German McGill Professors/MUHC RI scientists launch new Point-Of-Care Testing super collection on infectious diseases on ScienceOpen - 30 Nov 2018

Research network ScienceOpen has announced six new collections on Point-Of-Care Testing technologies curated and organised by a team led by Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, a tenured Associate Professor at McGill University in the Department of Medicine and a Research Scientist at the MUHC Research Institute, as active contributions to the mission of open science medicine research for a positive global impact in healthcare. Her trainees, Anna De Waal, Alexie Kim, Nandi Belinsky, joined her in curating this collection.

Point-Of-Care Testing (POCT) technologies have revolutionised testing for many infectious diseases by providing a much faster access to test results, allowing for rapid results and - where integrated in clinical settings - help expedite clinical decision making. Dr. Nitika Pant Pai emphasized the importance of POCT for expanded access, rapid clinical decision making for all key infectious diseases (HIV, STDs, NTDs, tuberculosis) and also for antimicrobial resistance detection and surveillance globally.

To further open scientific research and access to all the information on POCT for HIV/STBBI/NTDs/AMR and to encourage people to get tested, Dr. Pant Pai has been the collection editor of 'Point-Of-Care Testing for HIV' on ScienceOpen since 2017. Now, she is taking the POCT project on ScienceOpen a step further by launching a super collection 'Point-Of-Care Testing for Infectious Diseases' that features six new Point-Of-Care Testing collections for HIV Self-Testing, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), Hepatitis, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and Tuberculosis.

Every collection on ScienceOpen is assigned a CrossRef DOI, becoming a part of the editor's ORCID record. Using the professional networking platform MyScienceOpen, editors can then comment and write editorials on each collection, and invite any researcher to publicly review an article in their collection. Collection editors can also trace how their collection is performing by tracking the number of articles, views, peer reviews, recommendations, social media activity, and the overall Altmetric score presented in the summary statistics.

Dr. Madhukar Pai, Professor McGill University and Director of McGill International TB Center, joins the initiative as the lead Editor of the TB collection.

ScienceOpen highlights the new Point-Of-Care collections in its research discovery environment of over 49 million articles and records as a successful researcher-led initiative to optimize the scientific and social impact of medical study in this field.

US HemOnc Today launches new subspecialty publication, Cell Therapy Next - 30 Nov 2018

SLACK Inc., the publisher of HemOnc Today, has announced the launch of a new subspecialty publication, Cell Therapy Next. The publication will debut at the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting & Exposition on December 1-4, 2018 in San Diego. The publication is set to print six times a year.

Cell Therapy Next will lay the groundwork in explaining how cellular therapy has developed and why many believe this could be a paradigm shift in the treatment of a range of cancers. As the publication continues, it will track the state of the science, providing updates on the clinical development of new agents and the results of clinical trials. The publication will also provide updates on late preclinical research and the results of efforts to bring this treatment strategy to solid tumors.

Cell Therapy Next will serve as a practical guide for the clinician, with articles and information on selecting the ideal patient, educating patients on the complex treatment process, managing side effects and the risk profile of these new agents.

Cell Therapy Next is set to launch at the American Society for Hematology annual meeting December 1-4 in San Diego.

UK BMJs Clinical Decision Support Training Initiative wins Innovation in Global Security prize - 30 Nov 2018

Healthcare knowledge provider BMJ has announced that its Clinical Decision Support Training Initiative has been awarded the prize for Innovation in Global Security by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP).

The educational initiative gives healthcare professionals access to the latest evidence-based information on infectious diseases through BMJ's online learning and decision support tools, BMJ Best Practice and BMJ Learning.

By improving the knowledge and skills needed for early detection and diagnosis, doctors are more prepared for the prevention and management of infectious diseases.

GCSP established the prize in 2015, under its Geopolitics and Global Futures Programme, to recognise innovative approaches to addressing international security challenges.

The prize rewards those who have shown dedication to sustainable security, and preservation of human dignity, security and justice.

This year, GCSP received over 150 applications from across the world, addressing issues such as human rights violations, defence, education and climate change.

Launched in 2016, BMJ's Clinical Decision Support Training Initiative focuses on pandemic preparedness and prevention by improving detection, diagnosis and management of infectious diseases. It aims to achieve health security by developing the medical workforce and strengthening health systems in the long term. The initiative has already trained more than 12,000 infectious disease specialists and doctors across 900 institutions across the Middle East, Central and South East Asia regions.

UK Kudos raises 2.2M to launch new communications management system for researchers - 30 Nov 2018

Kudos, the award-winning service for maximising the reach and impact of research, will develop and launch a new communications management system for researchers, after securing 2.2m investment.

The global research sector is undergoing significant and accelerating change, with mechanisms for evaluation, publication and reward being overhauled to improve efficiencies. With over 150b invested annually in research through universities worldwide, innovation is needed to improve the return on this expenditure; effective communication, throughout the research lifecycle, is central to this.

Launched in 2014, Kudos serves over a quarter of a million researchers, affiliated with over 10,000 universities and other research institutions in 190 countries. Having built a central data set of communications activities and results, the company is uniquely positioned to develop algorithms for maximising engagement with research and its potential for impact.

Through this investment, Kudos will rapidly expand its service to enable research groups, departments and universities to plan, action and report on their communication activities - across multiple projects, outputs and publications - and understand which are most effective for engaging specific target audiences. Further, the data collected will give funders, publishers and other stakeholders greater insight into the most effective communication mechanisms for improving research impact.
