US Wiley Education Services partners with Northern Illinois University to support NIU’s online programs - 15 May 2019

Wiley Education Services, a division of Wiley, and Northern Illinois University (NIU) have entered into a partnership to support and expand NIU’s online program offerings. The first phase of the three-year agreement will focus on launching six programs online: a Master of Science in Digital Marketing, a Master of Science in Data Analytics, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing for RNs, a Master of Science in Nursing, a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Master of Public Health.

The partnership with Wiley and expanded online offerings are part of NIU’s Five Year Strategic Enrollment Plan to attract and retain students. Administrators recognised an opportunity for growth by expanding NIU’s high-quality programs and reach through new online offerings. To fully develop this initiative, they sought a proven partner with resources and expertise in launching and managing online programs, as well as the ability to do so in a way that aligned with NIU’s mission and values as a public university.

Wiley was the only higher education services partner that was able to provide its complete menu of services to NIU as part of a fee-for-service arrangement—a result of Wiley’s flexible partnership models that are based on each institution’s specific needs and objectives. Under the agreement, Wiley will support NIU with services in marketing, recruitment and enrollment and student retention. NIU will also take advantage of Wiley’s Ranku platform, a streamlined and searchable online presence, to support all online and hybrid programs. The initial length of the contract is for three years, with two one-year renewal options.

Canada CARL releases updated Canadian Author Addendum and New Author Rights Guide - 15 May 2019

CARL has announced the release of three resources supporting awareness of authors’ rights and ways to retain key rights during the publication process.

The revised Canadian Author Addendum to Publication Agreement is a tool that can be used by authors to negotiate with publishers for the right to retain important rights, such as the ability to share and reuse their work – including the ability to make their work available to all via an open access repository. The accompanying CARL Guide to Using the Canadian Author Addendum provides practical straightforward guidance on how to use the addendum.

The CARL Guide to Author Rights seeks to situate use of the addendum within the broader context of copyright and ownership of scholarly works, including how rights retention can be taken into consideration at each stage of the publication lifecycle. This guide may assist both authors and librarians in knowing when and how to use the addendum as well as informing a broader understanding of author rights as they pertain to the creation and dissemination of academic research.

Based on feedback from member institutions and a recognition that authors increasingly need to retain more of their rights when publishing in order to comply with funder open access policies such as the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications, and to ensure the widest distribution of their works, CARL undertook a detailed analysis and revision of the Canadian Author Addendum (originally adapted in 2007 from the SPARC Author Addendum to Publisher Agreement). The aim was to ensure it reflected the current Canadian copyright context.

The revised addendum includes two notable changes: inclusion of a clause acknowledging prior non-exclusive license grants to authors’ institutions or funders through open access policies (this clause has been part of the SPARC Author Addendum for several years), and expansion of the addendum in order for it to be used in both article and book chapter publishing agreement negotiations.

This guide is the results of the efforts of the Author Addendum and Author Rights Task Group: Lise Brin (CARL), Rosarie Coughlan (Queen’s University), Roger Gillis (Dalhousie University), Stephanie Savage (University of British Columbia), and Jennifer Zerkee (Simon Fraser University), under the guidance of CARL’s Advancing Research Committee.

Netherland LIBER releases two new case studies on research data management support - 15 May 2019

LIBER’s Research Data Management Working Group has published two case studies showcasing research data management support provided by the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the University Library at The Arctic University of Norway (UiT).

The TU Delft case study focuses on the disciplines of design, engineering and technical sciences, while the UiT case study presents UiT’s research development support services for language and linguistics.

The case studies investigate research data support services by looking at the nature of support services expected by researchers, the institutional services in place, the needs and challenges in terms of research data management support, the policy context and the implementation of data management and support services at the two institutions.

The case studies are available on Zenodo: Disciplinary Case Study: Data Management Support at TU Delft; Disciplinary Case Study: The Tromsø Repository of Language and Linguistics (TROLLing).

US AMA announces new educational portal, helps physicians find, track and report CME - 15 May 2019

American Medical Association (AMA) has announced an innovative educational portal - the AMA Ed Hub™ - that gives doctors and other health professionals a streamlined way to earn, track and report continuing medical education activities spanning clinical, practice-transformation and professionalism topics.

The AMA Ed Hub features CME activities from sources such as JAMA Network’s JN Learning™ and the STEPS Forward™ collection of practice-transformation modules and gives one centralised platform to stay updated on medical practice while cutting the hassles that frequently accompany CME reporting.

The AMA Ed Hub—accessible by computer, tablet or smartphone—also features activities from the American College of Radiology (ACR), which is the first medical specialty society content partner to offer education on the platform. Non members of AMA or ACR can still access a selection of ACR CME content at no charge on the AMA Ed Hub.

Doctors and other health professionals can find, take and claim credit for ACR activities on AMA Ed Hub and download a branded ACR CME certificate upon completion.

Every completed activity will be tracked and show up in the AMA Ed Hub transcript. The platform also has the capability to automatically report CME credits earned to select medical licensing boards. Right now that includes the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Pediatrics, the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners and the North Carolina Medical Board. The AMA will expand automatic credit reporting capabilities to additional specialty and state boards.

Belgium EUA and Science Europe join efforts on building strong dialogue between their members - 15 May 2019

The European University Association (EUA) and Science Europe have committed to working together on building a strong dialogue between their members, who share the responsibility of developing and implementing more accurate, open, transparent and responsible approaches, that better reflect the evolution of research activity in the digital era.

At present, the outcomes of scholarly research are often measured through methods based on quantitative, albeit approximate, indicators such as the journal impact factor. There is a need to move away from reductionist ways of assessing research, as well as to establish systems that better assess research potential. Universities, research funders and research performing organisations are well-placed to explore new and improved research assessment approaches, while also being indispensable in turning these innovations into systemic reforms.

EUA and Science Europe will launch activities to further engage their members in improving and strengthening their research assessment practices. Building on these actions, both associations commit to maintaining a continuous dialogue and explore opportunities for joint actions, with a view to promoting strong synergies between the rewards and incentives structures of research funders and research performing organisations, as well as universities.
