UK ConTech 2018 opens in just two weeks’ time - 16 Nov 2018

ConTech 2018 tickets are going out this week. The inaugural ConTech opens in just two weeks' time.

Every organisation creating and managing content collects mountains of data on its users and content - some valuable, some not. Using techniques like artificial intelligence, machine learning and visualisation, data science helps distinguish between the two - telling the story behind the data, predicting what will happen in the future, and zooming in on user needs in ways that would have been impossible before.

At ConTech 2018 attendees will learn how this new generation of technology is impacting the world of content.

This is an event for information and content people (publishers, content managers and information managers) who want to understand how moving towards data-driven content will impact their businesses, operations and the content they create and deliver. ConTech 2018 is the only conference where the worlds of content and data science meet.

Here are just a few of the things to see and do at the event: Data Driven product sessions from Editage, Ontotext, Morressier and DeepSEARCH9; Pharma 4.0: Embracing Opportunities for Information in a Digital Healthcare World - a special markets session- Helen Malone, Director of the Information Hub at GlaxoSmithKline and President of the Pharma-Documentation-Ring; Keynote "My Artificial Muse"; How can AI collaborate with humans in creative and artistic processes? - Albert Barqué-Duran, PhD, Honorary Research Fellow & Artist, City, University of London, Lacuna Lab Berlin Berlin - London - Barcelona; and see displays and hear from Oiga Technologies, InfoDesk, Third Iron, DeepSEARCH9, JoVE, Research Information and Info International.

ConTech 2018 hosts the next DataBeers London event at the end of day 1. If you have a passion to better understand data science then this is a must attend event! https://contechlive.com/databeers/

ConTech 2018 takes place at Chelsea Harbour Hotel, London from November 29-30.

US Elsevier integrates Geofacets with Esri ArcGIS to help geoscientists find information faster - 16 Nov 2018

Elsevier, the information analytics business specialising in science and health, has announced the integration of Geofacets, its information solution for exploration and development, with ArcGIS, the flagship product of Esri®, the global market leader in geographic information system (GIS) software. Researchers can now seamlessly discover and analyse information from more than 100 of the top geoscience journals and over 1.9m maps without ever leaving ArcGIS.

The new plug-in functionality, called Geofacets for ArcGIS, which was introduced earlier this year, gives geoscientists the ability to make more informed exploration decisions and reduce risk thanks to Geofacets' 1.9m maps, figures and tables, without ever having to leave the application to search. The integration delivers a smooth and intuitive user experience, enabling users to go from hypothesis to validation to analysis, faster than ever.

Geofacets for ArcGIS provides users with one primary information solution that combines the mapping and analysis capabilities of ArcGIS, with the information and data discovery solutions of Geofacets. This facilitates increased user focus, and efficient knowledge management and collaboration, and means that users can spend more time analysing and acting on information instead of searching for it. The single interface means those companies which rely on data from ArcGIS to support their decision making can optimise operations, decrease risk and increase geoscientists' productivity by allowing them to spatially search for validated maps, figures and tables all in one place. The plug-in will also enable users to compare their proprietary models and information with validated insights from across the globe.

Currently geoscientists spend up to 80 percent of their time searching for and formatting geoscience information and data as they work on tackling a variety of major problems, including volatile oil and gas market conditions and reduced academic research budgets. Geofacets has been designed to help oil and gas companies prioritise opportunities, optimise resources and manage risk. It combines a vast, vetted library of maps, figures and tables with powerful location-based search, so companies find information fast. Whether it is georeferencing maps or structuring tabular data, Geofacets formats content so it is easier to integrate and analyze.

UK Microbiology Society’s new journal, Access Microbiology, now open for submissions - 16 Nov 2018

The Microbiology Society has announced the launch of Access Microbiology, which is now open for submissions.

Access Microbiology provides a new service to the microbiology community, offering researchers from all over the world the opportunity to publish research outputs that are often lost due to not being seen as 'high impact'.

Access Microbiology will cover the full spectrum of microscopic life forms, from bacteria and viruses to fungi, protists, archaea, and algae, and will accept all approaches from computational, biotechnology, and laboratory work, to environmental, clinical, and veterinary studies.

In an effort to provide professional development opportunities, Access Microbiology has a unique editor mentor/mentee scheme as part of its Editorial Board. Early career researchers will partner with experienced editors to help them develop editorial skills and advance their careers.

Access Microbiology joins the Society's portfolio of journals: Microbiology, Journal of General Microbiology, Journal of Medical Microbiology, Microbial Genomics and International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology and will be a fully open access journal. To celebrate its launch, all article processing charges are being waived off for a limited time. This means it is currently free for authors to publish as well as being free to read.

4open, a multi- and inter-disciplinary Open Access journal, has published its first article in chemistry. The article ‘Characterization and modelling of the polarization phenomenon to describe salt rejection by nanofiltration' by Yassine Mdemagh et al. is free to access on the 4open website.

Presenting a new model to determine the thickness of the polarisation's boundary layer and the concentration of polarisation, this article explores the application of dead-end filtration to the concept of nanofiltration used in water treatment.

4open is published by EDP Sciences under the auspices of the Société Française de Physique, and in partnership with Theodor-Billroth-Academy® & Int'l Consortium of Research Excellence of the TBA®.

The journal encourages submissions in the fields of natural sciences, medicine and technology, including material sciences and engineering.

US Anythink joins Allen County Public Library as early adopter for OCLC Wise - 16 Nov 2018

Anythink, the public library system for Adams County, has signed on to implement OCLC Wise, the first community engagement system for US public libraries.

Anythink joins Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as an early adopter for Wise. The Wise system transforms traditional library management with a holistic people-centric approach. It combines the power of customer relationship management, marketing, and analytics with integrated library system (ILS) functions such as circulation, acquisitions, and discovery. Wise is designed around people and driven by data, empowering library staff to better understand and meet community needs.

OCLC will continue to partner with more early adopters to support development of key priorities and shape future library innovation. This special group of libraries will work closely with OCLC's product team whose strategy and road map are designed with flexibility to support this important collaboration.

Wise is a customisable and proven service that is currently used by more than 75 percent of public libraries in the Netherlands. Wise is being tailored to address the specific needs of US public libraries.
