Elsevier releases Alternative Energy Research Leadership study results - 29 Jun 2009
STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced results of its SciVal Spotlight Alternative Energy Research Leadership study. Analysing the work of 3,000 research institutions from across the globe, the study identifies the top 25, using a new method for determining leadership. Highlights of the findings were shared in a recent webcast, 'Research Leadership Redefined… Measuring Performance in a Multidisciplinary Landscape.' Over 1000 academic and government executives, researchers and librarians joined live or viewed the recorded version to learn more about the methodology behind the study which illustrates a new way to identify research leaders based on output in 'distinctive competencies'. Distinctive competencies (DCs) represent expertise in specific research areas. They reveal the degree to which institutions have constructed multidisciplinary networks within their organisation focused on achieving specific breakthroughs. Indicating that research within the university is not being done in isolated silos, examining output in distinctive competencies offers a more accurate way of determining leadership in a given area than traditional measurement methods. The SciVal Spotlight Alternative Energy Research Leadership study analyses the alternative energy work of 3,000 research institutions (primary universities) using SciVal Spotlight, Elsevier's new research performance measurement tool which is scheduled for release later this summer. Moving beyond the traditional method of measuring research output by journal count, the SciVal Spotlight tool is built on a more detailed model of the current structure of science. The model, covering almost all of the science being conducted across the globe, was developed using co-citation analysis of a comprehensive database including 5.6 million separate papers published between 2003 and 2007 and another 2 million of the heavily cited reference works within these papers. Based on the top 50 institutions globally, the study also analyses country output in the three main alternative energy sub-topics or topic groups including solar/photovoltaic, fuel cells and environmentally-related areas (such as efficiency, renewable energy, biomass, wind, etc.). The site is coordinated by Alma Swan of Key Perspectives Ltd., UK, and Leslie Chan, University of Toronto Scarborough, Canada, and overseen by a steering committee and advisory board of international OA experts and advocates. It highlights developments and initiatives from around the world, with links to diverse additional resources and case studies. Materials are presented according to specific focus areas, to reflect diverse interest in wider access to research. OASIS is targeted at researchers, librarians, publishers, administrators, the public and students. Topics for administrators include the Institutional Advantages of Open Access; Business Aspects of Institutional Open Access Repositories; Institutional Repositories for Research Management and Assessment; Developing an Institutional Open Access Policy; and the Optimal Open Access Policy for Institutions. Topics for researchers include the Benefits of Open Access for Research Dissemination; Open Access-What is it and why should we have it?; Citation Impact; Managing your Research Profile; Ways to Provide Open Access to your Work; Author's Rights and Author Addenda; and Publisher Permissions and Embargoes. OASIS is projected as a community-building as much as a resource-building exercise. Users are encouraged to share and download the resources provided, and to modify and customise them for local use. OASIS and the Open Access Directory are central components in the programme for Open Access Week (October 19-23, 2009). The event will feature educational tools that local hosts can use to design events that suit local audiences and time zones. Sample programme tracks drawn from OASIS, which highlight 'Author's rights and author addenda - For researchers' and 'Institutional Advantages from Open Access - For administrators,' have been released for participants to use to design their plans for the week. The organisers of Open Access Week invite feedback on the sample tracks as well as contributions to OASIS and the Open Access Directory. Additional sample tracks will be developed with advice from registered Open Access Week participants. Search for more such STM tools/services/products in K-Store Discuss this NEWS

New ebrary product combines pre-packaged e-books with hosting services for libraries - 29 Jun 2009
Digital content products and technologies provider ebrary, US, has announced the availability of Content Hosting Plus, a new product that combines pre-packaged, full-text e-books in academic subject areas with ebrary's hosting services. Available in multiple languages, the product transforms PDF files into highly interactive databases with the technology for information discovery including InfoTools. With this launch, it is expected that libraries that need to host and distribute their own digitised content can realise an instant return on their investment (RoI). The content may range from special collections and theses to dissertations, reports and any materials in PDF. It has been observed that in most cases the inclusive e-books from leading publishers, which contain hundreds of titles each, are valued at more than the cost of ebrary's hosting services. Content Hosting Plus is projected to allow libraries to easily and efficiently create digital repositories and enhance them with relevant content provided by ebrary. For instance, a library that has digitised a local history collection and would like to make documents more discoverable and usable can use the ebrary product and include a vast collection of US history titles and maps. Additional features and benefits include pre-packaged e-books containing hundreds of titles in US history, business and other academic subject areas; no requirement for additional staff; capability to process thousands of documents a day; seamless integration with content acquired from ebrary; built-in DRM; easy PDF submission; simple meta-tagging; InfoTools software for integration with other resources; 24/7 access from any computer; comprehensive statistics to quantify user behaviour; and choice of ebrary readers.
