Canada Managing Data for Science ICSTI 2009 conference - 29 May 2009

The International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) has announced that online registration for the Managing Data for Science ICSTI 2009 Conference will close on June 3, 2009, at 23:59 EST. Registration will however be available onsite. The ICSTI 2009 conference will be held from June 9-10, 2009, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. For registration and more information, visit www.icsti2009.org.

The conference will address how sharing research data is essential for effective collaboration and examine how researchers, librarians and publishers can work together to create structures for managing and communicating scientific data. Speakers include 14 data management experts from Europe, US and Canada. Conference attendees will be able to learn how digital libraries and e-publishers can accelerate scientific discovery; understand how your organisation can benefit from emerging eScience strategies; and network with sponsors and colleagues from research, government, publishing, information and library communities.

As Canada's national science library and leader in promoting and supporting national collaborative research data initiatives, NRC Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI) is organising the conference.

UK JISC announces Digital Content Conference - 29 May 2009

The UK's JISC has announced that researchers, librarians, publishers and policy makers will be gathering in Gloucestershire on June 30 and July 1 to discuss the issues they face in creating, delivering and sustaining digitised content.

As JISC's digitisation programme enters a new phase of enhancing previously unseen and difficult to access materials, experts from across libraries, museums and the private sector will look into future opportunities and challenges at the event. Over 17 collections are already available due to JISC funding, and another 25 projects are digitising new content for research and teaching to be made available from September 2009. This is seen to make now the ideal time to stage the conference.

The conference is looking to share the challenges facing education and information professionals in managing information on the Internet when the speed of technology is changing rapidly.

There are many issues surrounding digitisation and access of information through the web, whether that be representing fragile materials in digital form or the complexities of licence agreements, copyright and ownership of works. The conference will explore these topics and bring together experts from various spheres to share best practice.

UK NPG selects Confirmit platform for customer feedback - 29 May 2009

Scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG), UK, has chosen Confirmit Horizons, a multi-mode platform for customer/employee feedback and market research, as its end-to-end customer feedback solution.

Confirmit Horizons will enable NPG to survey its readers and deploy reader panels for its flagship weekly scientific journal, Nature, and for its scholarly website, www.nature.com. It will enable NPG to better understand what its readers and users most value and to use this feedback to enhance the structure and content of Nature and nature.com on an ongoing basis.

NPG's decision to invest in Confirmit was based on the need to simplify and automate its customer feedback programme. Confirmit Horizons will also enable the publisher to offer co-branded online surveys to its advertising customers, providing an alternative method of reaching NPG's highly sought -after niche readership.

US DeepDyve unveils free search tools for websites, bloggers - 29 May 2009

DeepDyve, a US-based provider of research engine for the deep web, has released a trio of free tools that allows websites to incorporate powerful search capabilities for a more compelling user experience. These tools complement the company's recently announced suite of publisher tools which utilise DeepDyve's search technology to make publisher content more findable from anywhere on the web.

DeepDyve's new tools enable websites and bloggers to quickly and easily display related articles and search results directly within their sites and blog posts. Visitors can now discover new, authoritative information seamlessly as they read and browse through websites that utilise DeepDyve's technology. These tools can be implemented by copying/pasting a few lines of code into the site, or by installing a WordPress plug-in.

The More Like This Content API tool automatically displays results from DeepDyve that are similar to the information displayed on the current page. It is designed for use by any website that would like to include a 'related articles' functionality, regardless of whether their content has been indexed by DeepDyve. A Content Highlight Widget enables websites to integrate search with their users' normal reading and browsing behaviour. DeepDyve's WordPress plug-in allows bloggers using this platform to automatically include links to 'related articles' directly in their blogs. The plug-in utilises DeepDyve's 'More Like This' technology to use the text of the blog as a query and return relevant search results.

As users have become more accustomed to searching for information online, it is now becoming clear that search behaviour is evolving. A recent Hitwise report found that queries of eight words or more had grown from less than 1 percent of queries in 2004, to nearly 4 percent of queries by February 2009. This increase suggests that users are not only growing more proficient in their use of search, but they are forced to write longer queries to find what they want, given the volume of data that is returned. In April 2009, DeepDyve unveiled a suite of tools designed specifically for the publishing community. The products are designed to first make the publisher's content more discoverable in search engines. From there, other tools are available to increase the engagement at the publisher's site by allowing users to quickly find related articles based on what they are viewing.

DeepDyve is demonstrating its publisher tools and free widgets at booth #230 at the ongoing Society for Scholarly Publishing Annual Meeting in Baltimore.

HighWire Press, a division of the Stanford University Libraries, has announced a marked increase in the growth of its books programme. Over 30 new titles have been launched online so far this year and hundreds more are scheduled through 2009 and early 2010.

For many years, HighWire has developed and hosted non-journal content, such as books, reference works, databases, continuing education and conference proceedings sites. According to the company, the quantity of books and reference works going live or planning to launch with HighWire has increased in recent years as publishers are seeking greater integration between journals and other online content. Recent book and reference work sites launched on HighWire include Oxford Medical Handbooks, published by Oxford University Press; Handbook of Practice Management, published by The Royal Society of Medicine Press; CSH Symposia on Quantitative Biology, published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press; The Lyell Collection, Special Publications, published by the Geological Society of London; and The Carlyle Letters Online, an historical correspondence site, published by Duke University Press.

It also hosts cross-content products for niche markets that combine content from many different sources.

In addition to a rich feature set, HighWire's long-standing focus on discoverability and flexible content display options has served the new book and reference work sites well. Work with the library community is seen to ensure that this content fits well into library information systems and catalogues to make it easy for patrons to find and use the resources.
