German Springer Nature partners with DrugPatentWatch to provide drug patent information - 12 Apr 2019

Springer Nature has announced that a new module focusing on patents has been added to the drug pipeline tool AdisInsight. The module allows users to find out which drugs have been patented and when regulatory protection may expire.

Drug patent information can help key stakeholders in the drug discovery process understand the impact of patent expiry on the competitive landscape, or their market share. They may also be able to evaluate licensing opportunities and explore what opportunities exist for drugs without patent protection, as well as develop end-of-life strategies for their products.

According to Jeff Southwood, Product Development Director for AdisInsight, one of the major struggles the users face is that they have to rely very heavily on patent attorneys or IP specialists to assess patent protection because of the expertise required to find this information in patent-specific databases and to understand and interpret these complex documents. AdisInsight Patents aims to advance the drug discovery process by making drug-centric patent information accessible to any user by including familiar search terms and at-a-glance summaries.

DrugPatentWatch, a provider of global business intelligence on biologic and small molecule drug patents, will deliver the patent content to AdisInsight. The new AdisInsight patents module is available for existing AdisInsight customers to purchase as an add-on to their subscription or to new subscribers to the platform.

US ALA and SAGE Publishing release new Libraries Transform tools for promoting critical thinking - 12 Apr 2019

The American Library Association (ALA) has released a new Libraries Transform toolkit with free public awareness resources relating to critical thinking. The toolkit was created through a collaboration with SAGE Publishing, a Library Champion whose generous financial support helps fund Libraries Transform.

Critical thinking is a crucial skill for students and lifelong learners: the ability to find and evaluate reliable information allows people to make smart decisions and hold well-reasoned beliefs. With their vast resources and staff expertise in information literacy, libraries play an essential role in empowering the population to think critically.

The toolkit offers messaging, data, and print and digital graphics for libraries to use in their marketing and advocacy efforts around critical thinking. Libraries and supporters are encouraged to download the free materials and use them throughout their communities.

SAGE believes that education and engaged scholarship are the key to a healthy society, a belief that has led to the creation of resources to cultivate critical thinking. In 2017, the company published Tom Chatfield’s Critical Thinking: Your Guide to Effective Argument, Successful Analysis and Independent Study, for use in the classroom and beyond. A course on developing the skill is also in development. SAGE publishes resources that foster other introductory skills in students, such as critical reading, writing and studying skills, and recently launched a Critical Thinking Hub on their website with free webinars, quizzes and more.

US American College of Physicians unveils new Quality Improvement program - ACP Advance - 12 Apr 2019

The American College of Physicians (ACP) has unveiled ACP Advance, a new quality improvement (QI) program to help organisations and physicians improve patient care. ACP Advance features a physician-led coaching service, a new QI curriculum, and access to virtual training programs and resources.

The ACP Advance coaching service provides expert physician-led coaching in quality improvement and high value care through virtual training in quality improvement methodology based on ACP’s new QI curriculum, tailored coaching to support QI implementation over the course of 12 months, and webinars for sharing of best practices and collaborative learning opportunities.

Over the course of a year, ACP coaches will work with organisations and practices to help them assess gaps, identify priorities, and co-design a tailored QI initiative. ACP coaches will provide ongoing virtual implementation support and curate a package of ACP’s resources in quality improvement, change management, high value care, joy in practice, and patient engagement.

The ACP Advance quality improvement curriculum provides virtual and practical, step-by-step guidance to support organisations and individual physicians through each step of the QI process, from establishing the reason for change to implementing and sustaining change. The curriculum integrates four key pillars to achieve success: clinician engagement and ownership, team-based care, patient and family partnership, and maximising efficiency while minimising burden. Individual ACP members and ACP Advance subscribers may access the curriculum for free. ACP non-members will be able to access the curriculum for a fee.

CME and MOC points are available for physicians who participate in the physician-led coaching and / or the curriculum. These activities also count for patient safety CME.

The ACP Advance chronic care QI programs and resources span various clinical conditions and focus areas including adult immunisation, atrial fibrillation, chronic pain and safe opioid prescribing, and diabetes.

US Pensacola Christian College to support student engagement with Ex Libris campusM mobile app - 12 Apr 2019

Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, has announced that Pensacola Christian College (PCC) in Florida has fully deployed the Ex Libris campusM® cloud-based mobile platform to support student engagement and success. The campusM platform was chosen for its unique ability to bring together campus services under one umbrella and deliver the school’s campus app, myPCC, to the community via smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

For today’s digital-native PCC students, campus expectations are informed by daily experiences in the digital economy, where everything is on demand, convenient, personalised, and just a click away. The primary goal of myPCC is to provide dynamic, on-demand access to student resources; convey information on a variety of academic, athletic, fine arts, social, and service activities; and enable students to select and customise the desired options in their campus app. Using out-of-the-box campusM functionality, the MyPCC app employs multiple personalised profiles to offer each type of user a unique experience.

In the future, PCC hopes to extend app usage to prospective students with the goal of strengthening their engagement with the school and raising their awareness of events and opportunities when they visit the campus.

US Union County College and Cengage to provide students with cost savings textbook service - 12 Apr 2019

Union County (NJ) College has partnered with Cengage to provide their students with the revolutionary cost savings textbook service. Beginning in Fall 2019, Union County College students will have day-one access to their textbooks and course materials using a new subscription service from Cengage. Included as part of course fees, students can expect to save hundreds of dollars annually on their course materials. Cengage provides course materials to almost half of the 20 million higher education students across the country.

Cengage Unlimited is the industry’s first-of-its-kind subscription for college textbooks and course materials. A subscription includes access to more than 22,000 products, including eBooks, online homework access codes and study guides. Students pay one price for Cengage Unlimited-no matter how many materials they use. Cengage Unlimited significantly reduces the cost of course materials and, with more than 1 million subscriptions sold, students have already saved $60 million this academic year.

According to Dr. Bernard Polnariev, Dean of Curriculum, Accreditation and American Honors, the Cengage Unlimited program is a ‘game-changer for their students,’ providing a more affordable way for students to access materials. Faculty will also benefit by students being more prepared because they will all have all of their materials for the start of class.

In addition to Union County College, Warren County Community College in New Jersey also offers Cengage Unlimited to all students to help increase affordable access to quality learning.
