US Wiley and OhioLINK partner to lower cost of course materials in the state of Ohio - 09 Mar 2018

Publisher John Wiley and Sons, Inc. and OhioLINK, a consortium of 91 Ohio college and university libraries, have announced a new partnership that will reduce the cost of textbooks for students in the state of Ohio. This collaboration around Inclusive Access is part of Affordable Learning Ohio and will provide participating students with digital course materials on the first day of class, at savings upward of 40%. The program will increase the affordability of course materials for 450,000 students across the state of Ohio.

The Inclusive Access program provides students with instant access to WileyPLUS courseware and eTextbooks through their learning management system. The program will provide day-one access to the required course materials with students benefiting from the 40% saving. To meet this commitment to Ohio students, Wiley worked closely with OhioLINK and key partners of digital materials to fulfill WileyPLUS courseware and eTextbooks online and through campus retailers.

120 academic libraries are full members of OhioLINK. These libraries are distributed among 92 different Ohio colleges and universities. OhioLINK membership includes the State Library of Ohio, 16 public university libraries, 51 independent college libraries, 23 two-year college libraries, 16 regional campus libraries, 8 law school libraries and 5 medical school libraries.

US Ethan Eisner to succeed Samuel Hardman as President of Reed Tech - 09 Mar 2018

Information-based solutions and services provider Reed Tech has announced the promotion of Ethan Eisner to President. He officially assumed responsibility on March 1. He succeeds Samuel Hardman who retired after nearly 30 years of loyal service, 17 as President, and has agreed to continue to serve as a Strategic Consultant to Reed Tech.

Eisner's career with the company spans almost 15 years. Prior to this role, he served as Vice President & Managing Director for Reed Tech, successfully leading the Global Commercial Markets business, and before that leading the U.S. Corporate Legal & Compliance business of LexisNexis. He also led the LexisNexis Enterprise Solutions business focused on serving corporate information-driven professionals.

Prior to joining LexisNexis, Eisner held a variety of senior leadership roles, including at Worknowledge, a training solutions company he helped found; The Franklin Mint, running the ecommerce and catalogue businesses; and the strategy consulting firm Bain & Company.

Eisner currently serves on the Board of Directors of Connectiv/SIIA where he has previously held the position of Chairman.

UK LBF International Excellence Awards 2018 shortlist revealed - 09 Mar 2018

The shortlist for The London Book Fair International Excellence Awards 2018 has been announced, with Brazil leading the way with five nominations, closely followed by USA with four, and a record-high 27 countries represented overall.

The awards, which are held in partnership with the UK Publishers Association (PA) and sponsored by Hytex, celebrate excellence in seventeen categories, including international publishing, bookselling, academic and scholarly publishing, children's publishing, literary translation and digital innovation. In each award category, the judging panel comprised of experts in that sector.

The first-ever Audiobook Publisher Award will see a battle between KaihShu Story Media & Culture Co (China), Penguin Random House (USA) and Ubook.com (Brazil). Biblo Tyen (Norway), Dokk1 (Denmark), National Library of Latvia (Lativia) and So Paulo Library (Brazil) will all hope to take home the crown for the new Library of the Year Award.

Retailers from across the world are nominated for the Bookstore of the Year Award, sponsored by Gardners, with Carturesti (Romania), Timbooktoo (Gambia) and The Uppsala English Bookshop (Sweden) all shortlisted.

Brazil (5), USA (4), Canada (2), Australia (2), Poland (2) and the MF Baltics countries Lithuania (5), Latvia (5) and Estonia (3) all received multiple entries. Gambia is represented for the first time in the award's five-year history, for Bookstore of the Year, sponsored by Gardners.

The winners of several other Awards will also be presented on the night including: The Simon Master's Chairman Award, The Market Focus Baltics Cultural and Literary Initiative Award, The Association for Publishing Education (APE) Student Awards and The LBF Trailblazer Awards.

The London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award will also be presented at the ceremony.

The LBF International Excellence Awards ceremony is an invitation-only event, and takes place on April 10, 2018 in The Conference Centre, Olympia, London.

US Two SAGE Publishing journals win 2018 PROSE Awards - 09 Mar 2018

Academic publisher SAGE Publishing has announced that two of its journals were recently announced as winners of the 2018 PROSE Awards, the publishing industry's highest honours for professional and scholarly works presented by the Association of American Publishers (AAP). Communication & Sport (C&S), published in association with the International Association for Communication and Sport, was honoured as the Best New Journal in Social Sciences, and the JDR Clinical & Translational Research (JDR CTR), published in partnership with the International and American Associations for Dental Research, was awarded Best New Journal in Biological and Life Sciences.

Dedicated to the fields of communication and media studies, C&S features research about the increasing social and cultural impacts of sport. C&S is a media-centric journal and utilises innovations in mixed media, including original podcasts highlighting audio interviews with journal contributors, social media engagement, and field mobilisation.

The JDR CTR claims to be the only international journal that publishes studies on a variety of topics using a broad range of methodologies in clinical and translational research in oral health. It publishes content that focuses on research with an immediate potential to affect clinical and health services-related outcomes.

This year, the PROSE Awards received more than 550 books, journals and eProducts for consideration in 51 subject categories within five areas of excellence: Biological and Life Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences & Mathematics, Reference Works, and Social Sciences.

UK Institution of Engineering and Technology launches new, gold open access engineering journal - IET Smart Grid - 09 Mar 2018

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has launched a new, gold open access engineering journal - IET Smart Grid. The new journal aims to disseminate cutting-edge research results spanning multiple disciplines including: Power Electronics, Power and Energy, Control, Communications, and Computing Sciences. Professor H. Vincent Poor, Princeton University, USA, and Dr. Hongjian Sun, University of Durham, UK, serve as Editors-in-Chief of the journal.

IET Smart Grid will publish original research findings and latest perspectives from research projects relevant to smart grid technologies and their applications in other domains. This new open access journal will pay special attention to smart grid management and ICT technologies for power systems including communications and networking, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cyber-physical security and architectures for power systems.

IET Smart Grid, which has launched a call for papers, will publish its first issue in April 2018. The journal is the latest addition to a growing collection of fully open access journals in the IET Open programme, which showcases the best in engineering science. Covering the latest research topics, the IET's fully open access journals offer researchers a place to publish their most innovative and novel work and make it accessible to anyone wishing to read it, cite it and re-use it.

The journal will be available on the IET's Digital Library and IEEE XPlore with four issues per year. The Editors-in-Chief are inviting submissions from prospective authors for forthcoming issues.

UK Emerald wins ProQuest IPG 2018 Academic & Professional Publisher of the Year Award - 09 Mar 2018

Academic publisher Emerald Publishing has been awarded the Academic & Professional Publisher of the Year Award at the 2018 IPG Independent Publishing Awards. Launched in 2007 and run by the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG), the Independent Publishing Awards are the UK's biggest annual celebration of independent publishing. The awards reward outstanding achievement in different sectors and aspects of publishing.

This was the first time that Emerald Publishing had entered the IPG Awards. The judges praised Emerald for its achievements during their 50th anniversary last year. These included: their universally well-received rebrand; the success of the books publishing programme; the enhancements to the EmeraldInsight.com research platform; and the respective launches of an Author Hub and their Open Access programme Emerald Reach.

The IPG Academic & Professional Publisher of the Year award comes hot on the heels of a coveted PROSE award for The Century of Science: The Global Triumph of the Research University edited by Justin J. W. Powell David P. Baker and Frank Fernandez and published by Emerald.
