US Images from Bridgeman Education now searchable via EBSCO Discovery Service - 24 Feb 2012

Electronic research databases provider EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO), US, has announced a new partnership with Bridgeman Education allowing images from Bridgeman Education's extensive collection to be searched within EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). The agreement will add metadata from the Bridgeman Education collection into the Base Index of EDS.

Bridgeman Education is the online education resource of the Bridgeman Art Library, the world's leading source of fine art, cultural and historical images. The collection, which is available by subscription to individuals or institutions, includes over 390,000 high-quality images for teaching and learning. The resources found in Bridgeman Education provide the visual culture of every civilisation and every period from prehistory to the present. Its extensive coverage of subject areas will appeal to a broad range of researchers.

Bridgeman Education is part of a growing list of publishers and other content partners that are taking part in EDS to bring more visibility to their content. Partners include the world's largest scholarly journal and book publishers including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, and thousands of others. Partners also include content providers, such as LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, World Book, ABC-CLIO, and many others.

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customised index of an institution's information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box. The EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers (and growing) in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers.

Healthcare information provider Wolters Kluwer Health (WK Health), US, and the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) have announced the launch of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology (APJO). The new online journal is dedicated to facilitating exchange of expertise among ophthalmologists and visual scientists in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of WK Health, is the publisher of record for the journal.

Highlights of the premier issue include an editorial and perspective piece on the introduction and potential future role of femtosecond laser cataract surgery. Other features include state-of-the-art reviews on ocular surface reconstruction, endophthalmitis after cataract surgery, and intravitreal injections for macular diseases, along with important new clinical and basic science research studies.

The journal has received enthusiastic support from renowned eye experts globally. It has attracted a prestigious advisory and editorial board, drawn from South Asia, East Asia, and Australia/New Zealand as well as the US and Europe. The Advisory Board includes Dr. Alexander J. Brucker of the University of Pennsylvania, Editor-in-Chief of RETINA: The Journal of Retina and Vitreous Diseases and Retinal Cases & Brief Reports—also published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Over 40,000 members of the APAO's member organisations will receive unlimited, free access to each bimonthly issue of the APJO. In addition, there will be free access for non-APAO members throughout the first year of publication to help drive awareness and readership. The editorial board has issued a call for papers, encouraging authors to submit original manuscripts for publication in APJO.

The premier edition of the online-only journal is now available at http://www.apjo.org, where authors can learn more about manuscript submissions.

US SAE International and ABOUT Publishing Group announce publishing partnership - 24 Feb 2012

Engineers and technical experts association SAE International, US, has announced a strategic partnership with ABOUT Publishing Group. The deal enables SAE International to sell selected ABOUT Publishing market reports.

This new endeavour will focus on content that is highly pertinent to mobility engineers, especially for those interested in the field of electrification of the vehicle. The most recent report just released by ABOUT Automotive analyses the hot topic of EV/Hybrid batteries, and offers a realistic, independent perspective – steering clear of much of the hype that surrounds this sector. The study covers 13 battery and 15 battery material manufacturers (with a particular focus on those based in Japan) and all leading auto makers.

The agreement is part of SAE International's new Content Partnership Program, which seeks to expand SAE International's publishing programme, including the resale of premium content from sources such as commercial publishers, think tanks and research-driven corporations, co-publishing opportunities, recruiting new authors with expertise in cutting-edge technologies, and acquiring exclusive magazine and newsletter content.

UK IJEqH publishes first supplement of selected abstracts from 6th International Conference of the International Society for Equity in Health - 24 Feb 2012

Open access publisher BioMed Central, UK, has announced that the International Journal for Equity in Health has published its first supplement of selected abstracts from the Sixth International Conference of the International Society for Equity in Health (ISEqH), held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, last year. The theme of the 2011 conference, 'Making Policy a Health Equity Building Process' explored a departure from the idea that equity requires an interdisciplinary approach as well as a research and policy partnership, showing clear experiences about how to reach equity in health.

The supplement includes 8 of the most interesting abstracts presented at the conference, specially selected by the IJEqH Editorial Board. The best paper selected from the ISEqH meeting is now published. The article by Roberto JF Esteves presents a comprehensive rigorous assessment of the healthcare reforms in Brazil and Colombia in terms of the effects on inequity reduction.

International Journal for Equity in Health (IJEqH) is the official journal of ISEqH. The journal has been the natural home for research on health equity for more than 10 years, providing a platform for research on issues that influence the health of populations. IJEqH publishes articles that focus on discussion of political, policy-related, economic, social and health services-related influences, particularly with regard to systematic differences in distributions of one or more aspects of health in population groups defined demographically, geographically, and/or socially.

US ARL invites applications for Executive Director position - 24 Feb 2012

The Association of Research Libraries is seeking an energetic and forward looking leader to advance the role of research libraries in higher education and the broader information environment. The Executive Director will have a unique opportunity to influence public policy, reshape scholarly communication, and lead the transformation of research libraries through ARL's strategic agenda.

ARL is a non-profit, member-driven institutional organisation representing 126 research and academic libraries in North America. ARL's mission is to influence the changing environment of scholarly communication and the public policies that affect research libraries and the diverse communities they serve. The Association also provides leadership on new and expanding roles for ARL libraries to engage in the transformations affecting research and research-intensive teaching and learning.

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of ARL and is responsible for the administration of all operations and programmes. The ARL Executive Director also provides oversight and counsel to two affiliate organisations founded by ARL, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI).

The Executive Director should be an authority on the ways in which universities and other research institutions integrate, preserve, disseminate, and create knowledge, and be able to serve as an articulate and effective spokesperson for the public policy issues facing research libraries in the 21st century. The incumbent must be well versed in the ways in which current and emerging digital technologies are changing the academy and the roles of research libraries. S/he not only must be ready to address the issues surrounding information production and access, but also must be a persuasive leader in the effort to build models of scholarly communication for the next century. S/he must have a grounded understanding of the North American research library community and the role of the ARL in it.
