US Nominations for Elsevier's innovation hub for biotech and pharmaceutical startups, The Hive, now open - 13 Jul 2017

Elsevier, the information analytics company specialising in science and health, has announced that applications and nominations for The Hive, its innovation hub for biotech and pharmaceutical startups, are now open. This year, at least eight leading-edge startups working on innovative goals will be chosen to become part of The Hive, with an unlimited number of places for exceptional candidates.

The Hive's startups will receive complimentary access to Elsevier's suite of digital solutions for 18 months - helping them rapidly advance their critical research, and improve productivity. The Hive, first launched in 2016, highlights the superior levels of innovation in the startup biotech and pharma sector; as well as demonstrating to larger companies, and other areas of the research community, how R&D challenges can be overcome.

Elsevier's R&D Solutions are utilised everyday across the life science industry to enable research and accelerate confident decision making in drug discovery and development. The industry faces significant challenges; from overcoming antibiotic resistance in the absence of new drugs, to reducing the chance of unanticipated adverse events, to being able to deliver on the promise of precision medicine. For the industry to make meaningful impact, access to the latest insights from data, powerful analytics, and technologies to help R&D professionals, is essential. For the startups that will be joining The Hive, Elsevier's R&D Solutions will help them achieve faster scientific breakthroughs, giving them the potential to change the industry's landscape and improve the lives of patients.

The top candidates for The Hive 2017 are pre-revenue pharmaceutical and biotech startups, and other small companies, that are actively involved in the advancement of early stage research; with a minimum of ten scientists on staff. Enrollment for The Hive is open now and candidate companies may apply or can be nominated. Candidates will complete a questionnaire about their research, funding and goals for the next 18 months; followed by Elsevier's Solution Finder to assess which solutions will be most beneficial. Prior to final selection, designated candidates will then be invited to undertake a phone interview.

US American Physical Society joins the Initiative for Open Citations - 13 Jul 2017

Scientific publication rates are on track to double every nine years. In order to help uncover scholarly links and scientific progress as revealed in citation data associated with the rapidly expanding numbers of publications, the American Physical Society (APS) has joined several other major publishers that make their publication reference data freely available in the public domain through the Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC).

APS has long participated in CrossRef, which allows academic publishers to cross reference digital publications. In joining I4OC, APS citation information is now publicly available. Subscriptions to the APS Physical Review journals or the publications of other participating organisations are not required to access the citations available through I4OC.

According to the Initiative for Open Citations I4OC, key benefits include the establishment of a global public web of linked scholarly citation data to enhance the discoverability of published content, both subscription access and open access. This will particularly benefit individuals who are not members of academic institutions with subscriptions to commercial citation databases; the ability to build new services over the open citation data, for the benefit of publishers, researchers, funding agencies, academic institutions and the general public, as well as enhancing existing services; and the creation of a public citation graph to explore connections between knowledge fields, and to follow the evolution of ideas and scholarly disciplines.

US Atypon announces new features in latest release of Literatum - 13 Jul 2017

A fully integrated eReader, a new multi-user license framework, and three new login options are among the new features in Atypon's latest release of Literatum, the most widely used and fully featured online publishing platform for the professional and scholarly publishing industry. The first of three regularly scheduled yearly updates, this release also includes Atypon Insights, a new business intelligence module that significantly upgrades Literatum's reporting capabilities.

Atypon's new in-browser eReader replaces PDF with EPUB to provide a superior online and offline reading experience for both books and journal articles—an industry first—and to keep readers on publishers' sites. By providing an alternative to PDFs, the Atypon eReader also reduces unlicensed content usage. EPUB is a non-proprietary open publication standard and a portable format that can be easily shared.

Based on open-source technology developed by the Readium Foundation, the Atypon eReader provides synchronized reading across multiple devices and offline in-browser support. Upcoming releases will include annotation, social reading, collaboration, and a personalised user dashboard.

Atypon Insights is Literatum's new business intelligence module. It collects event-level behavioural data on readers' content usage to uncover actionable intelligence. Its drag-and-drop tools and clear, familiar visualisations allow for on-the-fly report creation and interactive data exploration.

Three new authentication solutions-secure 'remember me' cookie-based login, passwordless login, and login via phone number verification-give publishers new options for providing their readers with fast, seamless access to their content while eliminating password-related security risks.

Atypon has also added a new multi-user license framework that enables publishers to control concurrent content usage by combining multiple variables, including duration and the number of simultaneous users and/or access requests. These new parameters enable publishers to offer consumer rental options, emulate a lending library, and create new broader offers for unserved market segments.

Additional new Literatum features in this latest product release include proprietary search algorithms that improve relevance ranking; more accurate search results for inaccurately spelled names; a new tool that enables designers to build customised website search queries; faster search query results; and faster content availability.

Literatum has been in continuous development for 20 years. More than two-thirds of Atypon's staff is devoted to software engineering.
