UK IET announces full release of Inspec Analytics, its new research intelligence tool - 18 Jul 2019

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has announced the full release of Inspec Analytics, a research intelligence tool to help research professionals explore global trends in physics, engineering and technology research.

With the changing landscape in scholarly communications placing increased emphasis on measuring the impact of research outputs, Inspec Analytics has been developed to support researchers, strategic managers and libraries in assessing the value and impact of research and make strategic decisions about the direction of their projects, departments and collaborations.

The full release includes the ability to investigate the research collaborations of organisations, to filter results by location and organisation type, and enhanced interactive views which provide deeper insights into high-level and niche disciplines, allowing users to explore research trends based on organisations, controlled terms or subject classifications. Strategic managers will also benefit from being able to see an organisation’s global ranking for each field and compare one institution with another to set benchmarks.

Users can currently access Inspec Analytics directly via the IET’s platform. The IET is also currently working with vendor partners to allow a seamless experience for users with access to existing Inspec platforms including: EBSCO Host, Engineering Village and Web of Science. Inspec Analytics is available as part of the Inspec subscription.

UK IOP Publishing announces inaugural issues of energy and biomedical journals - 18 Jul 2019

The first content has been published in two IOP Publishing’s journals portfolio – Progress in Energy (PRGE) and Progress in Biomedical Engineering (PRGB).

The two journals were launched to cater for the needs of specific research communities, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and offering researchers the opportunity to collaborate and shape the future direction of research in their fields.

PRGE aims to address the wide-ranging and important issues facing the world’s energy transition system. Nigel Brandon of Imperial College London serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal. The three articles in PRGE’s first issue reflect the range of topics the Journal will address.

PRGB features reviews and opinion pieces in the most significant and interesting areas of biomedical engineering research. Metin Sitti of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal. In PRGB’s first issue, there are two review and one perspective articles.

Canada Library and Archives Canada joins the Canadian Research Knowledge Network as institutional member - 18 Jul 2019

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) has announced Library and Archives Canada (LAC) as its 77th institutional member. As the national custodian of Canada’s documentary heritage, LAC has been contributing as an institutional member of Canadiana.org, which merged with CRKN in April 2018, since its inception.

Earlier in 2019, LAC, along with CRKN members, contributed to making the Canadiana collections available at no charge to users.

As part of CRKN's merger with Canadiana.org, CRKN’s by-laws were updated to include optional institutional membership for Library and Archives Canada, as well as the Toronto Public Library and Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec.

Prior to the merger with Canadiana, CRKN collaborated directly with LAC to provide funding for the Héritage project, in which Canadiana and LAC worked jointly to digitise the microfilms of LAC’s most highly used archival collections. Representatives of LAC sit on CRKN’s Preservation and Access Committee and on both of its associated task groups, the Heritage Content Priorities Task Group and the Platform Technical Task Group.

US Research Square offering AJE Author Services & Videos via new platform - 18 Jul 2019

Researchers who post a preprint to Research Square can now access AJE author services and Research Square videos to improve their manuscript and better communicate their findings. After the launch of the multidisciplinary platform in Fall 2018, Research Square has seen record uptake and now hosts more than 3,200 preprints, making it the world’s fastest growing preprint platform.

Authors can choose from AJE English language editing, and manuscript, figure and table formatting services to improve their manuscript’s readability while they wait for community feedback. Research Square videos let authors promote their research to a wider audience by providing a synopsis in a 1-minute overview ‘video byte’ or a 2-3 minute animation known as a video abstract.

The addition of author services that can improve and better position early stage research toward publication is a step forward for preprints.

Since 2004, AJE has provided manuscript preparation services to help researchers successfully communicate their work. Having edited over 700,000 manuscripts, AJE claims to be the world’s largest author services provider.

Research Square will continue to add existing services to the platform such as editorial badges in integrity, reproducibility, and statistics. Badges will allow preprint authors to demonstrate the quality of their article to editors and reviewers and speed up the time it takes to peer review.
