UK Clarivate Analytics' Cortellis Content-as-a-Service to accelerate drug discovery and development - 19 Jul 2019

Clarivate Analytics plc, a global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation, has launched an expansion to its Cortellis suite of life science intelligence solutions with programmatic access to scientific data typically used in drug discovery and early stage development. The initial launch includes continually-updated systems biology datasets, which enable researchers to analyse molecular pathways and advance discovery research.

With R&D and commercialisation costs exceeding $2 billion to bring just one asset to market and average sales per asset declining by 50 percent since 2010, companies are increasingly challenged to improve pipeline productivity. This means they require more efficient and cost-effective methods to access, extract and analyse large, complex datasets – as well as enhance their visibility to potentially-viable novel therapies. Conducting this research necessitates highly targeted searches using discrete information sets not supported by traditional database licensing models.

Leveraging the Cortellis Content-as-a-Service (CaaS) model, researchers can now access industry-recognised statistical packages to efficiently build scripts and automate workflows that incorporate vast scientific and discovery intelligence, which includes more than 2 million molecular interactions, 1.5 million molecular pathways, 270,000 gene variants and 2.5 million publication references. This will help researchers to quickly test new concepts, hypotheses and analytic tools, ultimately fostering new use cases and greater pipeline productivity. The service is powered by Cortellis Cloud, an integrated, scalable technology platform that serves as a single point of access to Cortellis content.

Cortellis CaaS enables direct access to industry-leading content to Clarivate customers and partners, and facilitates interoperability with partner and other third-party applications via APIs. Programmatic access to Cortellis data will continue to expand in the coming months, adding APIs that encompass both discovery and pre-clinical research; python libraries that apply machine learning code; integration with third party open-source content exchanges; and new services that deliver content under a usage-based model.

US American Society of Human Genetics set to launch new open access journal - Human Genetics and Genomics Advances - 19 Jul 2019

The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) will launch Human Genetics and Genomics Advances, a new journal that will provide a high-quality, scientific society-led, fully open access option for the human genetics and genomics research community. The Society also highlighted expanding content directions for its flagship publication, The American Journal of Human Genetics (AJHG).

HGG Advances will publish across the complete spectrum of human genetics and genomics research. It will aim to build the human genetics and genomics knowledge base, and will be home for a wide range of research that meets ASHG's enduring standards for scientific rigor, validity, and reproducibility. The journal will offer rapid review and consider direct submissions as well as offer prompt, easy cascade from AJHG for authors interested in that option. It may also experiment with publishing and review models that speed and advance research goals. Submissions will be accepted starting later in 2019, with the first articles slated to be published in spring 2020.

Both AJHG and HGG Advances will remain owned by the Society and will be published in partnership with Cell Press, ASHG's longstanding publishing partner.

Bruce Korf, AJHG Editor, has played a significant role in helping the Society assess this opportunity to expand its publishing program and has worked with a distinguished group of ASHG members from many fields to discuss potential areas of innovation for the new journal.

US Atypon acquires Inera - 19 Jul 2019

Atypon, a technology provider in scholarly and professional publishing, has acquired Inera, whose suite of editorial and XML solutions transforms publishers’ workflows.

Inera’s eXtyles product family automates the most time-consuming aspects of document production—cleanup, formatting, editing, and conversion to XML—and claims to be a natural complement to Atypon’s growing portfolio of online authoring, discovery, and publishing products.

The Inera team, as part of Atypon, will continue its focus on developing state of the art publishing workflow solutions, including expansion of Inera’s recently introduced technology for fully automated conversion of unstructured Word content to JATS XML.

In addition to developing world-class software, Inera is actively engaged in advancing publishing through its participation in cross-industry initiatives, professional organisations, and the development of key content standards including JATS, BITS, and STS.

The latest of five acquisitions over the past several years, Inera’s technology will further the development of Atypon’s end-to-end solutions for publishers of all types.

Israel Ex Libris Esploro research services solution now live at the University of Iowa - 19 Jul 2019

Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, has announced that the Ex Libris EsploroTM research services solution is now live at the University of Iowa.

With Esploro, institutions can automatically capture and disseminate their researchers’ output and data, manage research assets from all disciplines in one place for the full range of disciplines (including Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts), showcase researcher profiles, and facilitate workflows between the library, the research office, and researchers.

The implementation of Esploro at the University of Iowa is an important milestone for Ex Libris in their endeavour to increase the productivity and impact of research activities.

Esploro helps institutions fulfill strategic research goals and assist researchers in maximising productivity. Libraries and research offices can automate and simplify processes such as the deposit of research data, enrichment of metadata, updating of researcher profiles, and measuring research impact.

Esploro is built on the Ex Libris higher-ed cloud platform, which also supports the Ex Libris Alma® library management solution, Primo® discovery solution, and Pivot® research funding solution that are already in use at the University of Iowa.

The University of Iowa is one of five development partners that have partnered with Ex Libris, along with ten early adopter institutions, in developing the Esploro solution. Four of these institutions are scheduled to implement the solution in 2019, with many others scheduled to go live in 2020.

UK eLife introduces first demonstration of the open-source publishing platform Libero Publisher - 19 Jul 2019

eLife has announced the first working example of its open-source journal hosting and post-production publishing system, Libero Publisher.

The demo showcases some of the essential components of a journal on Libero Publisher, including a homepage and research articles with author lists and affiliations, figures and references. Additional features are being added weekly, sometimes daily, as the platform evolves quickly to accommodate increasingly complex content types.

Libero Publisher is designed to help publishers deliver beautifully presented content to readers on any device, wherever they are. It is just one component of Libero, a community-driven and open-source platform of services and applications being built to help content providers do more with everything they publish.

Libero Publisher is the latest milestone in a collaboration announced earlier this year between eLife, the Collaborative Knowledge Foundation (Coko), Hindawi Limited and Digirati, to oversee the development of the Libero product suite and foster community engagement. This announcement is preceded by the first release of Libero Reviewer, a new initial submission wizard in place at eLife. All products within the end-to-end Libero publishing suite are showcased on a new resource from eLife, at https://libero.pub, and include Libero Reviewer (for submission and peer review), Libero Producer (production workflow management), Libero Publisher, and Libero Data Hub (business intelligence tools).
