German Springer Nature to publish the Canadian Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education - 13 Apr 2018

The Canadian Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (CJSMTE), one of the leading academic journals covering the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education has now become part of Springer's prestigious education portfolio. CJSMTE is administered by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto and was previously published by Taylor and Francis. Now in its eighteenth year of publication the journal explores STEM research in both English and French from a Canadian and international perspective. Starting in May 2018 the journal will be published by Springer Nature.

In four issues per year, CJSMTE publishes original articles including research investigations using experimental, qualitative, ethnographic, historical, philosophical, or case study approaches. Researchers can also submit critical reviews of the literature, policy perspectives and position papers to the journal.

The editorial board is led by Professor John Wallace of the University of Toronto as Editor-in-Chief. These experts ensure that this subscription journal with open access options provides a broad spectrum of scholarly contributions across wide-ranging disciplines to researchers in the STEM education community.

US AAAS and Science & Technology Australia sign MoU to enhance the role of STEM on the global stage - 13 Apr 2018

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has signed a memorandum of understanding with Australia's leading scientific organisation, pledging to foster collaborations to enhance the role of science, technology, engineering and mathematics on the global stage.

The agreement stems from a meeting last spring between representatives of Science & Technology Australia and leaders of AAAS in Washington, D.C., where both sides explored pursuing opportunities of shared interests, including cooperative efforts to address international science policy issues.

The agreement paves the way for joint activities, exchanges and collaborative initiatives to bring the Australian and U.S. STEM sectors together.

US New eLibrary Redesign gives Novice researchers a jump-start - 13 Apr 2018

Novice researchers now have a better way to begin a research project and quickly find reliable information to support their themes and ideas. The easy-to-use eLibrary® online resource has a new look and feel that helps K-12 and other students start and successfully complete assignments.

One of the resources selected for state-wide support of California's 10,000 schools and 6.2 million students, the eLibrary solution features a rich collection of full-text, editorially-created content on thousands of research topics that span more than 150 subject areas - people, places, historical events, current events, broad curricular themes and more. The new eLibrary interface responds to students' demands for visual-appeal and intuitive design. Its Research Topics pages are easy to find and display the most common assignments and subjects up front, simplifying user workflows. The site's responsive design is optimised for any screen, including mobile. And it is now available on the ProQuest® platform so users can cross-search its material with their institution's other ProQuest content, improving discovery.

The new eLibrary design is based on extensive user research that revealed the most profound challenges for novice researchers. For example, selecting a topic was identified as the most stressful research-related task. The eLibrary platform addresses that challenge by guiding users to interesting and approved topics. Content is curated by editorial specialists for appropriateness and reliability. Users are pointed to vetted sources like newspapers, magazines, transcripts, reference books, images, maps, websites and videos.

eLibrary includes features such as Google Classroom and Google Drive integration and Lexile® reading levels, and it aligns to curriculum standards. Features like text-to-speech and language translation ensure accessibility for researchers from all backgrounds.

US Cambridge University Press partners with Code Ocean to increase transparency and code executability - 13 Apr 2018

Academic publisher Cambridge University Press (the Press) has partnered with Code Ocean, a platform that enables authors of articles in Press journals to publish and share code associated with their research and readers to view and run that code from within articles.

Code Ocean, a computational reproducibility platform, enables authors to openly publish their code on the platform, thereby making it free for others to access, download and share. Sharing the code and data underlying research is an important step in demonstrating that the results presented in research articles can be reproduced. Users can execute the code and view the results without having to install anything on their personal computer. They can even modify the code to see how the results change.

Political Science Research & Methods (PSRM) is the first Press journal adopting Code Ocean, an extension of the journal's existing policy that requires authors to deposit data necessary to reproduce the results in their articles.

Over the next few months, Code Ocean and the Press will work towards the integration of Code Ocean into the submission workflow of journals across various disciplines where code and data are used. In this integrated workflow, authors will be asked if there is code associated with the article during the submission process; those who select yes will be prompted to upload their code to Code Ocean. On publication, the compute capsule containing the code, data, and computational environment in Code Ocean will link to the related article on Cambridge Core. A Code Ocean widget visible on the article page will enable readers to view and run the code without leaving Cambridge Core.

Authors publishing with the Press are responsible for supplying and maintaining accurate records of data associated with their submitted manuscript. Authors can use Code Ocean for code and data, simulations, analysis, and algorithms. Due to the use of container technologies, the execution of that code is agnostic across different programming languages, versions, and operating systems.

US Agreement between EBSCO Information Services and Infoestratégica Latina to offer libraries choice and support for FOLIO Systems - 13 Apr 2018

A new relationship between EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and Infoestratégica Latina is designed to ensure that libraries adopting the FOLIO Library Services Platform (LSP) will be able to rely on hosting and services support. The agreement secures Infoestrategica's pledge to provide FOLIO application and support services backed by EBSCO hosting technology and data services.

Infoestratégica Latina, located in Mexico City and Bogota, is one of the biggest general library service vendors in Latin America. Infoestratégica Latina will work closely with EBSCO to provide support for their Latin American libraries using FOLIO as their library services platform.

EBSCO has supported FOLIO with funding, developers and project management as well as provided funding for Koha open source development. EBSCO will be providing hosting services and advanced software support as well as a complement of data integration services for libraries adopting the FOLIO LSP.

Infoestratégica Latina and EBSCO will be working together and with the FOLIO community to support the first libraries going live with FOLIO in 2019.

Since being announced in June 2016, FOLIO has formed a community and librarians and developers have joined special interest groups that are actively creating an open source LSP that supports traditional resource management functionality that can be extended into emerging areas. FOLIO is being designed to be flexible to allow librarians to select the applications that best align with their workflow needs.
