US Elsevier announces publication of nine new pharmaceutical science books - 11 Aug 2017

Elsevier, the information analytics business specialising in science and health, has announced the publication of From Artemisia annua L. to Artemisinins: The Discovery and Development of Artemisinins and Antimalarial Agents by Chinese Nobel laureate Youyou Tu. It is the first book that systematically introduces the origin and development of artemisinine and artemisinine-based drugs. One of the nine new pharmaceutical science books, From Artemisia annua L. to Artemisinins will be a valuable reference work for both researchers involved in the medical industry and scholars who are interested in undertaking innovative research.

From Artemisia annua L. to Artemisinins presents a full view of artemisinin including chemical structure, chemical properties, extracting mode, derivatives, chromogenic reaction, general pharmacological, and toxicology. It features a large amount of experimental data, such as the X-ray crystallography result—the first application reported in China in determining the absolute molecular configuration utilizing the scattering effects of oxygen atoms by X-ray diffraction technique.

Youyou Tu is a Chinese pharmaceutical chemist and educator. She is best known for discovering artemisinin (also known as Qinghaosu) and dihydroartemisinin, which saved millions of lives in the treatment of malaria. Her discovery of artemisinin is regarded as a significant breakthrough of tropical medicine in the 20th century and health improvement for people of tropical developing countries in South Asia, Africa, and South America.

The nine new pharmaceutical sciences titles are: From Artemisia annua L. to Artemisinins: The Discovery and Development of Artemisinins and Antimalarial Agents by Youyou Tu; Profiles of Drug Substances, Excipients, and Related Methodology, Volume 42, edited by Harry Brittain; Essentials of Chinese Materia Medica and Medical Formulas: New Century Traditional Chinese Medicine by Shengyan Xi and Yuewen Gong; Adverse Events and Oncotargeted Kinase Inhibitors by Giuseppe Tridente; Ion Channels Down Under, edited by Dominic Geraghty and Lachlan Rash; Nanotechnology-Based Approaches for Targeting and Delivery of Drugs and Genes, edited by Vijay Mishra, Prashant Kesharwani, Mohd Cairul Mohd Amin and Arun Iyer; A Comprehensive and Practical Guide to Clinical Trials, edited by Delva Shamley and Brenda Wright; An Introduction to Ethical, Safety and Intellectual Property Rights Issues in Biotechnology by Padma Nambisan; and A Paradigm Shift to Prevent and Treat Alzheimer's Disease: From Monotargeting Pharmaceuticals to Pleiotropic Plant Polyphenols by Howard Friel and Sally Frautschy.

In order to meet content needs in pharmaceutical sciences, Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify the gaps in coverage of the topics. Editorial teams strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new books will educate the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists, and provide critical foundational content for information professionals.

US Northern Alberta Institute of Technology opts for Ex Libris Alma® library services platform - 11 Aug 2017

Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, has announced that the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) has selected the Ex Libris Alma® library services platform to replace the institute's Voyager® integrated library system. NAIT is already using the Ex Libris Primo discovery and delivery solution, which will be tightly integrated with Alma to optimise the student and staff experience.

Among the functionality requirements that NAIT defined for its new library system was digital asset management that is part of the library services platform rather than a separate product. The Alma-Primo combination not only meets this requirement but also helps break down silos by enabling libraries to manage electronic, digital, and print assets within a single system and to provide access to all resources within a single interface.

The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is a polytechnic and applied sciences institute providing career programs in applied research, technical training, applied education, and learning designed to meet the demands of Alberta's technical and knowledge-based industries. NAIT offers approximately 140 credit programs leading to applied degrees, diplomas, and certificates.

US Copyright Clearance Center announces enhancements to RightFind - 11 Aug 2017

Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a global provider of content management, licensing, discovery and delivery solutions, has announced enhancements to RightFind, a content workflow solution that provides secure, cloud-based access to scientific, technical and medical (STM) information and other categories of high-value content.

With the new release, CCC focused on target areas of RightFind to better serve customers' interests, including instant document delivery for non-subscribed content, which enables users to view a document within seconds of placing an order—regardless of how many articles are being ordered or how the content is being made available—accelerating content workflow and collaboration; improved content in context, including the expansion of Altmetric data, giving users the ability to quickly identify the online attention—for example from social media—surrounding articles from their search results; a refreshed interface that displays re-use rights information in a variety of workflows; and a new Open Access icon that allows users to quickly identify Open Access content, including the growing base of articles available through CCC.

CCC's RightFind includes Open Access content from PubMed, DOAJ, BioMed Central, American Society for Microbiology and SpringerNature. With this update, granular Open Access coverage soon will expand to content from Taylor and Francis, Karger, American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics and other publishers.

RightFind maximises access to STM research databases, literature, corporate repositories and personal files, while at the same time reducing the cost of managing and hosting these information resources. The solution integrates seamlessly with CCC's Annual Copyright License to make copyright-compliant collaboration easier for users.

UK Emerald among first to join NISO Open Discovery Initiative - 11 Aug 2017

Academic publisher Emerald Publishing has become one of the first academic publishers to release a set of checklists detailing what it is doing to make the content it publishes easier to find.

The NISO Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) checklist helps publishers convey, in a standard format, exactly what they are doing to increase the discoverability of their content.

Emerald recently published checklists detailing what it does for each of its three main products: Books, Journals and Case Studies. These checklists include information about Abstracting and indexing (A&I), social media and metadata. Emerald is also working on a fourth checklist, covering its discovery-related activities for Open Access (OA) content, which it plans to release shortly.

The checklists are available online at http://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/support/discovery_resources.htm.
