UK First International Digital Preservation Day to be held on November 30, 2017 - 07 Aug 2017

The first International Digital Preservation Day will be held on November 30, 2017 and will draw together individuals and institutions from across the world to celebrate the collections preserved, the access maintained and the understanding fostered by preserving digital materials.

Organised by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and supported by the Open Preservation Foundation, the ICPSR and other digital preservation networks, International Digital Preservation Day is open to participation across all sectors, from anyone interested in securing digital legacy.

International Digital Preservation Day aims to provide a window into the daily activities of those involved with or contemplating digital preservation. Data creators, curators and consumers from around the world will be invited to showcase their own 'Digital Preservation Day' through blog posts on the DPC website, tweets and instagrams using the hashtag #IDPD17. The DPC's own contribution will be in the publication of new resources aimed to support public and institutional advocacy for digital preservation activities.

This activity is just one of the ways the Coalition raises awareness of the strategic, cultural and technological issues which make up the digital preservation challenge. The DPC also supports members through other advocacy activities, workforce development, capacity-building and partnership; helping members to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services, and derive enduring value from their digital collections.

A detailed programme and more information about International Digital Preservation Day will be issued over the coming months.

Netherland German universities reject latest Elsevier offer for a new country-wide licensing agreement for its research portfolio - 07 Aug 2017

A consortium of German universities, research institutes and public libraries has reportedly rejected the latest offer from Dutch publishing giant Elsevier for a new country-wide licensing agreement for its research portfolio. Germany's chief negotiator says the offer does not meet the requirements of German researchers.

According to report in Chemistry World, the rejection in early July comes after nearly a year of negotiations during which time rock-hard positions on both sides have scarcely budged, leaving a huge gap yet to be bridged. The German side, represented by a consortium founded in 2014 called Project DEAL, includes the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Fraunhofer–Gesellschaft, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Helmholtz and the Leibniz associations, and the Max Planck Society. Backed by these research giants plus dozens of universities, Project DEAL is demanding a nationwide contract from Elsevier that includes fair pricing, open access in Germany to all papers authored by researchers at German institutions, and permanent full-text access to all electronic journals published by Elsevier.

Project DEAL will also lead negotiations for nationwide licensing agreements with Springer Nature and Wiley.

The negotiations between Germany and Elsevier have now entered the second year. Late last year, more than 70 universities, institutes and public libraries cancelled contracts with Elsevier to 'improve their negotiating power'. Earlier this year, the institutions went several weeks without access to Elsevier's portfolio before the publisher restored access in February 'while good-faith discussions about a nationwide contract carry on'.

HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, is now using OCLC WorldShare Management Services as its library management system.

WorldShare Management Services (WMS) is the cloud-based library services platform that provides all of the applications needed to manage a library, including acquisitions, circulation, metadata, resource sharing, license management, and a discovery service for users. It also includes a range of reports that helps libraries better understand their activities and track key metrics over time.

HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht provides education and carries out applied research, working with organisations and institutions to find solutions to a wide variety of complex issues. The university's research generates knowledge and new insights both for the relevant professional field and for teaching activities.
