BioMed Central responds to Yale university library withdrawal from OA initiative - 10 Aug 2007

Open access publisher BioMed Central, US, has clarified its approach to sustainable funding for open access (OA) publishing after the scientific and medical library at Yale University recently ceased its support for the company's OA publishing effort.

The main concern expressed in the library's announcement is that the amount payable to cover the cost of publications by Yale researchers in BioMed Central's journals has increased significantly, year-on-year. According to the publisher, an increase in the number of OA articles being submitted and going on to be published has led to an increase in the total cost of its OA publishing service. However, the cost per article published in its journals represents excellent value compared to other publishers.

To ensure that funding of OA publication is sustainable, BioMed Central has encouraged institutions to set aside a small fraction of the indirect funding contribution that they receive from funders to create a central OA fund. As library budgeting practices continue to evolve and other resources for funding OA publishing also become increasingly available, BioMed Central looks forward to working in tandem with librarians and research administrators at Yale library. The aim is to develop a solution that will make it as easy as possible for Yale's researchers to continue publish their OA research articles in BioMed Central's journals.

Cornell University Library joins Google Book Search Library project - 10 Aug 2007

Cornell University Library, one of the leading academic research libraries in the US, has announced that it is partnering with internet search services provider Google, Inc., US. Cornell University is reportedly the 27th institution to join the Google Book Search Library Project, which digitises books or parts of books from major libraries and allows Internet users to search their collections online.

Under the initiative, Google will digitise nearly 500,000 works from the Library and make them available online using Google Book Search. Materials from Mann Library, one of 20 member libraries that comprise Cornell University Library, will be digitised as part of the agreement. Mann's collections includes titles in subjects such as biological sciences, natural resources, plant, animal and environmental sciences, applied economics, management and public policy, human development, textiles and apparel, nutrition and food science.

Over the next six years, Cornell will provide Google with public domain and copyrighted holdings from its collections. If a work has no copyright restrictions, the full text will be available for online viewing. For books protected by copyright, a search will provide basic information such as the book's title, author's name and at most a few lines of text related to the search. In addition, Google will provide Cornell with a digital copy of all the materials scanned, which will eventually be incorporated into the university's own digital library.
