Wiley-Blackwell, the STM and scholarly publishing business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., US, has launched two new interdisciplinary review publications - WIREs Developmental Biology and WIREs Membrane Transport and Signaling.
WIREs Developmental Biology will focus on how single cells and fertilised eggs produce a complex, fully patterned adult organism. Edited by John C. Gerhart of the University of California, Berkeley, Gail R. Martin of the University of California, San Francisco, and Eric F. Wieschaus of Princeton University, this new resource is published in partnership with the Society for Developmental Biology (SDB).
WIREs Membrane Transport and Signaling will explore the regulated transport of molecules through cell membranes and the transmission of extracellular signals by cellular receptors. Both are essential processes for cell survival and cell-cell communication. The publication is edited by Alexej Verkhratsky of The University of Manchester and Maiken Nedergaard of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, University of Rochester.
Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews, known as WIREs, are unique hybrids of encyclopaedias and journals which emphasise the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in research and education.
Each title provides authoritative, encyclopaedic coverage of diverse scientific fields with high-quality reviews commissioned from international expert contributors. Each review article is fully citable and qualifies for abstracting, indexing and ISI ranking.
Access to both WIREs titles is free for the first two years.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has released ‘A New Day for Website Archiving 2.0,’ an updated analysis by copyright expert Jonathan Band of the legal arguments available to support website archiving by research libraries.
Most websites reportedly contain copyrighted works and may themselves be subject to copyright. Research libraries interested in collecting these materials will therefore need to consider whether and how their projects can be carried out within the law. Asking permission to copy websites is often difficult or impossible, so the doctrine of fair use, which allows copying without permission, will play an essential role in justifying these practices.
Band's analysis focuses on the fair use doctrine and takes account of key developments in the case law, as well as a very helpful memo by the US Patent and Trademark Office, and the recent release of the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries. In his original 2006 analysis, Band argued that website archiving by libraries was strongly supported by fair use. The updated analysis concludes that the arguments in support of this practice have only gotten stronger, as practice in this area has gone unchallenged for six years, and the courts continue to endorse a progressive interpretation of fair use.

The UK's Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) is organising a webinar on February 29 at 13.30 that will offer a practical demonstration of the Journal Usage Statistics Portal (JUSP). Jo Lambert, senior development officer at Mimas and Angela Conyers of Evidence Base, will highlight the time and cost saving benefits one can achieve by using JUSP to manage usage statistics. The JUSP is projected as a 'one-stop shop' for academic libraries to download and analyse their journal usage.
Using open source software could also improve the efficiency of an organisation, it is suggested. A team from OSS Watch will be leading the following two webinars in March.
The first webinar will offer advice to open source project managers on how to increase the chances of sustainable community engagement in their project. The second webinar will discuss how to increase the longevity and sustainability of an academic project or research outputs by choosing the right open source licence.
Future webinars will explore how to increase the citations of research data, extend a Virtual Learning Environment for the benefit of students and access and use a wealth of free online moving images and sound to enhance teaching and research.
