EBSCO, IOC and Hasselt University join forces to create Open Science Directory - 27 Feb 2008
Journal subscription services provider EBSCO Information Services, US, has recently joined forces with Hasselt University Library, Belgium, and the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) programme of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) to develop a global Open Science Directory. The Open Science Directory was originally developed by EBSCO and Hasselt University Library based upon a request by marine information management experts collaborating within the framework of the IOC's IODE programme. The Open Science Directory utilises EBSCO's A-to-Z locator product to provide access to useful scientific information needed in many of the world's developing nations. Available via the Internet for free, the directory provides developing regions a comprehensive search tool for all open access and special programme journal titles. Designed to enhance access to these collections by providing direct links to journals and articles in the EBSCO A-to-Z title database, the Directory offers immediate access to nearly 13,000 scientific journal titles, with an objective of 20,000 titles midway through development. Among the main open access collections in the Open Science Directory are DOAJ, BioMed Central, HighWire Press and PubMed Central, and special programmes HINARI, AGORA and OARE. INASP-PERI and eJDS will be added in the near future.
Thomson Scientific adds Derwent World Patents Index and essential scientific literature to Thomson Innovation - 27 Feb 2008
Information solutions provider Thomson Scientific, part of Thomson Corporation, US, has announced the addition of Derwent World Patents Index (DWPISM) and essential scientific literature, including Web of Science and Inspec, to Thomson Innovation, its new intellectual property research and analysis solution. The addition of DWPI and scientific literature provides a unique combination of patent and non-patent resources to support more comprehensive prior art research. With the inclusion of DWPI, Thomson Scientific has significantly enhanced its English-language Asian patent coverage available through Thomson Innovation. In addition to English translations of Japanese full text patent data, Thomson Innovation now includes editorially enhanced English-language patent abstracts for China, coupled with additional Asian coverage. To complement the new patent data, a broad collection of scientific literature content also has been added to Thomson Innovation, providing a critical resource for prior art research. Scientific journals, conference papers and technical documentation often include information on inventions prior to a patent being published. A recent study conducted by 1790 Analytics for the National Institute of Standards and the United State Patent and Trademark Office study indicates that emerging technologies tend to reference scientific journals more often than the average patent, underscoring the value of scientific literature for prior art research. 1790 Analytics is an intellectual property firm that specialises in patent citation analysis.

Encyclopedia of Life releases first lot of open access content - 27 Feb 2008
The open access (OA) Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), which announced its launch in May 2007, recently released its first OA content. The first 30,000 pages of the online encyclopedia were unveiled at the Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) Conference in Monterey, California. Intended as a tool for scientists and policymakers and a resource for anyone interested in the living world, the EOL is being developed by a collaboration between scientists and the general public. By making it easy to compare and contrast information about life on earth, the compendium seeks to provide new insights into many of life's secrets. By aggregating for analysis information on earth's estimated 1.8 million known species, scientists say the EOL could help map vectors of human disease, reveal mysteries behind longevity, suggest substitute plant pollinators for a swelling list of places where honeybees no longer provide that service, and foster strategies to slow the spread of invasive species. The EOL is projected as a foundational resource for helping to conserve the species already known and to identify millions of additional species that have not yet been described or named. At its core is the knowledge about the world's species that has been discovered by scientists over the last 250 years. By putting this information all together in one place, EOL hopes to accelerate our understanding of the world's remaining biodiversity. In addition, the EOL will illuminate patterns in biodiversity, promising knowledge comparable in impact to that gained after the microscope's invention in the 1600s. The EOL 'macroscope' will have a catalytic effect on comparative biology, ecology and related fields. It will also be an online field guide, complete with links to DNA barcoding and other information of interest and use to everyone from professional scientists to birdwatchers and gardeners.

Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., US, has announced that it is renewing the commitment to neutralise the carbon impact of its worldwide operations that were formerly part of Blackwell Publishing, which Wiley acquired in February 2007. This renewal reinforces the company's leadership role in addressing climate change. Carbon neutrality involves taking inventory of an organisation's carbon dioxide emissions, and then implementing strategies to reduce and eliminate unavoidable emissions. Wiley-Blackwell has partnered with Carbonfund.org to purchase investments in a portfolio of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation projects.
