UK ConTech 2018 organisers Info International announce the second Challenges in the Scholarly Publishing Cycle conference - 11 Oct 2018

Info International is once again partnering with Research Information on the second Challenges in the Scholarly Publishing Cycle (CISPC) conference taking place on December 3, 2018. Info International also organises ConTech 2018 and delegates can save when they book to attend both conferences.

CISPC is a one-day conference that will take place at London Art House and will use the results of an industry survey (Challenges in Scholarly Publishing 2018) as the starting point for a day of interactive workshops - with each delegate attending focused sessions on publisher, librarian and academic perspectives.

Delegates will have a unique opportunity to learn from other stakeholder groups and take away practical, strategic and operational action points back to their own institution.

All delegates will receive a copy of the full survey results on the day, as well as the opportunity to view the results online a few days before the event to help prepare.

The event is hosted by Research Information, and chaired by editor Tim Gillett. Europa Science (publisher of Research Information) managing director Warren Clark will deliver the opening presentation, reviewing the results of the 2018 survey.

The chairs for the three discussions are: Researcher Focus - Alastair Horne, doctoral researcher, Bath Spa University and the British Library; Publisher Focus - Audrey McCulloch, chief executive officer, ALPSP; Librarian Focus - Helen Blanchett, scholarly communications subject specialist, JISC.

The world of publishing has been forged from two great waves of technology - the invention of the printing press and the creation of the internet. Those who attend ConTech 2018 and CISPC 2018 will get to grips with the next, third wave of technology that is already revolutionising the world of publishing.

A new generation of intelligent technology is transforming publishing and the world of digital content. Driven by data science and artificial intelligence, new tools are making publishers and content providers smarter, faster and more attuned to the needs of their users.

ConTech 2018 is an event for content people - from publishers to content and information managers who want to understand how data-driven content will impact their organisations, operations and the content they create, deliver and consume.

ConTech 2018 takes place at Chelsea Harbour Hotel, London from November 29 - 30, 2018. https://contechlive.com/

US Clarivate Analytics data powers annual Reuters’ ranking of the world’s most innovative universities - 11 Oct 2018

Reuters has released its fourth annual ranking of the world’s most innovative universities, compiled in partnership with Clarivate Analytics. The fourth annual list is based on empirical data including patent filings from Derwent Innovation and research paper citations from the Web of Science to identify the educational institutions most successful in advancing science, inventing new technologies, and powering new markets and industries.

North American universities continue to dominate the Reuters' ranking with 48 universities featuring in the top 100 - 46 in the USA and two from Canada. Once again, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University take the top three spots. Contributing to Stanford's solid foothold at number one is a steady stream of patents and research which are frequently cited by other academics and industrial firms around the world. Recent Stanford research highlights include several developments in the field of artificial intelligence, including a next generation of camera systems to guide self-driving cars and simulators that can predict potential drug interactions before new pharmaceuticals are ever tested on humans.

European universities take 27 places on the list, the highest ranked of which is Belgium's KU Leuven ranked #7, followed by Imperial College London (#8). Asia follows closely, with 23 universities, headed by Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), at #11 and Pohang University of Science & Technology (POSTECH) at #13.

Germany and Japan are tied for second best-performing country, with nine universities each. South Korea has eight universities on the list; China, France and the United Kingdom each have 5; Switzerland has 3; Belgium, Canada, Israel and the Netherlands have 2, and Denmark and Singapore each have 1. Regionally, Asia has 23 institutions on the list, the Middle East has two. There are no universities in the top 100 located in Africa, South America or Oceania.

The University of Manchester, UK showed the biggest improvement in rank surging 27 places in comparison to its showing in 2017. One explanation for this rapid rise is the University's world-leading research on graphene. The University is home to the UK's National Graphene Institute, as well as graphene pioneers and 2010 Nobel Prize recipients in Physics Sir Andre Geim and Sir Konstantin Novoselov. Patents relating to graphene account for about a quarter of all filings from the University over the six-year period surveyed (2011 - 2016).

Clarivate Analytics' highly curated datasets provide the most trusted and unique data to make these rankings possible. These information and research analytics tools are relied upon by more than 20 million users and have been selected by the world's most influential ranking organisations such as the Academic Ranking of the World Universities (also known as Shanghai Rankings), CWTS Leiden Ranking, U.S. News Global University Rankings, U-Multirank European Ranking, University Ranking by Academic Performance – URAP (Turkey), I-UGR Rankings (Spain), National Taiwan University Rankings, among many others.

Web of Science is the largest publisher-neutral citation index, powering global discovery and citation analytics across the sciences, social sciences and art & humanities. With more than 1.4 billion cited references going back to 1900 and millions of users per day-from top government and academic institutions and research-intensive corporations-the Web of Science citation network serves as the foundation for the Journal Impact Factor, InCites, and other powerful and trusted citation-impact metrics. Clarivate Analytics attaches special significance to the quality of data indexed in the Web of Science.

US NASA piloting use of UpToDate from Wolters Kluwer on board the International Space Station for clinical decision support in space - 11 Oct 2018

Wolters Kluwer Health has announced that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is piloting the use of UpToDate® on board the International Space Station (ISS).

UpToDate is an evidence-based clinical decision support resource that equips clinicians with the most current medical information, including expert-authored recommendations that can be used at the point of care. Since internet connectivity is limited aboard the ISS, NASA is using UpToDate MobileComplete™ to enable access to UpToDate content without continuous internet access. With all UpToDate content downloaded locally to an iPad, astronauts have seamless offline access to the latest comprehensive clinical content that spans more than 11,000 clinical topics.

On earth, the offline accessibility of UpToDate MobileComplete is an important clinical asset in rural regions with limited internet connectivity as well as in disaster zones. With hurricane season in full swing, UpToDate MobileComplete can be an invaluable resource when regions temporarily lose power and internet.

Approximately 90 percent of academic medical centers in the US and more than 36,500 hospitals and institutions worldwide trust UpToDate to improve patient care. It continues to be the only clinical decision support resource associated with shortened patient stays and saving lives.
