US NISO, NFAIS merger finalised - 02 Jul 2019

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and the National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS) have announced that efforts to merge the two organisations have been successfully completed. The fully-integrated entity consists of more than 250 libraries, government agencies, associations, and content and technology providers. Working together, those stakeholders will more easily and efficiently craft collaborative solutions to problems facing the information community as a whole.

The merged organisation will operate under the long-established NISO name, while sustaining the momentum of high-profile events such as the NFAIS Annual Conference and the NFAIS Humanities Roundtable.

The transfer of all assets was expected to be completed by June 30, 2019.

US CAS launches computer-aided retrosynthetic analysis solution, drives increase in R&D productivity - 02 Jul 2019

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society specializing in scientific information solutions, has launched a computer-aided retrosynthetic analysis solution that systematically identifies new pathways to chemical compounds. Now available to all SciFindern users, this next-generation capability is empowering chemistry researchers around the world to rapidly identify, compare and prioritize alternative synthetic pathways.

The Retrosynthesis Planner in SciFindern assists chemists with the synthesis portion of this process. Researchers are confirming this new functionality accelerates research, improves productivity and will help them get new products such as pharmaceuticals, agrichemicals and performance chemicals to market faster.

For any known molecule, chemists can now use SciFindern to connect reaction steps revealed throughout millions of publications from around the globe to quickly build a comprehensive, intuitively organised retrosynthetic plan for their application. Whether users are looking for optimum synthetic routes to known intermediates, seeking cutting-edge solutions to replace older routes or exploring ideas for scale-up processes, the new retrosynthesis planning functionality in SciFindern reduces the time spent finding, validating and prioritising synthetic routes from hours to minutes. In addition, the SciFindern retrosynthesis plan provides direct access to related references and commercial suppliers, so researchers can complete their entire synthetic planning workflow in a single solution.

With timeframes to bring new chemical products to market measured in years and investment in R&D measured in billions, chemical R&D organisations are constantly seeking new solutions to improve productivity and speed breakthroughs to market. Yet, as the volume and complexity of published scientific information grows exponentially each year, efficiency becomes continuously more challenging to achieve. SciFindern leverages the latest technology to provide insights that save chemists significant time and optimise processes, providing high value to research leaders.

The CAS collection of human-curated scientific content is recognised as the largest and highest quality in the world, amassing data organised over the past 110+ years. Data volume and quality are critical requirements to fuel emerging technologies, including AI and machine learning, among others. With nearly 120 million reactions underpinning the synthetic planning feature in SciFindern, this valuable solution is uniquely able to provide chemists a comprehensive view of the relevant possibilities.

CAS has also collaborated with John Wiley and Sons, Inc. to deliver more value to chemistry researchers. CAS developed this new experimental retrosynthesis capability, in part, with Wiley’s ChemPlanner technology.

Taiwan Global Views Monthly and Elsevier announce 2019 Taiwan University Ranking results - 02 Jul 2019

Global Views Monthly (GVM) and Elsevier, the global information analytics business specialising in science and health, commemorated their three-year collaboration at a signing ceremony to provide data for Taiwan and GVM's Taiwan University Ranking.

The three-year annual ranking exercise – from 2019 to 2021 – will use the most comprehensive and balanced performance indicators to evaluate Taiwanese universities on: research achievement, teaching performance, internationalization, academic-industry collaboration, societal impact, and financial management.

Drawing data from Elsevier's Scopus, the industry-leading abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed academic literature, GVM will be able to analyse in detail research activity from Taiwan's higher education institutions. Elsevier's SciVal analytics tool was used to perform research metrics analysis to provide Taiwanese universities a broader view of their research performance that includes economic impact and international collaboration.

At the ceremony, GVM also launched the 2019 Taiwan University Ranking, the first from its three-year collaboration with Elsevier following a successful pilot ranking exercise in 2018 by the two companies.

The quality, breadth and reliability of Scopus data and the power of SciVal performance metrics is the leading reason ranking organisations choose Elsevier to underpin their evaluations and reports.

Launched in 1986, Global Views Monthly has emerged to become Taiwan's leading business magazine specializing in macro-economics, management, technology and humanities that is read by industry visionaries, opinion leaders and corporate executives. The magasine features outstanding corporations, in-depth analysis of events and issues, perspectives from corporate and government leaders, discussions of management models and strategies, executive profiles and curated articles from business journals.
