Elsevier enhances STM platform ScienceDirect with new features - 16 Apr 2008 STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced that new intuitive reference and navigational features have been added to its online STM platform, ScienceDirect. The new features, which were developed in cooperation with researchers, are seen to deliver clearer results with fewer clicks.
Additionally, researcher comments and ratings from 2collab, Elsevier's free web-based collaborative platform, will be integrated with the articles in ScienceDirect. With this upgrade researchers are projected to experience a boost in productivity and a faster and more seamless research process.
Researchers typically want to evaluate the relevance of an article without reading through it, and they do so by using the article abstract, figures/graphs and references. To speed up this process, ScienceDirect now offers preview tabs on the results page or table of contents page. These facilitate one-click access to components, without the page reloading, enabling a seamless and simple research process. An article toolbox also improves navigation by bringing together all of the article-related functionality including 'Cited By' and 'E-mail Article' into one easy-to-find location. The toolbox will save time and help customers easily find the tools they need.
Researchers can now view reference information when their cursor moves over a reference marker in the body of an article. The information shown includes links to the referenced articles (if available). Researchers will be able to view or download the referenced paper immediately if they wish. Previously, reference information was only available at the foot of the article page.

In the past month, it added over 2,200 new titles to its purchase offering from publishers such as Oxford University Press, The McGraw-Hill Companies, Blackwell Publishing and Taylor & Francis.
Starter Packs and Subject Guides are projected to offer sophisticated research utilities including multiple search options, personal bookshelves, highlighting, annotating and automatic citations. They also facilitate seamless integration with other ebrary databases and online resources in the library and on the web through ebrary InfoTools.

VISTA, IPG pilot scheme to enable publishers and distributors grow revenues - 16 Apr 2008 VISTA, a division of Publishing Technology plc, and the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG), which supports and connects independent information providers, have launched a pilot scheme to enable selected IPG members to explore the benefits and evaluate the revenue generation potential of digital publishing initiatives such as virtual catalogues and online book samples. The project covers a cross-section of IPG members, enabling VISTA and IPG to assess the different ways in which publishers, distributors and others in the supply chain can incorporate such technologies into their strategies, and the effectiveness of respective applications.
Participating members were randomly selected during the recent IPG conference in March. Three publishers - Cicerone Press, Galore Park, and How To Books - will trial catalogue digitisation, which will replicate their print editions with an easy-to-use online facsimile designed to increase visibility and facilitate browsing of the publishers' products. A further five IPG members - Anova Books, Brahma Kumaris, Eurospan Group, Ovolo Books and Yale University Press - were given the opportunity to select up to 10 books for 'view inside' book sampling, which digitises small excerpts and allows them to be embedded into online marketing materials. Potential customers are therefore better able to assess the book's content prior to making a purchase.
VISTA and IPG will report back on progress of the pilot throughout 2008, and will follow up with case studies to advise other publishers on successful techniques for incorporating technology into sales and marketing strategies.
