Digital Publishing Interest Group publishes Group Note of DPUB IG Metadata Task Force Report - 12 Jan 2015
The Digital Publishing Interest Group has published a Group Note of DPUB IG Metadata Task Force Report.
The Metadata Task Force of the DPUB IG found, through extensive interviews with representatives of various sectors and roles within the publishing ecosystem, that there are numerous pain points for publishers with regard to metadata but that these pain points are largely not due to deficiencies in the Open Web Platform.
Instead, there is a widespread lack of understanding or implementation of the technologies that the OWP already makes available for addressing most of the issues raised. However, some of the very technologies that are little used or understood in most sectors of publishing are widely used and understood in certain other sectors (e.g., scientific publishing, libraries).
Priorities that have emerged are the need for better understanding of the importance of expressing identifiers as URIs; the need for much more widespread use of RDF and its various serialisations throughout the publishing ecosystem; and the need to develop a truly interoperable, cross-sector specification for the conveyance of rights metadata (while remaining agnostic as to the sector-specific vocabularies for the expression of rights).
This Note documents in detail the issues that were raised; provides examples of available RDF educational resources at various levels, from the very technical to non-technical and introductory; and lists important identifiers used in the publishing ecosystem, documenting which of them are expressed as URIs, and in what sectors and contexts. It recommends that while little new technology is called for, the W3C is in a unique position to bridge today's currently siloed metadata practices to help facilitate truly cross-sector exchange of interoperable metadata. This Note is thus intended to provide background and a context in which concrete work, whether by this Task Force or elsewhere within the W3C, may be undertaken.

Amy Brand of Digital Science will also present information about a new contributor taxonomy currently in development.
The day will wrap up with a final session titled 'Innovative Infrastructure for the Sustainability of Scholarly Communication,' presented by Rebecca Kennison of the Open Access Network. This session will cover creative solutions for sustaining and funding long-term access to scholarly content and its delivery in various forms.

Hearst Health announces venture investment in health optimization pioneer Welltok - 12 Jan 2015
Hearst Health, a unit of Hearst Corporation, announced a venture investment in Welltok, Inc., creator of the CaféWell platform, which allows insurers, hospitals and other health managers to work with consumers to help them achieve better health. The announcement was made by Richard P. Malloch, president of Hearst Business Media, the group that includes Hearst Health and its venture group, and Dr. Gregory Dorn, president of Hearst Health. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.
The Welltok platform helps people manage their own health with guidance that is tailored to their individual needs. Health plans and healthcare providers are able to incentivise and reward consumers for healthy activities.
Hearst Health Ventures takes minority positions in startups that offer health IT solutions and technology-enabled healthcare services. The healthcare venture fund is part of the Hearst Health network, which includes FDB (First Databank), Zynx Health, MCG and Homecare Homebase.

Education company Cengage Learning and LearnLaunch, an organization dedicated to expanding Boston's edtech ecosystem, have announced a partnership to boost the Boston edtech community.
Recognising Boston as a center for both excellent education and technology innovation, Cengage Learning has made a commitment to participate in LearnLaunch's Accelerator program, which identifies edtech start-ups and provides them with mentoring opportunities to help them grow.

WVU receives $1 million grant to develop scholarly publishing platform - 12 Jan 2015
The West Virginia University has been awarded $1 million from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's Scholarly Communications and Information Technology program to develop a new academic publishing platform for mixed-media and print-based scholarship materials.
Dubbed Cairn, this editorial-management system will be a modular publishing platform for print-like and scholarly multimedia journals, books and data sets.
The platform includes features that will help editors and publishers provide an accessible, secure, sustainable, flexible, open, free, and collaborative environment for authors and readers, and which will help them engage in building and reading multimedia-rich, peer-reviewed content.
Bengler, a design and development team in Oslo will develop the publishing system.

WriteLaTeX, a provider of tools for writing scholarly papers in an online collaborative academic world, is relaunching in 2015 under the new name of Overleaf as part of a major upgrade to the service. The move is part of their efforts to make the power of LaTeX more accessible to more people.
When writeLaTeX (now Overleaf) started out a couple of years ago, it was to solve a very specific problem; there was no easy way to share and collaborate upon LaTeX files over the internet, making it hard to write scientific research papers effectively.
