ETS to buy Thomson Corporation's Prometric - 04 Jul 2007

Information solutions provider Thomson Corporation, US, has announced that it has announced a definitive agreement with leading educational measurement and research organisation, ETS. Under the deal, the latter will purchase Thomson Prometric for $435 million. The purchase price includes $310 million in cash plus $125 million to be paid through a promissory note due in 2014. The transaction, expected to close in the third quarter of 2007, is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

The sale is part of Thomson's previously announced strategy to sell the assets of its Learning business via three independent sales processes to enable Thomson to pursue opportunities better aligned with its growth strategy and business model.

Thomson Prometric is the recognized global leader in technology-enabled assessment services, providing paper-and-pencil, Internet and computer-based testing solutions. It offers a fully integrated testing system that includes test development, test delivery and data management capabilities. On behalf of more than 400 clients in the academic, professional, government, corporate and information technology markets, Thomson Prometric develops and/or delivers assessments through a global network of testing centers in 132 countries as well as direct to candidates via the Internet.

Nature Publishing Group launches new company - NPG Iberoamerica - 04 Jul 2007

Scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG), UK, has announced the launch of a new company, NPG Iberoamerica. The company will be headed by Lucia Ferreiros, an experienced publisher in health sciences who formerly led Elsevier Health Sciences in Spain and Latin America.

Based in Madrid, Spain, NPG Iberoamerica's seeks to develop medical communications business for Macmillan Medical Communications (MMC) in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets of Europe and Latin America as well as other non-English-speaking markets in Europe. MMC was established in June 2006 to develop medical communications and health sciences business for Macmillan, owner of NPG, with exclusive access to the high quality scientific and medical content of NPG. It now has regional offices in London, Philadelphia, Tokyo and Madrid headed by three experienced leaders in medical communications and health sciences publishing.

In July last year, Susumu Onishi, former president of Elsevier's health sciences company in Japan Excerpta Medica spearheaded the launch of MMC in Asia out of Tokyo under the direction of Antoine Bocquet, Associate Director of NPG in the Asia-Pacific region. This was followed by the set up of MMC operations in Philadelphia and London headed by John Elduff, former general manager of the pharmaceutical sales division and senior vice president of sales at Elsevier.

SAGE partners with the Infection Control Nurses Association to publish BJIC - 04 Jul 2007

Academic and professional publisher SAGE Publications has announced a partnership with the Infection Control Nurses Association. Under the deal, the global publisher will publish the latter's British Journal of Infection Control (BJIC), starting September 2007.

IOP extends free trial access to online scientific journal platform - 04 Jul 2007

Non-profit scientific publisher Institute of Physics Publishing (IOP), UK, has announced that the free trial access to IOPscience, an online journal platform, has been extended until July 16, 2007.

IOPscience, currently in the beta stage, is claimed to offer unique and useful features and functionality, aimed at allowing easier access to its STM content. During the free trial, all full text content can be downloaded. Users can take this opportunity to try IOPscience at http://iopscience.iop.org and send their feedback, comments or questions to iopscience@iop.org.

The recent updates include personalised 'Latest Articles', which helps to see the latest articles published by IOP in a particular subject area. RSS feeds have been made accessible to all external news readers such as Bloglines, thereby allowing researchers to be updated with all new research added to IOPscience. In addition, the new 'Related Articles' tab, available from every abstract page shows articles that are related to the one the user is viewing, allowing him/her to discover more content.

Four Holt education products bag AEP awards - 04 Jul 2007

Secondary education publisher Holt, Rinehart and Winston, US, part of Reed Elsevier Group plc, has announced that four of its products received special recognition by the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP). The products, Holt Science and Technology Lab Generator CD-ROM, Holt Exploring Food and Fitness Choices Interactive CD-ROM, Holt Multicultural Readers, and Holt Lesson Tutorial Videos, won the respective categories at the AEP 2007 Distinguished Achievement Awards. The winners came from three disciplines: science/health, language arts and mathematics.

Judging panels are drawn from a national pool of writing, publishing and design experts in print and technology; education editors; educators; and curriculum experts.
