US Elsevier announces publication of Current Trends in Information Literacy - 14 Oct 2016

STM publisher Elsevier has announced the publication of Current Trends in Information Literacy, the third volume in its Library Learning Trends eBook series. The series offers librarians and information resource managers access to free digital volumes that support and encourage learning and professional development in library sciences.

The Library Learning Trends series taps into the knowledge and expertise of authors for Chandos Publishing, the Elsevier imprint covering library and information science (LIS). Each title includes content excerpts focused on a central theme, providing readers with an introduction to new ideas and information on that topic.

Elsevier previously announced two other volumes in the series, Facing Contemporary Challenges in Librarianship, and Marketing the Academic Library.

All of the Chandos LIS books are available on the Elsevier Store and on ScienceDirect, Elsevier's full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from over 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and more than 35,000 book titles.

In order to meet content needs in library and information science, Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify the gaps in coverage of the topics. Editorial teams strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. The new books, which will educate the next generation of librarians and resource managers, are key examples of how Elsevier is enabling science to drive innovation.

US Wolters Kluwer’s POC Advisor recognised by Fierce Innovation Awards: Healthcare Edition - 14 Oct 2016

The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, has been recognised by this year's Fierce Innovation Awards: Healthcare Edition, a unique awards program from the publisher of FierceHealthcare, FierceHealthIT and FierceMobileHealthPayer. Wolters Kluwer's clinical surveillance product, POC Advisor™, received top honors in the 'Clinical Information Management' category as well as an overall award of 'Best in Show: Fiercest Cost-Saving Solution.'

The Fierce Innovation Awards promotes the competitive spirit and initiative that spurs the development and implementation of game-changing services, technologies and solutions. Winners were selected by a distinguished panel of CIOs from renowned U.S. hospitals and healthcare systems, including Aspirus, Cook Children's Health Care System and JFK Health System, among others. A complete list of judges can be found at https://www.fierceinnovationawards.com/healthcare/2016#our_judges.

All applications were evaluated based on the criteria: care efficiency, competitive advantage, financial impact/value, market need, patient experience/satisfaction, quality of care and patient outcomes and overall fierceness and innovation. Finalists were selected based on calculation of the judges' scores in each area.

Wolters Kluwer is being recognised for its innovative, industry-leading product, POC Advisor, which is initially being used to accelerate the early detection and treatment of sepsis. Using automated, real-time surveillance to aggregate, normalize and analyze patient data from disparate clinical systems, POC Advisor sends patient-specific alerts and evidence-based treatment advice directly to the point of care via mobile devices and clinical portals.

In a clinical study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), POC Advisor demonstrated a high level of alert accuracy, reaching sensitivity and specificity rates of 95% and 82% respectively, thereby eliminating the common problem of alert fatigue among clinicians. To achieve this unprecedented accuracy, the platform runs patient data against hundreds of clinical rules that account for comorbid acute infections, medication abnormalities and chronic diseases specific to the individual. If sepsis results are positive, alerts and evidence-based advice are immediately sent to clinicians to ensure early treatment.

The study results showed a 53% reduction in sepsis mortality and a 30% decline in sepsis-related 30-day readmissions. Annually, Huntsville clinicians are estimated to prevent approximately 200 deaths hospital-wide through the utilization of POC Advisor, while the hospital stands to realize a significant reduction in the financial toll of sepsis.
