German Thieme realigns leadership structure - 01 Apr 2016

As of April 1, 2016, Dr. H.C. Albrecht Hauff, publisher and managing partner of the Thieme Publishing Group, and Thieme’s managing director Dr. Wolfgang Knüppe will appoint four executives to the newly formed extended management board. With the new management line-up, the leading provider of media and information services for the medical professions strengthens its position in view of future challenges, brought mainly by the ongoing trend towards digitalisation.

Dr. Albrecht Hauff and Dr. Wolfgang Knüppe have been managing the Thieme Group for many years. Under their leadership, the organisation has evolved into one of the largest publishing houses in Germany, with an annual turnover approaching €150 million. To secure Thieme's future, Hauff and Knüppe will implement a strategy of digitalisation and internationalisation. Furthermore, they want to continue to develop Thieme's core markets in the area of German-language medical publications and services as well as coordinate marketing and sales activities more closely.

This strategy will be reflected on the highest level by the new, extended management board that will comprise four divisions. The appointed heads of three of these departments already hold leadership positions within the Publishing Group: Dr. Udo Schiller, currently Director of Clinical Publishing, will join the new management board as manager for the German-language division; Brian D. Scanlan, managing director of Thieme's international subsidiaries, will be in charge of international markets. Erwin Selg, as the Publishing Group's CIO, will be responsible for all technology and digitalisation activities. In addition, there will be a Marketing and Sales division, which will cover all Thieme initiatives regarding customer generation and retention, sales channels, and distribution partners. Effective immediately, Thieme will begin searching for a suitable manager to fill this position.

According to Hauff and Knüppe, the four divisions will be crucial in shaping Thieme's future. Each existing business unit and current department will be assigned to one of these divisions.

Netherland OCLC and the National Library of the Netherlands sign new long-term agreement for metadata management and discovery services - 01 Apr 2016

OCLC and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), the National Library of the Netherlands, have signed a new long-term partnership agreement for metadata management and discovery services that will increase the visibility of Dutch public libraries' collections.

Under the new agreement, library metadata workflows will be moved to WorldCat, the world's most comprehensive network of data about library collections, and the WorldShare technology platform. WorldCat Discovery Services will also be integrated in the Dutch national infrastructure to increase the visibility of public library collections.

The National Library of the Netherlands was one of the founding partners of the national library infrastructure that have been cooperating closely throughout the years through Pica, which later became OCLC, in the Netherlands. Since January 2015, under the Public Library Provisions System Act (Wsob), the National Library plays a central role in continued development of public libraries, and is responsible for development of a national digital library.

Key elements of the new partnership with OCLC include standardised and long-term metadata management with a focus on efficient workflows, and increased visibility of collections for all Dutch public library organisations and their users. The WorldCat Discovery API will be integrated in the national digital library infrastructure, which will enable public libraries and their users to find information they seek in the rich collections of libraries around the world through WorldCat.

The new long-term agreement is the latest in a decades-long record of library automation collaboration in the Netherlands. The Dutch library community will be the first in EMEA to have a nationwide OCLC infrastructure in place.

US ProQuest partners with premier Chinese publishers connecting researchers with essential Asian language materials - 01 Apr 2016

ProQuest is supporting libraries specialising in Asian Studies or interested in building their Chinese-language collection with carefully selected scholarly titles from renowned Chinese publishers and university presses – all available for perpetual access. Until now, acquiring a comprehensive, high quality collection of Chinese-language titles has been time-consuming and difficult for librarians. Now, ProQuest simplifies the acquisition process for librarians and improves the research experience for students, researchers, and faculty.

The available titles represent the start of an ongoing commitment by ProQuest, with new publishers added over time. ProQuest will begin on building this offering with publishers Huazhong University of Science & Technology Press (HUSTP), Peking University Press, China Intercontinental Press, China Economic Science Press, Hong Kong University Press and China Translation Publishing House.

These authoritative Chinese-language titles will be available on ProQuest's new Ebook Central, EBL and ebrary platforms. The Ebook Central platform launched earlier in 2016 and supports users with an intuitive, user-centric design that makes it faster and easier to discover, evaluate, and access titles while increasing user engagement with time-saving tools for note-taking, highlighting, and instant citing. Users can read online or take advantage of offline reading options including DRM free chapter downloads and full book downloads. Additionally, the user interface can be translated into traditional and simplified Chinese.
