German Highlights of the third day of Frankfurt Book Fair - 16 Oct 2015

On the third day of the Frankfurt Book Fair, highlighted events included the opening of the 'Media and Technology Forum' as part of the 'New European Media Summit; Peace Prize winner Navid Kermani discussed Iranian literature; and a press conference highlighted the results of the 'Frankfurt Undercover' discussions throughout the week where 30 international writers debated the topic of extremism. The Frankfurt Book Fair is the international publishing industry's biggest trade fair – with 7,100 exhibitors from more than 100 countries, around 270,000 visitors, over 4,000 events and around 9,300 accredited journalists in attendance.

Wandi S. Brata of Gramedia Pustaka Utama, Indonesia's largest publishing house, spoke about his company's leading position in the Indonesian book industry and give an overview of Indonesia's compelling market environment during Morning Coffee & CEO Talks at Hall 4.0 C80.

Passing from one culture to another either inspires us with new perspectives, or it throws up challenges and hurdles. Efforts to transcend borders can exist in many dimensions – both personal and institutional. A discussion at the Weltempfang - Stage, Hall 3.1 L25 focussed on how a change of location can influence biography and literature. It looked at the impact of international education projects on national university systems.

US AIP Publishing begins opening federally funded research to the public - 16 Oct 2015

AIP Publishing has announced that it is one of the first STM publishers to begin making federally funded research articles it publishes in its journals publicly available through CHORUS (Clearing House for the Open Research of the United States). Over the next twelve months, AIP Publishing will make over 900 government funded articles freely available to the public via CHORUS, helping the U.S. government expand access to research funded by the American public.

Under the leadership of former Executive Director of the American Institute of Physics (AIP), Fred Dylla, AIP and AIP Publishing have been a driving force in the founding of CHORUS, enabling the organisation to develop a cost-effective solution to meet the requirements of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) memorandum of 2013.

The memorandum, aimed at government agencies with annual R&D expenditure of over $100M, requires that federally funded research be made freely available within one year of publication.

Australia Elsevier provides Royal Flying Doctor Service access to ClinicalKey - 16 Oct 2015

STM publisher Elsevier has announced that it is providing the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) access to ClinicalKey, Elsevier's primary online clinical information tool, to help doctors, nurses and other health professionals access the latest clinical information through mobile devices.

ClinicalKey facilitates evidence-based clinical decision-making for practitioners on the go, assisting RFDS' provision of vital health services to rural Australia.

The RFDS provides critical medical services to rural and remote parts of Australia. A recent report by the Centre for International Economics details that death rates in remote areas are thirty five percent higher than in cities, and life expectancy of country people is two years shorter than for city people. Country people see doctors half as often as those in the city, specialists a third as often, and mental health services a fifth as often.

The RFDS is best known for aeromedical retrieval, but it is more than a Flying Doctor and provides GP and nurse clinics, tele-health, dental care, mental health programs, mobile patient care and healthy living and wellness programs. In the last year they made 282,000 patient contacts, conducted 54,705 patient transports and delivered 82,305 remote area tele-health consultations.

Brazil ProQuest launches new Spanish language portal - 16 Oct 2015

ProQuest is broadening its reach to customers across the globe with the roll out of its next local language portal. The latest in this initiative is for the Spanish speaking countries of Latin America and comes hot on the heels of the launch of the Portuguese portal last month.

As with the Portuguese site, the new Spanish portal features information about ProQuest products and services, helpful resources such as brochures and case studies, and is the gateway to ProQuest's global website. It retains the highly popular local language blog, keeping visitors up-to-date on news and events taking place in Latin America.

This new Spanish portal is the third in a series of new sites which began early in 2015 with the launch of a new microsite in China. Additional sites are planned for various languages across Europe and the Middle East in 2016.

US EBSCO Information Services’ online learning platform offers tools for academic success and workplace readiness - 16 Oct 2015

EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) is introducing PrepSTEP™, an online learning platform that helps students build the skills that can shape their futures, in school and beyond. The move is in response to the urgent need for schools to improve the college and career readiness among students.

PrepSTEP is a unique collection of academic and career-related resources that offers skill-building in reading, writing, math, science, basic computing, and workforce skills, as well as preparation for high-stakes exams like high school equivalency, college admissions and placement, and occupational licensing. It is currently available in two versions to meet the specific needs of each student population—two-year colleges and technical schools, and four-year colleges and universities. Coming soon, there will be a high school version. PrepSTEP is developed by LearningExpress, an award-winning educational software provider and an EBSCO company.

PrepSTEP features hundreds of easy-to-use interactive tutorials, practice tests, and eBooks that students can access anytime, anywhere, online, from any device with an Internet browser. It provides the tools students need for self-directed study; supplemental skill-building for developmental programs; soft skills training in time management, communications, and other workplace skills; as well as test preparation and career information in some of today's most popular occupations. There is also a personal portfolio feature so students can save their work and track progress.

Recent studies indicate that nearly 60 percent of incoming college freshmen need remedial classes. PrepSTEP is designed to help these students by providing supplemental resources for remedial coursework, self-directed skills improvement, and test preparation, to help them score higher on college placement tests and remain engaged and on track to complete their programs.

The addition of PrepSTEP offers colleges the opportunity to give their students the preparation that can change their futures and help them step up to success.

UK Overleaf offers Springer authors with tool to ease author writing and submission process - 16 Oct 2015

Overleaf, an academic authorship tool, has announced that Springer will integrate 20 Springer journals and the Springer Transfer Desk with the Overleaf online LaTeX and rich text collaborative writing and publishing platform.

Overleaf, a cloud-based scientific authoring platform, will make it easy for researchers to write, collaborate, and publish technical documents, with the provision of a simplified writing and publishing tool for Springer authors.

These 20 Springer journals, which include Climate Dynamics, Transport in Porous Media, and Environmental and Resource Economics (full list to follow) will each offer simplified, 1-click submission links from the Overleaf platform directly into the Springer submission system via the Aries, Editorial Manager ingest service.

Each journal will provide an online link from the journal website to the Springer article template within the Overleaf platform. This will provide authors with a fast, simple way to collaborate and write their articles, with no manual setup required. Overleaf 'TeXperts' are also on hand to help with any questions the authors have while writing their papers. With real-time, automated composition, the author can see what the finished file will look like - as they write.

Once the manuscript is complete, the author will be able to submit the file for publication with 1-click. The file and necessary metadata will automatically transfer to the Springer submission system via the Aries, Editorial Manager ingest service – significantly simplifying the submission process.

The full list of 20 journals taking part in this initial set up will be announced later in October.

Library automation and preservation solutions provider Ex Libris® Group has announced that the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) has decided to adopt the Ex Libris Primo® discovery and delivery solution.

An NLM working group evaluated a number of options and ultimately selected Primo, primarily because of its advanced technology, extensive road map, and active customer communities. The Primo solution meets the NLM requirements for seamless interoperability with its integrated library system (ILS), real-time availability of holdings and item records, the delivery of physical materials requested by onsite users, and the display of NLM authority records. In addition, as specified in the Primo road map, the Primo solution will be made compliant with the security standards outlined by the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and as such will fulfill the NLM's security requirements.
