US Elsevier announces publication of seven new biomedical research and engineering titles - 13 Dec 2017

Elsevier, the information analytics business specialising in science and health, has announced the publication of the most reputable and easily searchable cardiovascular-focused basic and translational reference work for students, researchers, clinicians and teaching faculty across the biomedical and medical sciences. Encyclopedia of Cardiovascular Research and Medicine offers more than 200 articles covering every aspect of the field, as well as fully annotated figures, abundant colour illustrations and links to supplementary datasets and references. Elsevier also announced publication of six additional biomedical research and engineering titles.

An unparalleled, one-stop resource, the encyclopedia includes reliable foundational content on genetics, cancer, immunology, cell biology and molecular biology. It offers readers a broad, interdisciplinary overview of the concepts in cardiovascular research and medicine with applications across biomedical research. Editors-in-Chief Douglas B. Sawyer and Ramachandran S. Vasan chose authors from an international board of leading scholars, rendering the text trustworthy, contemporary and representative of the global scientific expertise in these domains.

The seven new biomedical research and engineering titles are: Encyclopedia of Cardiovascular Research and Medicine, edited by Douglas B. Sawyer and Ramachandran S. Vasan; Genetics of Bone Biology and Skeletal Disease, Second Edition, edited by Rajesh V. Thakker, Michael P. Whyte, John A. Eisman and Takashi Igarashi; Manual of Chronic Total Occlusion Interventions: A Step-by-Step Approach, Second Edition by Emmanouil Brilakis; Heart Failure in the Child and Young Adult: From Bench to Bedside, edited by John Jefferies, Anthony Chang, Joseph Rossano, Robert Shaddy and Jeffrey Towbin; Genomic and Precision Medicine: Cardiovascular Disease, Third Edition, edited by Geoffrey S. Ginsburg and Huntington F. Willard; Molecular Pathology: The Molecular Basis of Human Disease, Second Edition, edited by William B. Coleman and Gregory J. Tsongalis; and Omics Technologies and Bio-engineering: Towards Improving Quality of Life, edited by Debmalya Barh and Vasco Azevedo.

In order to meet content needs in biomedical research and engineering, Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify the gaps in coverage of the topics. Editorial teams strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new books will educate the next generation of biomedical researchers and engineers, and provide critical foundational content for information professionals.

US American Physiological Society transfers its journals to new online platform - 13 Dec 2017

The American Physiological Society (APS) has announced the transfer of its journals to a new online platform, to provide journal readers and authors with an upgraded user experience. The move transfers 13 APS physiology research journals to Atypon's Literatum online publishing platform after more than 20 years with its previous and original online journal host.

The new custom site was designed by the Atypon Design Studio using Atypon's UX 3.0 design language and implementation system for modern scholarly websites that prioritises readers' and authors' needs.

Among the state-of-the-art features and functionality users can expect from the new website: the same experience on every type of device; convenient side-by-side full-text reading that places figures and references adjacent to related text; interactive PDFs with image enlargement, reference citation links and quicker downloads ('PDF Plus'); multimedia, including video abstracts, podcasts and social media, played within the article; fast, precise search and discovery across all journals; enhanced and openly viewable article-level usage statistics (Altmetrics); a single user login with APS member credentials for the entire site; fast, regular delivery of new features; and many other features designed to enhance the author and reader experience.

Journals hosted on Literatum are the American Journal of Physiology (AJP), which will have been continuously published for 120 years in 2018 (composed of AJP-Cell Physiology; AJP-Endocrinology and Metabolism; AJP-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology; AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology; AJP-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology; AJP-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology; AJP-Renal Physiology); Journal of Applied Physiology; Journal of Neurophysiology; Physiological Genomics; Physiology; Physiological Reviews; and Advances in Physiology Education. Comprehensive Physiology and Physiological Reports (the open access journal collaboration of APS and the Physiological Society) will move to Atypon's Literatum platform in early 2018 under the aegis of Wiley, which publishes those two journals on APS' behalf.
