US Elsevier and American Chemical Society file second lawsuit against ResearchGate for copyright infringement - 10 Oct 2018

Elsevier and the American Chemical Society (ACS) have filed a second lawsuit against ResearchGate, alleging mass copyright infringement.

Last year, the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers, a group representing more than 140 publishers, wrote to ResearchGate, a popular social networking site for researchers, expressing concerns over the site's article-sharing practices. Dissatisfied with the response, the concerned parties created a new a group, known as the Coalition for Responsible Sharing.

The ACS and Elsevier, both of whom are members of the new group, filed a suit against ResearchGate last October in Berlin - where the site is based - which is still awaiting a decision. ResearchGate is a private company that launched in 2008 and has been funded by the likes of the Wellcome Trust, Goldman Sachs and Bill Gates.

The new lawsuit, filed in a Maryland court on October 2, comes amid concerns at the lack of action from ResearchGate to address the publishers' concerns.

James Milne, senior vice president at ACS and spokesperson for the coalition, estimates that ResearchGate still illicitly hosts around 4 million paywalled articles. A 2017 study found that 201 out of 500 randomly picked papers on ResearchGate breached copyright. ResearchGate declined to comment.

ResearchGate has refused to implement a user-friendly technical solution, which would inform authors whether they have the rights to upload a paper during submission.

As a result, over the last year, all 15 members of the coalition have collectively sent ResearchGate hundreds of thousands of takedown notices to remove papers on the site that infringe copyright. But that is only a short term solution, because newly published papers also continue to be added to the platform.

The new lawsuit became necessary because the verdict of the German one probably would not be admissible in the US, because the US contains the largest ResearchGate user base.

Last year, the ACS won another legal battle against Sci-Hub, a pirate site that provides researchers free access to millions of paywalled papers. The ACS filed suit last June, alleging copyright infringement, trademark counterfeiting and trademark infringement.

Italy LIUC - Università Cattaneo opts to move to Ex Libris Alma, Primo, and Leganto solutions - 10 Oct 2018

Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, has announced that Italy's LIUC - Università Cattaneo will be moving to the Ex Libris Alma® library services platform, Primo® discovery and delivery solution, and Leganto™ course reading list solution.

Because of the diversity of the technological solutions currently in place at LIUC, information has accumulated in silos and problems have developed with the management of e resources and the provision of access to them.

With the move to the Ex Libris solutions, LIUC will benefit from tight integration between discovery, resource management, and resource lists, which are all based on the Ex Libris cloud platform. The effective unified management of both print resources and the university's increasing collection of e resources will support a large, rapidly growing community of users in Italy.

UK Dove Medical Press and The Charlesworth Group partner to integrate WeChat into its manuscript submission system - 10 Oct 2018

Dove Medical Press Ltd., a division of Taylor & Francis, has partnered with The Charlesworth Group to integrate its manuscript submission system into Charlesworth's WeChat Gateway platform. The use of WeChat within the scientific community in China continues to grow and has over-taken email as the preferred primary communication channel for China-based academic authors.

By integrating their submission system directly into Charlesworth's Gateway, Dove can now support its China-based academic authors 24/7.

The 'Gateway' is Charlesworth's proprietary technology platform. It acts as a hub, receiving manuscript status data via API from Dove's manuscript submission system and then personalising that data and transmitting it to Dove's WeChat account. The platform's statistics provide real-time data on the number and growth of Dove Medical's WeChat followers. It also reports on followers' engagement with Dove's WeChat marketing content.

The integration allows Dove to continually engage with their authors and enhance their experience by providing paper status notifications directly to authors' phones via the Gateway's chatbot. The use of the chatbot ensures an efficient service, giving responses to the most commonly asked author queries in a matter of seconds.

UK Seven publisher partners sign up to Kudos’ Shareable PDF for author sharing - 10 Oct 2018

Kudos, a platform for managing research dissemination, has announced that seven more publisher partners have signed up to switch on the Shareable PDF (S-PDF) feature and enable their authors to use Kudos for managing and evaluating PDF-based sharing.

S-PDF makes it easy for researchers to create and share plain language summaries of their work, encapsulated in PDFs that can be uploaded to PDF-based sharing services. The service has been widely adopted by authors as well as publishers, with over 5,000 authors having shared S-PDFs since launch. They benefit from S-PDF's ability to 'report back' on the readership of work in otherwise closed websites, enabling the discovery value of these sites to be compared on a like-for-like basis with other online and offline sharing efforts, via Kudos' unique dissemination management service.

The most recent publishers to sign up are: Annals of Saudi Medicine; ASTM International; BMJ; Edinburgh University Press; Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group (JNSPG); and Liverpool University Press.

S-PDFs link readers through to full text on publisher websites, and dovetail with other initiatives designed to help researchers improve copyright-compliant visibility for their work on scholarly collaboration networks and via other PDF-based sharing platforms and media.

The Kudos shareable PDF is now available for any publisher who wishes to activate this feature, whether a current Kudos customer or not.
