Netherland Elsevier and the International Solar Energy Society launch second Renewable Transformation Challenge - 12 Mar 2019

Elsevier, the information analytics business specialising in science and health, and the International Solar Energy Society (ISES), have announced the return of the Renewable Transformation Challenge, following the success of the first Challenge in 2017. The Challenge honours outstanding work that contributes to a world powered by renewable energy and with accessible energy-for-all. The winner of this year’s Renewable Transformation Challenge will be awarded €20,000 EUR.

The Renewable Transformation Challenge is open to individuals and organisations in both not-for-profit and commercial sectors worldwide.

Applications may present ongoing projects, product ideas, innovative technologies, policy initiatives, programs, research, analyses, or complete solutions targeting either the supply side (e.g., energy generation for end-use energy consumption), or demand side (e.g., energy efficiency), or both. Innovative ideas will be given preference over incremental improvement projects. In 2017, the competition received over 200 submissions globally and first prize was awarded to Me SOLshare from Bangladesh for their proposal of an E-Rickshaw charging station.

The winning proposal will be the one that best demonstrates the transformation to a world powered by renewable energy and that has potential to widen access to energy, particularly in developing countries. Submissions will be assessed in terms of applicability, impact, sustainability and scalability.

A panel of international scientific experts will review the applications, and the top five will be put forward to an Elsevier-ISES Awards Committee who will make the final decision.

In addition to the €20,000 EUR, the winning entry, or one representative of the winning team, will receive a free registration to the Solar World Congress 2019 in Santiago, Chile where the Award will be presented, along with one Gold membership to the ISES.

The Challenge is now open for submissions until April 30, 2019. All submissions must be made online using the 2019 Registration Form.

UK Emerald signs DORA, underlines its commitment to accelerating pathways to impact - 12 Mar 2019

Academic publisher Emerald Publishing has signed up to DORA, the Declaration on Research Assessment, supporting its vision to advance practical and robust approaches to research assessment globally and across all scholarly disciplines. This aligns with Emerald’s Impact Manifesto, launched by Vicky Williams, Emerald’s CEO in March 2018. The manifesto called for change across the whole academic ecosystem, recognising that the traditional markers of influence such as citations were not sufficient to tell the full story of impact.

A core thrust of DORA is that journal-based metrics are often misused and ill applied in research and researcher evaluation. This takes place at key transition points during a researcher’s career, including hiring, promotion, and tenure. In signing the Declaration, Emerald is committing to playing its part in improving the culture around research evaluation. In the short term, this involves implementing a number of existing DORA recommendations for publishers, including presenting the journal impact factor within the context of a variety of journal-based metrics, exploring ways to make article-level metrics available, encouraging editors and authors to adopt wider, responsible author practices e.g. in line with TOP guidelines, as well as introducing new Open Access and Open Research opportunities for researchers.

Emerald was the first to launch an Open Research Publishing Platform for mission driven research last month, with its first six gateways, tackling critical world issues linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In a further move away from traditional publishing, all research published on Emerald Open Research will be subject to open peer review, where reviews are published alongside the article together with the authors’ responses. This approach not only offers rapid publication, but the transparent peer review process encourages experts to provide constructive feedback to help authors improve their work.

Emerald is continuing to lead the publishing charge towards meaningful impact, working with its global author network to publish research which makes a difference and investing further in the research community to support real world change. In line with its real impact manifesto, Emerald is supporting communities to overcome barriers to impact, working in partnership with key agencies to strengthen connections between research and society, challenging simplistic and outdated approaches to impact, and driving impact literacy in the research sector.

Signing DORA is a natural extension to Emerald’s commitment to driving positive change, working in partnership with communities across and beyond the research ecosystem.

UK Kudos launches new 'featured images' capability with integration of Unsplash - 12 Mar 2019

Kudos, the award-winning service for accelerating research impact through strategic communications management, has enhanced its free service for authors with the addition of a new ‘featured image’ capability. Images help to increase traffic and make pages more engaging and memorable for readers. The new feature is enabled by an integration with Unsplash, a free image bank that provides a wide range of stock photography. Over 500 publication profile pages in Kudos have already been enhanced through the addition of featured images; a random sample of twenty showed that page views had increased by an average of 23 percent following the addition of the featured image.

Researchers can quickly and easily add a photo to their publication profile in Kudos by searching the Unsplash database from within Kudos. They can select either an abstract image, or one that is thematically appropriate for their work. The chosen image is then presented alongside the plain language title and summary that authors create and disseminate via Kudos, to increase the reach and impact potential of their work. Images are credited to the photographer and Unsplash.

Featured images are also incorporated in Kudos’ Shareable PDFs, which are used by authors to measure dissemination of their work via scholarly collaboration networks, and - uniquely - to compare this with other communications channels such as email, social media or events.
