Elsevier reports expansion in publishing partnerships in 2006 - 18 Jan 2007
STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced that the company initiated 24 new journal publishing partnerships with leading international organisations in 2006, ensuring the continuing growth of its society journal publishing programme. Over the years, Elsevier has developed relationships with many prestigious partners and currently publishes on behalf of over 500 learned societies, professional associations and research institutes. Among the new partners are: Ambulatory Pediatrics Association; American Association of Endodontists; American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics; Australian College of Critical Care Nursing; Chinese Academy of Sciences; Chinese Chemical Society; Chinese Society of Particuology; European Federation of Biotechnology; International Association of Hydraulic Engineering; International Society for Clinical Densitometry; National Lipid Association; and Society of Cardiovascular and Computed Tomography. Working in tandem with the global science and health communities, Elsevier publishes more than 2,000 journals and 1,900 new books per year. NPG unveils education initiative for science students and faculty - 18 Jan 2007
Scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG), UK, has announced the launch of Nature Education, a new venture to develop innovative educational resources and tools for science students and their professors. The new initiative will seek to build upon NPG's reputation with educators and students as a source of timely, relevant information. It will focus primarily on creating leading edge, digitally-based, learning solutions in biology, chemistry and physics, taking a non-traditional approach to the college education market. Vikram Savkar has been appointed Publishing Director of Nature Education. Prior to this, he served as Director of New Ventures with Pearson, where he was responsible for conceiving and implementing the company's strategy related to content, including content customisation, digital content management and institutional relationships. IEEE signs archiving agreement with Portico - 18 Jan 2007
Non-profit electronic archiving service provider Portico, US, has announced an agreement with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to preserve the organisation's periodicals and conference proceedings. This inclusion brings the number of titles in the Portico archive to over 6000. Under the agreement, Portico will preserve IEEE's 137 periodicals (journals, transactions, magazines, and newsletters) and 163 conference proceedings for future generations of scholars, practitioners, researchers and students. Also, IEEE has agreed to make an annual financial contribution to support Portico's ongoing operations. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. It produces nearly one-third of the world's literature in the fields of electrical and electronics engineering and computer science, as well as develops over 900 active industry standards. Wiley and SHM set to launch InfoPOEMs for Hospitalists - 18 Jan 2007
Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., US, and the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), US, have announced an agreement to launch InfoPOEMs for Hospitalists. Slated for launch in spring 2007, InfoPOEMs for Hospitalists will be published in print as a stand-alone publication. The bi-monthly will be mailed with the Journal of Hospital Medicine, the official peer-reviewed journal of SHM. In addition, hospitalist physicians who are SHM members will receive syndicated POEMs (Patient-Oriented Evidence that Matters) by email to support them in providing general medical care for hospitalised patients. InfoPOEMs are summaries of evidence-based medical research filtered from over 120 leading peer-reviewed journals graded for validity and relevance to patient outcomes. About one in 40 eligible studies is converted into a POEM and each POEM is reviewed by at least 15 physicians and/or physician editors prior to publication. An evidence-based medical content and web-based search tools provider InfoPOEM, Inc.'s, flagship services form the basis of a medical information management system that improves patient care and increases clinical efficiency. ICIS Forecasting launches ParaXylene-PET monthly report - 18 Jan 2007
Chemical and oil information provider ICIS, part of Reed Business Information, US, has announced the launch of the ParaXylene to Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) monthly report. ICIS forecasting's methodology forecasts prices by incorporating the output of the index in the forecasting model of each feedstock product (e.g., PX, PET). The price generated by incorporating the Market Sentiment Index is provided separately in the monthly report. This is the seventh product chain included in ICIS forecasting. In 2006, the service launched reports for the Polystyrene, Polyethylene, Polypropylene and Phenol-Acetone markets in the US and the Polyethylene market in Asia. ICIS forecasting is completely independent from ICIS price reporting and is based on statistical analysis of historical assessments plus textual analysis of news files.
A&WMA launches e-library powered by Knovel publishing technology - 18 Jan 2007
Web-based information services provider Knovel Corporation, US, has announced a new partnership with the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA). Under the deal, A&WMA will launch an electronic library powered by Knovel, which will provide its members with access to industry-related interactive references. The new service gives A&WMA members online use of full-text versions of 35 relevant reference books. It will provide more than 9,000 professionals with current information on topics such as environmental health and safety, recycling, and air quality management. Along with showcasing a platform of claimed high-quality interactive titles with strong scientific value, Knovel's partnership with A&WMA allows members to navigate through and electronically manipulate the content, as part of their membership benefit package. Knovel has a specialised collection of interactive analytical tools that help scientists and engineers extract information from traditionally static graphs for calculations, equation solving and sorting and exporting of tabular data. Its interactive platform brings together essential content and advanced workflow solutions to provide researchers with practical new ways of quickly finding and applying critical data.
Geoff Unwin to step down as Chairman of United Business Media - 18 Jan 2007
Niche information services provider United Business Media plc, UK, has announced that Geoff Unwin has informed the Board of his intention to step down as Chairman and as a member of the Board at the end of 2007. Geoff Unwin was appointed to the board as a non-executive director in 1996, and became chairman in November 2002. He was previously chief executive officer of Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, an IT consulting firm.
