Science societies to launch federated vertical search portal, scitopia - 18 Apr 2007
Thirteen science and technology societies from across the world are set to launch scitopia.org, a free federated vertical search portal, in a bid to create more direct access to their collective content. The new portal, to be launched in June 2007, will enable users to explore the research most cited in scholarly work and patents in a single click. Founding partners include the American Geophysical Union, American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Institute of Physics, American Physical Society, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Electrochemical Society, IEEE, Institute of Physics Publishing, Optical Society of America, SPIE, Society of Automotive Engineers and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Other organisations will be invited to join as the project progresses. Scitopia.org will aggregate the entire electronic libraries of key players in major science and technology disciplines. Users will be able to search from more than three million documents, including peer reviewed journal content and conference proceedings, spanning 150 years of science and technology. Visitors to scitopia.org will be presented with a simple, but function-rich interface. They will be able to search for full text articles using a fielded approach, for example, by article title or author name. Researchers at institutions with subscriptions to the content will be automatically authenticated and will be able to click through to it. Members of partner societies will also be able to access full text, depending upon the association's membership policies. Pay-per-view options will allow others to purchase as many articles as they choose. As a federated search, no new subscriptions will be needed to use the portal. Additionally, because scitopia.org links directly to each society's digital library, searching will access real-time information, providing the most current research. Newstex unveils BlogAlerts service for enterprise customers - 18 Apr 2007
Metasearch technology provider MuseGlobal, Inc., US, and content-on-demand provider Newstex, US, have announced the availability of BlogAlerts, a new product that delivers blog content to information providers and enterprise customers. It also categorises each post by topics using a high-precision, relevance-based processing engine. This allows Newstex to deliver the resulting feed of refined blog content in easy-to-integrate NewsML format to downstream redistributors and enterprise customers for use in their respective content offerings.
