German Knowledgespeak completes first on-site interview at the Frankfurt Book Fair - 07 Oct 2010

STM industry news service Knowledgespeak interviewed Andrew Richardson, Managing Director Europe, WK Health Medical Research, on Wednesday, as part of the on-site interviews series it is conducting at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Andrew shared a number of insights through the course of the interview.

When asked about the needs of vertical search consumers and how these have evolved over the past few years, Andrew commented that mobile devices, immediacy of content, and globalisation were key influencers. Given the increasing access to mobile devices, real time access to relevant, more immediate and more topical content is becoming more urgent among medical information users. For example, Wolter Kluwer is looking at the requirements of doctors, much more at the bedside as they become un-tethered.

When queried on how the company was addressing the issues of redundancy, relevance and searchability in the medical information domain, Andrew quoted the example of Ovid SP's feature, "My Projects" that enables users to seamlessly integrate research from sources outside Ovid.

Regarding convergence of journal articles and databases, Andrew mentioned that the OVID platform lets users search databases, journals and books simultaneously.

The complete interview will be published in Knowledgespeak in the near future.

Netherland Elsevier introduces new publishing model to increase publication speed - 07 Oct 2010

STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced the launch of Article-Based Publishing - a new publishing model that publishes articles as final and citable without needing to wait until a journal issue is complete. With an increasing focus on online publishing, there is a growing need for innovative publication models geared towards individual articles instead of the print-based issue model. Article-Based Publishing is the assigning of final citation data on an article-by-article basis, decoupled from the compilation of the journal issue itself.

For centuries, academic articles have been published in journals, issue by issue. While this practice has ensured organised citation information, it has also created boundaries for the timing of each published article. Now, Article-Based Publishing makes it possible to publish articles in their final form, with volume, issue and page numbers, before the entire issue is finalised. This new way of publishing speeds up the publication of articles by an average of 7 weeks.

For journals using the Article-Based Publishing model, articles are published in an 'Issue in Progress' on SciVerse ScienceDirect. The traditional volume and issue numbering system will remain as this is the industry standard, and it also provides context to when the complete journal issue was published. Next to the Issue in Progress, a diminishing Article in Press list will still exist for accepted manuscripts and uncorrected proofs only. These articles, although not officially published, are still valuable for fast access to new research results.

Elsevier, in 2011, also intends to make it possible to have multiple issues in progress at the same time for one journal. This will allow simultaneous publication of special, thematic and regular issues, further reducing article publication times.

US ACS Journal Publishing Agreement to replace ACS Copyright Status Form - 07 Oct 2010

The American Chemical Society has announced that its publications division will begin rolling out a new publishing agreement in mid-October that expands author rights and clarifies author responsibilities. The ACS Journal Publishing Agreement (JPA) is a result of ACS' ongoing efforts to provide the best possible publishing experience for authors of ACS' suite of 38 peer-reviewed journals, including its flagship Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The JPA replaces the previous ACS Copyright Status Form. It gives ACS authors a number of new rights regarding the use of their manuscripts and outlines certain behaviors that are expected of ACS authors. The new agreement specifically addresses what authors can do with the different versions of their manuscript - use in theses and collections, teaching and training, conference presentations, sharing with colleagues, and posting on websites and repositories. The terms under which these uses can occur are clearly identified to prevent misunderstandings that could jeopardise final publication of a manuscript. The agreement clarifies that the transfer of copyright in Supporting Information is nonexclusive. Authors may use or authorise the use of Supporting Information in which they hold copyright for any purpose and in any format. Further, it extends key terms of use to an author's previously published work with ACS - as long as the same conditions of use are met.

Behaviors expected of ACS authors are more fully addressed throughout the agreement. The JPA shines a spotlight on two current ACS programmes. The first is ACS AuthorChoice, which provides authors or their funding agencies the opportunity to sponsor immediate, unrestricted online access to their final published article. The other is ACS Articles on Request, which permits convenient, free distribution of journal article reprints online via author-directed links provided to the author when their article is published online.

The JPA is a direct result of the extensive review and consultation process undertaken by a task force consisting of ACS journal authors, editors, librarians, governance members, and legal counsel who identified activities in which today's authors typically engage, or would like to engage. The JPA incorporates the task force's recommendations and more clearly communicates ACS Publications' policies regarding the use of submitted, accepted and published works.

US Amazon announces 70 percent royalty option for the Kindle DTP in the UK - 07 Oct 2010

Online books retailer Amazon.com, Inc., US, has announced that the 70 percent royalty option for the Kindle Digital Text Platform (DTP) is now available in the UK. For each book sold from the Amazon.co.uk Kindle Store, authors and publishers can choose this option immediately and start earning a 70 percent royalty, net of delivery costs. The Kindle Digital Text Platform claims to be a fast and easy tool which allows publishers and authors worldwide to add their books and start selling in the UK Kindle Store (and Amazon's global Kindle Store on www.amazon.com) in minutes.

Delivery costs are based on file size, and pricing is set at 0.10/MB. This new option will be in addition to and will not replace the existing DTP standard royalty option. DTP authors and publishers will now be able to select the royalty option that best meets their needs for books sold in the UK and US. Books receiving the 70 percent royalty will have access to all the same features and be subject to all the same requirements as books receiving the standard royalty rate.

Under this royalty option, authors and publishers will earn 70 percent of the list price of their books, net of delivery costs. To qualify for the 70 percent royalty option, books must satisfy a set of requirements. These include: the author or publisher-supplied list price must be between 1.49 and 6.99; the list price must be at least 20 percent below the lowest list price for the physical book; the title is made available for sale in all geographies for which the author or publisher has rights; and the title will be included in a broad set of features in the Kindle Store, such as text-to-speech.

This list of features will grow over time as Amazon continues to add more functionality to Kindle and the Amazon.co.uk Kindle Store. The 70 percent royalty option is for in-copyright works only.

US New version of JCB DataViewer released - 07 Oct 2010

Glencoe Software, Inc., The Journal of Cell Biology (JCB) and The Rockefeller University Press have announced the release of the next version of the JCB DataViewer, a scientific image data publication system. First released in December 2008, the JCB DataViewer has been under continuous development to support new image data formats and provide new functionality for its users. Now, for the first time, scientists will be able to download the original image data associated with scientific articles published in the JCB.

The JCB DataViewer currently includes original image data (multi-dimensional image data taken directly from a microscope imaging platform) for 110 manuscripts. The latest release allows JCB readers to download image data in OME-TIFF format, the open scientific image data format released by the Open Microscopy Environment. This format is open, non-proprietary, and stores critical image metadata - information about the original imaging system and data acquisition parameters. This allows readers to access how the data included in a published paper were originally acquired and to re-analyse the data using their own software.

Glencoe Software, Inc. is a member of the Open Microscopy Environment Consortium and provides commercial access to and customisation of OME resources. It focuses on enterprise-level, mission-critical scientific image database tools and deployment strategies.

The Journal of Cell Biology is published by The Rockefeller University Press. All editorial decisions are made by active scientists in conjunction with in-house scientific editors. JCB content is available for free six months after publication. Authors retain copyright to their publications and third parties may reuse the content under a creative commons license.
