STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has collaborated with Tsinghua University Department of Computer Science and Technology in Beijing to introduce four new research productivity enhancing applications for SciVerse Applications.
The applications – GeneTUKit, Company Search, Patent Search and Topic Cloud – seek to help researchers identify the hottest topics being published, find relevant companies, patents or experts, and automatically discover genes within articles.
GeneTUKit recognises gene mentions in article and abstract content within SciVerse ScienceDirect or SciVerse Scopus and links the concepts to knowledge databases like NCBI. Company Search identifies companies relevant to a SciVerse ScienceDirect search query and links to profile information on PatentMiner. Patent Search finds patents related to a SciVerse Hub or SciVerse ScienceDirect search query, ranks results based on relevance and links to patents on PatentMiner. Topic Cloud displays top subtopics related to a SciVerse ScienceDirect query as a word cloud.
Elsevier began collaborating in late 2010 with Associate Professor Jie Tang at the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University to develop Expert Search, an application that identifies computer science experts through Arnetminer, followed by the development of the Company Search, Patent Search and Topic Cloud applications. Elsevier partnered with Assistant Professor Minlie Huang to create the GeneTUKit application.
The ongoing collaboration has also led to the launch of the China Science Challenge, an online competition open to university students to develop solutions that help researchers in their research tasks.

Publishers Nature Publishing Group (NPG), Digital Science and Palgrave have issued a joint statement on the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) legislations in the US. NPG, Digital Science and Palgrave provide a range of publications, information and digital services to a wide variety of customers, including scientists, scholars, teachers and students, as well as members of the public.
The parties are concerned that the approaches proposed by the SOPA and PIPA, currently under consideration by the US federal government, are likely to create unintended counterproductive effects in many of the communities they serve, and to the functionality of the Internet itself. NPG, Digital Science and Palgrave have therefore decided not to support SOPA or PIPA.
The companies have said that they support appropriate and proportionate initiatives to protect copyright and other forms of intellectual property for the benefit of its creators and society as a whole. While they support actions that effectively target the systematic illegal sharing of copyrighted works, they do not support approaches that would undermine and put at risk the legitimate activities of their customers and other responsible users.
The publishers have stated that as innovative and progressive publishing and technology companies, they seek to enable the open exchange of ideas, especially in scholarly communities. This is because, according to them, it is ultimately the main way in which human knowledge is created and disseminated, a process that they exist to support. They believe that the proposed legislation could unintentionally harm this process. In addition, the proposed interference with the infrastructure of the Internet is seen to risk unintended consequences that could reduce its benefits for everyone.
The companies were represented by Timo Hannay, Managing Director, Digital Science; Steven Inchcoombe, Managing Director, Nature Publishing Group; and Dominic Knight, Managing Director, Palgrave.

Global library cooperative OCLC, US, has announced that following a successful five-month trial, the Article Exchange feature is now available within the WorldCat Resource Sharing service and, where available, through an ILLiad add-on. This new feature is available at no charge to OCLC libraries that use WorldCat Resource Sharing and ILLiad Resource Sharing Management Software, and will be offered in WorldCat Navigator, in regions where available, and VDX later this year.
Article Exchange provides a single, secure location where lending libraries can place and borrowing libraries and their users can retrieve requested articles obtained through interlibrary loan. Lending libraries scan documents and upload them to the site and notify the borrowing libraries of the documents' availability. The site generates a unique URL and password for each document. An e-mail button enables the lender to insert the borrower's e-mail address and send the link directly to the library.
Once a file has been retrieved, it remains available for five days or five views. After 30 days, unviewed files will be removed. A file can be picked up a maximum of five times for each URL/password combination. Access to the current experimental site will end on January 31.
An OCLC Resource Sharing and ILLiad Users Group Meeting will be held on January 22 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Dallas Convention Center, Room D227, during the ALA Midwinter Meeting. For those unable to attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting, OCLC will hold an OCLC Resource Sharing and ILLiad Users Group Virtual Meeting on January 26, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., Eastern Time. Interested parties may register for this event through the OCLC website.
