US Elsevier donates Unified Data Model to The Pistoia Alliance, facilitating data sharing and accelerating research in the life sciences - 11 Oct 2017

Elsevier, the information analytics business specialising in science and health, has announced that it is donating its Unified Data Model (UDM) to The Pistoia Alliance, a global, not-for-profit alliance that works to lower barriers to innovation in life sciences R&D. The UDM is an XML file format originally developed by Elsevier to improve the upload of external data sets into its tools. It will now be developed and extended under the stewardship of The Pistoia Alliance, with the ultimate aim of publishing an open and freely available format for the storage and exchange of drug discovery data. The UDM will become a common model allowing data to be easily shared and integrated between parties. This will greatly accelerate drug discovery research and overcome a shared barrier to collaboration.

A lack of well-defined data definitions hampers research efforts and collaboration initiatives, within and between organisations. The complexity of integrating data between horizontal systems (e.g., in-house Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN)) and vertical systems (e.g., ELN used by a CRO or academic partner), also significantly adds to the cost of research projects. The Pistoia Alliance’s UDM steering committee, which includes Elsevier representatives, will address these issues by creating open data standards for experimental information about compound synthesis and biological testing. Currently, converting this type of reaction data for a single data source can take considerable time.

In 2013, Elsevier co-developed the UDM with Roche, which was integrating proprietary reaction information in Reaxys, Elsevier’s premier chemistry database. The UDM is based on a well-documented domain model which would provide a minimum information model for the implemented experiment types. No single organisation can create an industry standard by itself; the UDM model can instead be used a ‘starting point’ for informatics systems that are developed by both life sciences companies and software vendors, providing a standard platform for implementing experimental business rules and protocols.

The Pistoia Alliance, supported by Elsevier, will publish the first version of the extended UDM in Q1 2018. The Pistoia Alliance will then further develop the model in response to members’ feedback.

UK Springer Nature and UNSILO partner to release new comprehensive set of article metadata - 11 Oct 2017

Springer Nature and text analytics company UNSILO have released a new comprehensive set of article metadata. The new metadata includes keywords for every article, and for articles where no editorial keywords exist, the UNSILO Text Intelligence platform has analysed the full text and selected a set of descriptive Key Concepts.

Traditionally, the content of an academic article has been summarized in three key formats that match the traditional modes of knowledge acquisition and discovery: the abstract, the title, and the editor’s keywords. The importance of these traditional formats is undisputed, but the rise of cross-domain innovation and the evolving needs of researchers place new demands on the ability of these systems to explain the relevance of an article in a particular context.

Springer Nature has partnered with UNSILO to develop research tools that understand and build representations of academic articles for these emerging use cases. The key objective is to help researchers spend more time on the most relevant articles, and less time skimming through the ocean of articles that contain the right words, but make no contribution to their research topic.

UK The SAGE Encyclopedia of Abnormal and Clinical Psychology presents new and foundational concepts about the field - 11 Oct 2017

Academic publisher SAGE Publishing has announced the publication of The SAGE Encyclopedia of Abnormal and Clinical Psychology, providing students, scholars, and practitioners an introduction to the full scope of the field. The new 7-volume resource contains more than 1,400 signed articles that discuss essential approaches and theories, numerous mental health disorders, assessment tools and psychotherapeutic interventions, and the social, legal, and cultural foundations that have caused controversy in abnormal and clinical psychology.

The set is geared toward undergraduate students, graduate students pursuing a degree in clinical psychology or related fields, people who want to gain straightforward information about the field, and established scholars and practitioners who want to learn about topics outside their specific areas of expertise.

The encyclopedia has a Reader’s Guide with 25 topical categories, including anxiety disorders, historical context, psychological constructs, theories and theoretical frameworks, and treatment, therapeutic approaches, and relevant constructs.

US ProQuest enhances Ebook Central platform user experience - 11 Oct 2017

ProQuest has again teamed with students and other researchers to make the experience of using the Ebook Central® platform more efficient, effective and valuable. The popular ebook platform has enhanced its book detail pages to boost usability with simplified workflows, more chapter-level capabilities, and improved file naming conventions that make it easy to organise downloaded resources.

Libraries that offer Ebook Central will deliver an enriched experience to their users. For example, users can now connect to the exact content that is important to research or classwork—at both the chapter and subchapter level—allowing them to make better use of the ebooks available on the platform. The book detail pages feature detailed availability, descriptive and bibliographic information. Tables of contents can be expanded to quickly view chapter subsections and zero in on the section of the ebook needed.

Once users find the chapter or subsection they need, they can read online or download a DRM-free file using a new streamlined login process. New automatic file naming conventions mirror book and chapter titles and help users keep track of the content that they download.
