Knovel forms publishing partnership with Synapse Information Resources - 25 Aug 2006
Web-based information services provider Knovel Corporation, US, has announced a partnership with Synapse Information Resources, Inc., US, to make available a wide range of premium chemical and chemical engineering content, on an interactive platform. Synapse Information Resources provides the Chemical Industry with timely, integrated access to thousands of chemical manufacturers and information on a range of chemicals. Under the deal, reference handbooks essential for research and development in the Food Science, Pharmaceutical, and Chemical Manufacturing industries will be added to Knovel Interactive Library and enhanced for real-life application with next-generation technology. The agreement is one of several publishing partnerships Knovel has concluded in the recent months. Synapse joins other Sci-Tech publishers such as McGraw Hill, John Wiley & Sons, Elsevier, Springer and World Scientific among others. Knovel offers specialised collection of interactive analysis tools that calculate data, resolve equations, sort and export tabular data, and extract data from traditionally static graphs, charts and tables. By bringing Synapse into Knovel's existing chemistry and chemical engineering reference collection, the company seeks to provide its customers with richer solutions, offering a combination of up-to-the-minute content and analysis tools.
Wiley partners with Science Museum to publish new series on technology and trends - 25 Aug 2006
Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Ltd., US, has signed a multi-year agreement with the Science Museum in London to publish a new series of books covering technology trends. Three titles in the series are scheduled for release in October 2007, and a minimum of 15 books will be published over the course of the agreement. The series, sub-branded with the Dana Centre, a popular extension of the Science Museum, is projected to expand Wiley's content offerings into a new genre of technology topics. Also, it is the first series of its kind for the Science Museum. Written by leading technology journalists and experts in the UK, the books will examine technology-related news stories from across the globe. A joint editorial steering committee from Wiley and the Science Museum will oversee titles on topics such as robot-assisted heart surgery and nanotech housing materials. ScienceDirect redesigns services with new functionalities - 25 Aug 2006
STM information resource ScienceDirect, part of Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced the availability of various new features. The move, to be implemented over the next few years, is aimed to further improve researcher productivity by making full-text content quicker and easier to access. The new features include a redesigned user interface, streamlined browsing and searching and advanced personalisation capabilities. The features have reportedly received positive response from users as a result of several time saving improvements - including reduced search times of up to 80 percent. The changes are being shaped by extensive user testing and feedback to ensure that the system remains as closely aligned to the needs of its users as possible. The new improved browsing feature makes it easier for users to browse through all the content it makes available. Enhancements include the ability to browse by journal title or subject directly from the homepage; the integration of related journal and book content in one browse area; and the ability to browse through content from different subject areas at the same time. Every page in ScienceDirect now features a 'Quick Search' tool bar with the option to search, or refine a search, by title, author, volume, issue, page, keyword and year. In addition, ScienceDirect has enhanced its personalisation capabilities so that researchers no longer have to spend time performing the same steps over and over again in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in their field of study.
NASI journals now available online - 25 Aug 2006
The National Academy Of Sciences, India (NASI) has announced the online availability of three of its journals, immediately on publication. The move is part of an effort to develop scientific temperament among the masses. The journals - Proceedings of the NASI (section A-Physical Sciences), Proceedings of the NASI (section B-Biological Sciences) and National Academy Science Letters-can be accessed on the website of Digital Library Of India (DLI) at www.new.dli.ernet.in. While current issues of the journals will be available on the NASI site, the DLI site will contain information from the date of its publication. Founded in 1930, the National Academy of Sciences is the oldest Science Academy of the country. The Academy aims to provide a national forum for the publication of research work carried out by Indian scientists and to provide opportunities for exchange of views among them.
David L. Calhoun appointed Chairman and CEO of VNU - 25 Aug 2006
Information and media firm VNU Group B.V., Netherlands, has announced that David L. Calhoun has been named Chairman of the Executive Board and Chief Executive Officer of VNU by the company's Supervisory Board. He succeeds Rob Ruijter, who served as interim CEO since June 13. Ruijter will continue as the company's Chief Financial Officer. Prior to this, Mr. Calhoun served General Electric Company as Vice Chairman and President and Chief Executive Officer, GE Infrastructure, where he was responsible for GE's Aviation, Energy, Oil and Gas, Transportation and Water units. The company's Supervisory Board had named Mr. Ruijter as the company's interim CEO following the final annual meeting in June. Elsevier MDL's Dr. Heritage joins Indiana University Advisory Board - 25 Aug 2006
Informatics solutions provider Elsevier MDL, US, has announced that the company's Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Trevor Heritage, has joined the Science Informatics Advisory Board (SIAB) at the Indiana University School of Informatics. Dr. Heritage is among 12 leaders from the business, research and industry fields in science and discovery informatics. SIAB members advise the directors of the School's graduate programmes in bioinformatics, chemical informatics and laboratory informatics at its Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campuses. A former senior vice president at Tripos, Inc., Dr. Heritage joined the Elsevier MDL management team in 2005. He brings extensive scientific and pharmaceutical research experience to the SIAB as well as knowledge of biopharma workflows and computational modelling.
