse be "artificial"? Do they need to be "physical"? Can a computer-generated Muse be as inspiring as a human-like one? By destroying the classic concept of a Muse, are we creating something better? ConTech 2018, scheduled to be held from November 29 - 30 at Chelsea Harbour Hotel, London, will help find answers to these questions.

US ASTM International launches ASTM SpecBuilder, a collaboration platform for document development - 12 Jul 2018

International standards organisation ASTM International has launched the ASTM SpecBuilder platform which empowers organisations to streamline collaboration and document development for internal documents such as specifications, test methods, guidelines, and procedures.

In an effort to refine the platform, the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) and others have tested SpecBuilder over the past year.

SpecBuilder provides a single platform to ensure organisations' internal drafts, comments, votes, and supporting documents, are uploaded, acted on, and archived within a single secure tool. Specifically, the tool allows team members to manage changes to documents; revise multiple documents simultaneously; accelerate voting processes; add hyperlinks to standards; streamline communications; and securely store and restart projects; and more.

US Association of Research Libraries publishes Library Development, SPEC Kit 359 - 12 Jul 2018

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has released Library Development, SPEC Kit 359, which gathers information to better understand the supporting structures and resources (personnel, financial, and material) and the activities and expectations associated with library development efforts at ARL member libraries.

This SPEC survey retained some elements of the similar 2006 study for longitudinal comparison of the pre-recession environment and the current, post-recession environment. The 2018 survey included new elements to more broadly depict the current role of library development, including 'friend-raising' (efforts intended to generate committed and supportive relationships with outside parties and entities), communication to stakeholders of library value added, and stories and/or descriptive measures provided in these communication efforts. The survey also examined the role of advisory boards in the fund-raising process. Since many academic libraries are either currently or soon will be engaged in a capital campaign, or renovation of an old library, or construction of a new library, the survey also examined the complexities of these common endeavours.

This SPEC Kit includes examples of organisational charts, position descriptions, documents on fund-raising goal setting and development board and friends governance, gift policies, capital campaign literature, and statements on intellectual freedom, inclusion, and diversity.
