UK BMJ Group ties up with Mobile IQ to provide point-of-care medical information - 23 Jun 2009

Healthcare publisher The BMJ Group, UK, recently announced the launch of a service that allows health professionals across the world to get on-the-spot access to expert opinion, guidelines and the latest clinical evidence on their mobile phone. This service is being made available at no extra cost to all subscribers of Best Practice, a new online decision support tool. Best Practice is designed to help practitioners, medical students and researchers find and effectively use appropriate medical information. Built specifically for point-of-care use, it seeks to help meet the real, diverse and evolving information challenges that health professionals face every day, whether in the surgery, hospital or out in the community.

This facility has been made possible through a joint agreement with Mobile IQ for the latter's mobile publishing platform, Fabric. The agreement allows access to any content contained in Best Practice on any mobile device, and the information is fully searchable to ensure easy navigation of the material. Fabric also supports links between mobile devices and e-mails to enable physicians who find an interesting article whilst on the phone can e-mail it to themselves and read it later at their desk.

Best Practice covers 10,000 diagnoses and all content is written and peer reviewed by specialists. It provides prescribing information, guideline summaries and expert opinion together with advice on symptom evaluation, test ordering and treatment strategies.

Best Practice Mobile is available on mobile phone at http://bp.bmjgroup.mobi or online at http://bestpractice.bmj.com/best-practice/marketing/best-practice-mobile.html

US Thomson Reuters announces plans to unify dual listed company structure - 23 Jun 2009

Thomson Reuters, a leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, has announced plans to unify its dual listed company (DLC) structure. Under the initiative, the company plans to withdraw shares from the London Stock Exchange.

The Thomson Reuters Board of Directors has unanimously determined that unifying the company's capital structure is in the best interests of all shareholders, as it will consolidate and improve the trading of the company's shares and simplify its capital structure. The proposed unification requires the approval of shareholders of both Thomson Reuters Corporation and Thomson Reuters PLC, voting separately, as well as the UK court approval. The Board recommends that all shareholders vote in favour of unification at shareholder meetings scheduled for August 7, 2009.

If unification is approved, Thomson Reuters will remain listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange and will no longer be listed on the London Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.

Chief Executive Thomas Glocer has played down concerns that Thomson Reuters could lose any UK-based shareholders through the action. Further, he noted that only 5 percent of all shareholders are in the UK, and expressed hope that those shareholders would retain their holdings after the delisting.

Netherland Class action evidence shows Elsevier staff consulted with Merck on Vioxx content - 23 Jun 2009

Staff at STM publisher Elsevier reportedly e-mailed pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck, asking it to select the content it wanted published about its anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx in the Elsevier journal Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine. This has been revealed by documents tendered to a US Federal Court for a class action suit.

Elsevier has also reportedly admitted that the journal is a 'single sponsored publication' where most of the content is selected by Merck with some input from Elsevier. The publisher has expressed embarrassment over its role and admitted to not meeting disclosure norms.

According to media reports, the petitioner in the class action has called the journal a fake, and a marketing exercise designed to promote Vioxx. It has also been told at the court that Merck included names of certain arthritis experts on the editorial board of the journal without giving them prior information or asking them for their consent.

Lead plaintiff Graeme Peterson, on behalf of several other Australians, is suing Merck and its Australian subsidiary Merck, Sharp & Dohme for compensation. He alleges that the company covered up the increased risk of cardiovascular problems associated with the drug much before it withdrew it in September 2004. Merck, however, claims that there is no definitive scientific proof Vioxx caused heart attacks and that it had acted responsibly.

E-mail communications between Merck's Australian marketing staff and 'account managers' from Elsevier Australia and Excerpta Medica Communications, a subsidiary of Elsevier, have allegedly revealed how they colluded over content in the journal.

The correspondence also details the response to complaints by angry medical experts whose names were listed on the journal's editorial board without their knowledge or consent.

UK BMC series accepting case reports again - 23 Jun 2009

Open access publisher BioMed Central, UK, has announced that medical journals in the BMC series have started considering case reports again. The move follows the recent departure of the Journal of Medical Case Reports from BioMed Central's portfolio.

BMC Gastroenterology has published the first case report since this policy came to effect. The article, 'The clinicopathologic observation, c-KIT gene mutation and clonal status of gastrointestinal stromal tumor in the sacrum,' by Li Gong and colleagues describes the clinicopathological characterisation of a primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the sacrum.

Case reports allow the rapid and concise reporting of previously unknown treatment side effects, novel therapeutic approaches, unusual clinical associations and diagnostic dilemmas. They can make a significant contribution to the literature, particularly for medical specialties such as surgery or emergency medicine, where the development of clinical trials can be ethically or methodologically challenging.

The medical journals in the BMC series consider reports of unusual or exceptional cases that advance clinical knowledge.
