UK Web of Science Group and IOP Publishing partner to introduce industry’s first cross-publisher, scalable transparent peer review workflows - 16 Jul 2019

Publons and ScholarOne, both part of the Web of Science Group (a Clarivate Analytics company), have entered into a new partnership with IOP Publishing to introduce the industry’s first cross-publisher, scalable transparent peer review workflows across some of their leading journals in the physical sciences and beyond.

Transparent peer review shows the complete peer review process from initial review to final decision, and has gained popularity with authors, reviewers and editors alike in recent years.

In the first instance, IOP Publishing’s transparent peer review service will be rolled out across JPhys Materials, Journal of Neural Engineering and Environmental Research Letters before the end of the year.

The new workflows ensure that, alongside the published article, readers can access a comprehensive peer review history, including reviewer reports, editor decision letters and authors’ responses. Each of these elements is assigned its own digital object identifier (DOI), which helps readers easily reference and cite the peer review content. Transparency may increase the quality of the peer review process, and can also aid teaching of best practice in peer review.

The transparent peer review workflow complies with best-practice data privacy regulation, ensuring the individual preferences of authors, peer reviewers and journals are met.

UK Cambridge University Press' new journal to explore the impact of data science on engineering - 16 Jul 2019

Cambridge University Press has announced a new open access journal that will explore the transformative effect of data science on engineering.

Launched this week with support from global charity Lloyd's Register Foundation, Data-Centric Engineering will look at how the revolution in sensing, measurement, and data capture is driving the discovery of new materials, and new methods of manufacture, operation, control and construction.

It will be the first cross-disciplinary journal to focus on research at the intersection of data sciences such as applied maths, statistical and computing science, with all areas of engineering. Alongside cutting-edge research, position papers will also be published exploring related ethical, legal, security and policy issues.

Mark Girolami from the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering will serve as the Editor-in Chief of Data-Centric Engineering. The journal was officially launched at the International Congress for Industry and Applied Maths (ICIAM) in Valencia, with the first issue due for publication in 2020. It will be free to read on Cambridge Core, the online repository of books and journals published by the Press.

Global charity, the Lloyd's Register Foundation, has pledged support for the new journal, providing funding that will enable unfunded researchers to publish their research on an open access basis.

The Foundation has been at the forefront of advocating and funding the use of data-intensive technology in engineering, as part of its mission to secure high technical standards of design that enhance the safety of life and property.

Earlier this year, Rush D. Holt, chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and executive publisher of the Science family of journals, announced plans to retire. Holt has decided to retire by September 1 and will be taking accrued vacation leave until that time.

The search process for the next CEO was already underway and remains on track. In order to ensure a smooth transition, the AAAS Board has named Alan Leshner as Acting CEO of AAAS.

Leshner previously served 13 years as AAAS CEO prior to Holt’s tenure in the leadership role. He has also served as director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, deputy director and acting director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and in a variety of senior roles at the National Science Foundation.
