Asian institutions acquire access to Springer eBook Collection - 08 Feb 2007

STM publisher Springer Science+Business Media, Germany, has announced that it has signed a number of agreements with leading universities and research institutions in Asia for access to its Springer eBook Collection. The company had launched its upgraded SpringerLink platform, www.springerlink.com, along with its eBook Collection to Asian users at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Korea and the Beijing Book Fair last year.

In India, agreements have been signed with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, the University of Madras in Chennai and West Bengal University in Kolkata among others. In China and Southeast Asia, students, researchers and staff have access to Springer eBooks by means of the Joint University Librarians Advisory Committee (JULAC) Consortium in Hong Kong. The KESLI Consortium in South Korea and major consortia in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand will provide access to Springer eBooks through the literary agency, iGroup. In addition, Springer has signed agreements with leading research institutions in Taiwan. In Japan, almost one dozen institutions and libraries are currently using eBook.

The acquisition of eBook allows students, researchers and staff at the various institutions to electronically access all Springer books from the copyright years 2005, 2006 and 2007 in the areas of science, technology and medicine. Every year an additional 4,000 new eBook titles are published with which libraries and research institutions can expand their collection.

Harvard Health launches journal on treating prostate disease - 08 Feb 2007

Harvard Health Publications, the publishing division of Harvard Medical School, US, has released the premier issue of a new publication - Harvard Medical School Perspectives on Prostate Disease. Dr. Marc B. Garnick, Clinical Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, serves as Editor-in-chief.

The quarterly seeks to provide multiple perspectives about how best to treat the most common prostate diseases as well as related conditions such as erectile dysfunction and low testosterone levels. It delivers authoritative, evidence-based research and practical guidance for effectively addressing a prostate disorder while controlling side effects and maintaining quality of life.

To ensure the most accurate and objective information possible, the editorial comment seeks to be devoid of any commercial bias. The editorial board consists of eminent Harvard and European physicians, who have expertise in the disorders covered by the journal. The journal is supported in part by a grant from a charitable nonprofit family foundation.

Elsevier, European Federation of Biotechnology launch Biotechnology journal - 08 Feb 2007

STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced the September 2007 launch of a cross-disciplinary research and review journal - Biotechnology, the Journal. The journal will be the official publication of the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB). John Hodgson, former editor of Trends in Biotechnology, will serve as Editor-in-Chief. A bi-monthly, Biotechnology, the Journal is projected to be a platform for peer-reviewed articles and editorial comments related to biotechnology. The journal will target academic and commercial bioscientists interested not only in science but also in its translation and use. The launch is planned to coincide with the 13th European Congress on Biotechnology (ECB13), to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from September 16-19.

Established in 1978, EFB is Europe's non-profit federation of National Biotechnology Associations, Learned Societies, Universities, Scientific Institutes, Biotech companies and individuals. It seeks to advance the sustainable and beneficial use of the life sciences; promote research and innovation at the cutting edge of biotechnology; provide a forum for interdisciplinary and international cooperation; improve scientific education; and facilitate an informed dialogue between scientists and the public. EFB has 225 Institutional Members and 5,000 personal members spanning 56 countries.

Hindawi adds more titles to its open access collection - 08 Feb 2007

STM publisher Hindawi Publishing Corporation, US, has announced the launch of ten new titles to its suite of open access (OA) journals. This addition marks the further growth of Hindawi's publishing program in two of its core areas - engineering and biomedicine.

The journals are: Advances in Acoustics and Vibration, Advances in Human-Computer Interaction, Advances in Pharmacological Sciences, Advances in Urology, Dermatology Research and Practice, Distributed Information Systems, Gastroenterology Research and Practice, International Journal of Plasma Science and Engineering, International Journal of Reacting Systems and Journal of Artificial Evolution and Applications.

Accepted articles in these journals shall be made immediately available online under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits the unrestricted use of all published material provided that it is properly cited. All articles will go through a thorough in-house production process, including markup, copy editing, and reference linking.

Google adds Princeton library to its books scanning project - 08 Feb 2007

Internet search services provider Google, Inc., US, has announced Princeton University's centuries-old library as its latest partner to its Books Library Project, it has been reported. Princeton is the 12th library to join the Google Library Project.

Under the initiative, Google will digitise nearly 1 million public domain books that are no longer covered by copyright protections. The library has over six million printed works and five million manuscripts in its library system.

The Google Books Library Project digitises books from major libraries worldwide and makes their collections searchable on Google Book. Other libraries who are currently working with Google to digitise portions of their collections include the University of Virginia Library, University of California, Harvard University, University Complutense of Madrid, University of Michigan, the New York Public Library, Oxford University, Stanford University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Cadmus to acquire LexisNexis' printing operations in Charlottesville and Conklin - 08 Feb 2007

Publishing services provider Cadmus Communications Corporation, US, has announced an agreement to acquire LexisNexis' conventional printing operations in Charlottesville, Virginia and its digital printing operations in Conklin, New York. The company has also signed a five-year agreement to produce substantially all of the latter's printing requirements.

Under the deal, nearly all of the approximately 90 employees in Charlottesville and 35 employees in Conklin will move to Cadmus as result of the transaction. However, the deal will not directly impact other LexisNexis operations. In announcing the agreement, LexisNexis noted that it will now be able to concentrate its efforts and investments in areas critical to enhancing its competitive position in the markets it serves.

LexisNexis, part of Reed Elsevier Group plc, is a leading publisher of research collections and reference solutions for libraries worldwide. The firm offers research services to a wide range of professionals in the academic, corporate, legal, government, risk management, law enforcement and accounting sectors.

McGraw-Hill Higher Education test banks to be available in Respondus format - 08 Feb 2007

Print and online educational products provider McGraw-Hill Education, US, has announced an alliance with Respondus Inc., a US-based provider of assessment tools for learning management systems in higher education. Under the deal, hundreds of McGraw-Hill test banks will now be available in Respondus format at numerous colleges and universities worldwide.

McGraw-Hill Higher Education, which currently distributes test banks in the EZ Test format, will additionally make test banks available from the Respondus Test Bank Network. The Respondus network allows faculty to download test banks with their Respondus 3.5 and StudyMate 2.0 applications. McGraw-Hill Higher Education has released an initial set of Respondus-formatted test banks. Additional textbook test banks will be added to the Respondus Test Bank Network throughout 2007.

Respondus 3.5 is an exam authoring and management application. Assessments can be printed to paper or published directly to course management systems distributed by e-learning vendors such as Blackboard, ANGEL and eCollege. The latest alliance will also allow faculty who use StudyMate 2.0 to create Flash-based learning activities and games from McGraw-Hill's test bank files.
