UK ConTech 2018 offering two student bursaries to rising stars of the information world - 08 Nov 2018

Applications are coming in from students across the world who want to attend ConTech 2018 later this month in London, UK, as part of the bursary programme. The world of intelligent content is revolutionising the creation, dissemination and consumption of information. ConTech has a mission to become the go to event for meeting, sharing and learning about the implications and opportunities that face the worlds of information and premium content, this year and for many more to come.

A critical part of this revolution will be the roles played by new entrants into the information profession, hence the focus on attracting undergraduate or post graduate students to participate. Interested parties may visit to find out more or to see how to apply.

To learn more about other parts of the ConTech mission have a look at a discussion between ConTech 2018 chairs Sam Herbert, of 67Bricks, and Vincent Cassidy, of the IET. They explore some of the key issues for publishers looking to become more data-driven in the run up to this year's event.

ConTech 2018 takes place at Chelsea Harbour Hotel, London from November 29-30, 2018.

US Elsevier to integrate the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology into Via Oncology - 08 Nov 2018

Elsevier, the information analytics business specialising in science and health, will integrate the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®) and utilise the NCCN Chemotherapy Order Templates (NCCN Templates®) as a reference into Via Oncology's Via Portal to provide clinical decision support at point of care and NCCN Guidelines® concordance reporting. The NCCN Guidelines will also be used as a reference resource for developing and maintaining the Via Pathways.

Beginning in 2019, the Via Portal will be enhanced to include drugs and biologics recommendations from the NCCN Guidelines for use when providers are going off pathway. The Via Portal will ultimately include 34 NCCN Guidelines support for all Via Pathways diseases for Medical Oncology.

The NCCN Guidelines are the recognised standard for clinical and policy decisions in cancer care and are the most thorough and most frequently updated clinical practice guidelines available in any area of medicine. Derived directly from the NCCN Guidelines, the NCCN Templates include chemotherapy and immunotherapy regimens with literature support, supportive care agents, monitoring parameters and safety instructions. The goal of the NCCN Templates is to enhance patient safety by empowering healthcare providers to standardise patient care, reduce medical errors, and anticipate and manage adverse events.

Via Oncology helps cancer centers demonstrate the value of their care to patients, referring physicians and payers, by developing and implementing clinical pathways in collaboration with its network of more than 2,000 US cancer care providers. Via Oncology's Via Pathways includes evidence-based proprietary content developed by committees composed of leading oncologists that forms the basis of clinical algorithms covering 95 percent of cancer types treated in the US.

The Via Pathways are deployed to physicians and their staff at the point of care through the Via Portal, a patient-specific decision support tool that is integrated with the electronic medical record and provides seamless measurement of adherence. Via Pathways addresses more than 2,000 unique patient presentations, including expert-defined clinical algorithms and specific recommendations for all significant aspects of cancer care.

German SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine journal publishes first articles - 08 Nov 2018

The first articles have been published online in a new, SN-branded peer review journal that encompasses all aspects of clinical medicine. SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine was launched in July 2018 under the leadership of Editor-in Chief, Dr. Massoud Mahmoudi, Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US. Articles are currently accessible online; the first full issue will be published online in January 2019.

Typically, medical journals carve out a niche area of focus, and authors may find papers - which are otherwise high quality - rejected for being out of scope of a target journal. As a result, demand for a clinical medicine journal with a wide scope and interdisciplinary focus has grown. SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine was founded in response to this need, and welcomes submissions from a wide range of medical fields, from basic and translational research, and clinical studies and methods, to healthcare delivery and curriculum development. The journal publishes original research, reviews, brief communications, and case reports.

SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine is also helmed by section editors covering the sub-fields of imaging, medicine, and surgery. These editors are clinical experts in their respective fields, and manage papers submitted in each corresponding category. The journal is further backed by a large editorial board of clinicians whose professional focus reflects the variety of clinical medicine subjects.

All published journal articles will be free to access during the first two years of publication. Authors can choose whether to publish their work at no cost - accessible to readers via subscription - or to publish as permanently open access - through an article publishing charge, or APC.

US University of Winnipeg readies to go live with OCLC WorldShare Management Services by end of the year - 08 Nov 2018

The University of Winnipeg, a member of the Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries, has selected OCLC WorldShare Management Services as its new cloud-based library services platform.

WorldShare Management Services (WMS) provides all of the applications needed to manage a library, including acquisitions, circulation, resource sharing, metadata and electronic resource management, and a discovery service for library users. It also includes a range of reports that help libraries better understand their activities and track key metrics over time.

For many years, the University of Winnipeg Library has been working with OCLC and using a variety of OCLC services, including cataloging, resource sharing and discovery. According to the Dean, adding the few more services that make up the WMS suite was a good fit for the library for the future.

As part of the OCLC library cooperative and with WorldCat as its foundation, WMS enables libraries to draw on the collaborative data and work of libraries worldwide for more efficient workflows. WMS also provides libraries with the unique opportunity to share innovation, applications, infrastructure, vision and success in serving their users.

The University of Winnipeg Library is the heart of the downtown campus, providing vibrant spaces and resources for students, faculty, and community members to pursue their academic goals. The library serves as a vital component in supporting academic excellence, student diversity and access, and an outstanding student experience.

The University of Winnipeg Library is currently implementing WMS and plans to go live with the service by the end of the year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has signed an agreement with CHORUS to expand public access to the results of its funded research.

USDA's Public Access Plan calls for collaboration with partners to 'maximise the impact of the Federal research investment.' CHORUS will monitor compliance with open access requirements to help maintain permanent, authoritative access to articles based on USDA-funded research.

USDA's National Agricultural Library is one of five US national libraries and houses one of the world's largest collections devoted to agriculture and its related sciences. Through its PubAg system, NAL provides open access to more than 82,000 articles and over 2,000,000 citations that are based on USDA-funded research. The PubAg portal delivers over 82,000 full-text journal articles on the agricultural sciences and includes over 2,000,000 citations. Researchers searching PubAg can follow links to open access articles and accepted manuscripts on CHORUS publisher member websites.

CHORUS dashboards and reports facilitate monitoring of access to articles and data reporting on USDA research. CHORUS' interoperable, distributed approach is built on open standards, distributed networks and established infrastructure to facilitate sustainable open access, sharing, discoverability, reporting, and preservation of content reporting on funded research.
