Elsevier announces nine new Medicinal Chemistry Books at American Chemical Society National Meeting & Exposition in Boston - 14 Aug 2015
STM publisher Elsevier has announced nine new medicinal chemistry books, including the latest edition of The Practice of Medicinal Chemistry, considered 'The Bible' by many medicinal chemists for nearly twenty years, which will be available in September.
This highly respected resource for professors, students and researchers, along with eight other books, will be featured in the medicinal chemistry portfolio in Elsevier booth #231 at the 250th American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting & Exposition, August 16-20, in Boston. Elsevier's new books support the ACS Expo theme, 'Innovation from Discovery to Application.'
Edited by Drs. Camille Wermuth, David Aldous, Pierre Raboisson and Didier Rognan, the fourth edition of The Practice of Medicinal Chemistry offers a thorough treatment of basic medicinal chemistry principles, as well as new and expanded coverage of the latest technologies and approaches in drug discovery. The latter three books edited by Dr. Atta ur-Rahman and his colleagues are the first titles available as part of the recent distribution and co-publishing alliance between Elsevier and Bentham Science. They will be distributed through Elsevier's global sales channels, including ScienceDirect, providing researchers greater access to needed chemistry content covering pharmaceutical science, medicinal chemistry, and other multi-disciplinary topics.

Results of Publishers Licensing Society survey of text and data mining activity announced - 14 Aug 2015
The Publishers Licensing Society recently conducted a survey of text and data mining activity to which ALPSP Members were invited to respond. A total of 111 unique responses were received and the results will be unlikely to surprise many of those involved in scholarly and professional publishing.
Overall, approaches from those wishing to mine data have been small, totalling 91 for the whole of 2014. Only 15 percent of respondents reported receiving requests to mine data. All 111 respondents indicated they had seen no significant change in the number of requests following the introduction of the UK exception.
What is contributing to such a low number of requests? There are at least two industry-related reasons: More publishers are including a clause in their subscription licences which allows and clarifies the access to the content for TDM; the introduction of services such as CrossRef TDM and CCC's XML for Mining. PLSClear also helps streamline permission requests, meaning that publishers are dealing with manually.
Respondents also noted, in all but one instance, requests were cleared in less than 2 weeks.

Publishers Communication Group hires Sarah Zhao as new China sales representative - 14 Aug 2015
Sales and marketing consultancy Publishers Communication Group (PCG) has hired Sarah Zhao as its new sales representative based in China, effective July 1.
Working from Beijing, Zhao will promote and sell content to institutions and consortia in the China market on behalf of PCG's client publishers. This new direct appointment expands upon PCG’s presence in China previously conducted through a local partnership, reflecting the growing demand for access to the market through dedicated staff on the ground.
Zhao has over ten years of industry experience selling and promoting digital content on behalf of a wide array of publishers, most recently as Sales and Marketing Manager for China Publisher Services, Ltd. She also brings to PCG her network of Chinese librarians, consortia decision-makers, and relationships with authorised Chinese importers. She previously worked for the Beijing offices of Elsevier, World Scientific Publishing Company, and founded her own business assisting international publishers navigate the native import, media, library and tradeshow landscape.
The establishment of a permanent sales position in China rounds out PCG's sales team in emerging markets around the world, including existing offices in Sao Paulo, Brazil and New Delhi, India.

Blackboard acquires Nivel Siete - 14 Aug 2015
Education technology company Blackboard Inc. has announced the acquisition of Nivel Siete, a leading Moodle provider operating in Latin America. By joining their forces, the two companies will be able to offer more services and solutions to organizations that leverage Moodle, a widely used learning management system (LMS), and support a greater number of learners to achieve their educational goals.
Nivel Siete offers a variety of learning solutions, hosting, support and consulting services that help organisations succeed in their teaching and learning initiatives, especially those that focus on the use of e-learning for talent management and training. Headquartered in Colombia, the company serves over 200 customers in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.
This announcement marks the latest investment made by Blackboard in open source after the recent acquisitions of Remote-Learner UK and X-Ray Analytics technology. Since officially joining the open source community in 2012, Blackboard has been contributing to Moodle with code, quality assurance, platform integrations and bug fixes. It has also supported many community gatherings across the world.
