American Diabetes Association event knowledge in Ekatius to be delivered through HINARI - 14 May 2008

The American Diabetes Association (ADA), a nonprofit health organisation, and Conference Archives, Inc. (CAI), US, have announced that the World Health Organization's (WHO) HINARI Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) is now delivering the ADA's event knowledge to participating institutions via Ekatius, CAI's new online platform for meeting and conference abstracts, posters, and rich media presentations.

In partnership with commercial and not-for-profit publishers, HINARI provides free or very low cost online access to biomedical and health information to institutions in developing countries. The ADA's professional education activities and courses represent a new, rich media content addition to the collection of journals now available to health institutions in more than 100 countries through HINARI.

The ADA event knowledge in Ekatius to be delivered through HINARI will include abstracts, posters, and rich media presentations captured from the ADA's recent and forthcoming Annual Scientific Sessions, held annually in June, as well as ADA's Clinical and Research Symposia and ADA's Annual Advanced Postgraduate Courses. The Ekatius platform delivers advanced search functionalities that allow users to search for event knowledge - abstracts, posters, and presentations from a meeting - either within a specific event or across several events.

NRC-CISTI offers pay-per-article service for database - 14 May 2008

Canada-based National Research Council's Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI) has launched Discover, a suite of current and planned pay-per-article services. Discover is designed to allow any researcher to search a database of more than 20 million articles for free and pay by credit card to view and print those selected. No pre-registration, user name or password is required.

Each article costs C$12, plus publisher fees and applicable taxes. Users see the full and exact cost of items added to their shopping carts. Open access articles are available free of any charges. Articles from NRC-CISTI's electronic collection (indicated with a green mouse symbol) are available for viewing immediately. Articles in the print collection (indicated with a red flying envelope symbol) must first be scanned, and users receive a link by e-mail when the article is ready to be viewed and printed. Access to all articles is for one view, one print. Access begins when the link is opened and ends when the link is closed. Users may not save the document to their desktop.

NRC-CISTI is planning to launch a free Discover Alerts service later in the year. This service will allow users to register to receive electronic notification of new articles based on search criteria or journal title. The alerts will be delivered either via e-mail or RSS feeds.

Ex Libris releases Primo Version 2.0 - 14 May 2008

Library solutions provider Ex Libris Group has announced the general release of version 2.0 of the Company's Primo discovery and delivery solution. The result of close collaboration with the Primo customer community, version 2.0 offers enhanced searching capabilities, including the ability to search in very large collections; improved usability and accessibility of the user interface; and easier system configuration and customisation.

A range of European and Asian interface languages have been added to enhance the user experience for the growing number of Primo customers in Europe and Asia. Version 2.0 provides improved exact-title searching; additional linguistic algorithms and dictionaries; optimised ranking of grouped (FRBRized) records; the identification of frequently misspelled words; enhancements to the "did you mean" mechanism, which "learns" search phrases based on past user queries; and the presentation of results ordered by popularity. In addition, a choice of user interface layouts is also available. The addition of services such as the sending of item information to users by cell-phone text messages complements the discovery process and seeks to enhance user experience.

In adherence to the Ex Libris open platform strategy, Primo now includes an application programming interface (API) for 50 services. This API facilitates the customisation of Primo and enables customers to develop code extensions that can be shared with other members of the Primo community. A new component, Deep Search, enables Primo to leverage the search engines of other repositories and to display results retrieved from these repositories along with local results. Furthermore, the results obtained through the Deep Search component are ranked by relevance and displayed using faceted categorisation.

Peking University Press to publish Chinese edition of Low Power Methodology Manual - 14 May 2008

Peking University Press, the book translation and publishing arm of the Peking University (PKU), has announced that it will publish the Chinese language edition of the Low Power Methodology Manual (LPMM). The LPMM is the ARM- and Synopsys-authored practical guide to aggressive power management in System-on-Chip design. In addition, PKU will develop a low power design curriculum based on the LPMM and introduce it to universities across the nation.

The English language version of the LPMM, which was first published in August 2007, is seen to have quickly become a widely adopted methodology for low power design, with more than 8,000 readers. Combining extensive commercial experience, scientific understanding, silicon technology case studies and a pragmatic approach, the LPMM is projected to cover a broad range of low power topics. These include clock gating, multiple threshold voltage methods, multi-voltage design and architecture, power gating and dynamic voltage scaling, RTL and architectural considerations for SoCs as well as IP, plus considerations for physical IP.

The Chinese language edition of the manual is expected to be available for purchase from Peking University Press in July 2008. It will be introduced at the ongoing SpringTech Seminar series. In addition, all of the LPMM authors will assemble to deliver a full-day technical tutorial on low power techniques at the forthcoming Design Automation Conference in Anaheim, Calif. on June 13, 2008.
