US Elsevier to introduce next-generation personalised learning solution, Sherpath , at NLN Education Summit - 30 Sep 2015

STM publisher Elsevier will unveil its new, next-generation personalised learning solution at the National League for Nursing (NLN) Education Summit, from September 30 - October 2, in Las Vegas. The first of its kind for nursing education, Sherpath uses data, analytics and adaptive techniques to track students' interactions with content, assessments and simulations while providing a highly focused learning path for each student.

Sherpath empowers faculty to easily customise the learning modules to their specific course outcomes. Programs will now have real-time, learning analytics to monitor their program against accrediting body standards and student success towards licensure.

Developed by Elsevier Education experts using original research with students and instructors, Sherpath addresses the current needs at the educator, student and program levels. It is a personalised learning suite that integrates digital learning materials and the technology necessary to ensure nursing education program success for students, instructors and institutions. With a seamless, responsive and optimised platform, Sherpath provides a tailored learning path at the individual level, guiding the student to success on formative and summative assessments and ensuring a simple and engaging process of genuine learning.

NLN Education Summit attendees can visit the Elsevier booth (#521) for a hands-on demonstration of Sherpath's capabilities and benefits. Attendees who stop by for a demonstration will qualify for a special giveaway.

Additionally, healthcare program directors can use Sherpath to monitor each program, course and campus at their organizations to ensure accreditation compliancy. Sherpath is currently piloted in 15 schools throughout the U.S. and will be available commercially in Summer 2016.

Professional information services provider Wolters Kluwer has released Lippincott CoursePoint+, a fully integrated and personalised platform that drives course and curriculum success to prepare students for practice.

Lippincott CoursePoint+, available across the curriculum for Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) and core Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) courses, is a single destination for learning where faculty and administrators can assess student performance in real-time to make data-driven teaching decisions, facilitating early remediation at the point of learning. The latest release of CoursePoint+ delivers more premium content than ever, including annual content updates, online access to Stedman's Medical Dictionary for Health Professions and Nursing, and multiple tools for contextual learning. These include adaptive learning powered by prepU with built-in SmartSense links, which provide instant remediation for a more focused study experience to ensure student success in courses and on the NCLEX®.

US Cornell University Library and ProQuest partner for faster, more efficient book selection and acquisition - 30 Sep 2015

ProQuest is working with Cornell University Library to develop a dynamic book-selection system that will aggregate metadata from multiple sources into a single streamlined interface. This will enable highly efficient selection and acquisitions workflows. The custom interface is part of a new agreement in which Cornell University Library will use ProQuest as the primary source for its English-language print books, a significant expansion of Cornell University Library's long-standing relationship with Coutts Information Services for print and ebook Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) programs.

The new interface will aggregate book metadata from multiple sources into a single selection and acquisition workflow in OASIS (Online Acquisitions and Selection Information System). OASIS, a web-based system for searching, selecting and ordering print and electronic titles, matches the market's broadest title database with powerful search tools to locate titles quickly and efficiently. OASIS will be used by Cornell University Library as its primary source for securing English-language print books from North America, the UK and other regions of the world.

Coutts Information Services joined ProQuest in April 2015, bringing its expertise in collection development, broad catalogue of print and digital titles, and MyiLibrary and OASIS platforms. Coutts is an integral part of ProQuest's Books unit, which encompasses the widest selection of ebooks supporting research and a rapidly evolving technology framework for discovery, access and management of book content. ProQuest's vision is to combine the unit's collective strengths, creating an integrated workflow for print and digital content that will save librarians time and provide a superior book experience for end users.

UK The International Union of Crystallography launches new journal platform - 30 Sep 2015

The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) has launched a brand new IUCr Journals website, for researchers involved in structural determination. The new design is clean, bright and adaptable to different screen sizes. Many subtle changes have been introduced to the article format to help improve the overall clarity of the HTML text.

A toolbox of useful features takes the form of a set of buttons. Whenever appropriate, the same buttons appear on the summary (abstract) page or table of contents associated with the article. This allows the reader to obtain relevant information about the article (e.g. citation format, usage statistics, supporting information) from the most convenient entry point.

A particularly useful new feature is the detailed usage information available for every article, showing numbers of citations as recorded by a number of monitoring services, as well as a detailed interactive graph of all article downloads in both PDF and HTML formats from the IUCr Journals server.

The new website provides clearer marking of the article's category, citation and digital object identifier (DOI), together with its copyright and licensing information and a clear indication if it is open access. Prominent at the top of each page is a link to the article's status and publication history as certified by the CrossMark system.

IUCr Journals have provided free and easy access to supporting information, especially the structural data files (CIFs, structure factors or Rietveld profiles). Now, experimental, coordinate and geometry data from the CIF can be viewed online at the end of any article reporting a small-unit-cell structure.

The '3dview' visualisation interface has been improved and provides a common interface for three-dimensional interactive images of all classes of structure: biological macromolecules, inorganics, small molecules, metal–organic complexes. For small structures, there are also tools to view or predict powder profiles, and to perform similarity searches among other structures published in IUCr Journals.

Each journal home page highlights a number of recent articles of particular interest or significance. In many cases these highlighted articles have accompanying commentaries establishing their importance, either in featured articles on the general IUCr homepage or as commissioned companion pieces in the journals themselves.

New journal sidebars allow for a variety of content related to the specific focus of each journal. For example, Acta Crystallographica Section B has a sidebar link to a gallery of amazing visualisations of incommensurate modulated structures published in the journal. These use JSmol to produce animations in time that correspond to lattice distortions in space. Journal of Synchrotron Radiation focuses on beamline papers in a sidebar.

The journal home pages also feature constantly updating lists of latest, most read and most cited articles. For each journal, a new "about" page provides a detailed synopsis of that journal's main features, and includes an interactive map showing the distribution of authors worldwide.

UK Publishing Technology and Altmetric announce new partnership - 30 Sep 2015

Altmetric and Publishing Technology have announced a new partnership that will enable publishers hosting content on the ingentaconnect platform to embed Altmetric badges onto their article pages, giving greater visibility of online impact data for their titles.

Under the new arrangement, ingentaconnect publishers will benefit from a streamlined integration process, making it easy for them to track and review the online attention data Altmetric will collect relating to their published content.

Altmetrics have been developed in recent years as a way of monitoring the online attention a research output receives immediately after publication. These metrics can then be used alongside more traditional indicators of impact, such as citations and download counts, to understand the broader influence and dissemination of the work.

Altmetric tracks a range of sources, including mainstream news outlets, public policy documents, blogs, research highlight platforms, social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter, and (more recently) Wikipedia. Mentions of articles in these sources are displayed on the "details page" for each research output, accessible via the Altmetric donut visualisation. A score is also assigned to indicate the volume of all the attention each output has received.

Publishers on ingentaconnect with an interest in adding Altmetric data to their journals should contact their Account Manager.
